So ive recently delved into the world of free to play mmos. the concept of "free to play" has a lot of appeal to me as it does, im sure, to many other people.

lets face it, times are tough, money is tight and i want a game that i can play for free, but here's the kicker, I DONT WANT IT TO SUCK A MAJOR BAG OF DICKS. also, ideally i would like to find a game that is completely free. most "free to play" games are only free for the first part of the game and then tack on the fees if you want to advance. however, i understand that people have to make money so its ok if a game has like premium packages or whatever for people who really want to kick ass but i at least want to be able to finish the main story without paying.

so far ive tried.

Vindictus - pretty fun but repetition in gameplay gets old after about level 20 for me

LOTR Online - meh

Champions Online - awesome character creation but gameplay is mostly grinding.

Wizard 101 - a whole lot of fun. aimed at the younger crowd but that didnt stop me from having a good time. hidden fees made me have to stop playing after about level 12. lame sauce.

Perfect World - couldn't get into it. gave up before the tutorial was over.

So, what are some free to play mmos that you peeps are into?

hopefully this thread will point me to that hidden internet gem that i have been searching for.

any genre is ok. doesnt even have to be an rpg.

EDIT

side note: i am playing on a laptop with no mouse. i know , i know, this seriously reduces the amount of games i am able to play well. so recommendations with mouseless controls are appreciated.

SECOND EDIT

a game that caught my eye is ACE Online. anyone play this?

Seeing as my computer has UBER low specs (You REALLY don't want to know. It would make your eyes bleed out of your head.), I can't really reccommend any particular one. However, I think you may take interest in a site I usually look up.

Has tabs for each genre so you can choose what you want.

You can have a lot of fun with Runescape if you allow it to be fun. It was the first MMO I played back in Junior High and is still running to this day. There is a lot of criticisms regarding how grindy it is, but there's a lot of content to explore, if memory serves me correctly. If one ignores the majority of the fanbase, the game is a lot of fun.

Give it a try, the game itself can be ran in your browser, and it has a very large number of players.

I quite enjoyed the zany humour of DragonFable and AdventureQuest in my younger days, and I hear they've just brought out a MMORPG, might be worth a look...

You could try Shin Megami Tensei Imagine, I was into it for awhile but I don't stick with MMO's very long.

GUILD WARS! Guild Wars,Guild Wars,Guild Wars,Guild Wars! Non-grind gameplay and the sequel is coming late Q4 or early Q1 2012. Might as well get on board and taste AWESOME!

Hm. Well, in that case, I have no idea. I can't exactly run any of these games they have nowadays as my PC only has 248MB of RAM and an UBER old card (An Intel Chipset) that isn't even supported anymore.

As Z said up there, maybe you could try Runescape. I remember that game taking at least 3 years of my life. The free to play part has quite a bit of stuff to do to keep you preoccupied for a long time. Downside is that it can feel a bit grindy at times, but it's worth it.

I'm currently playing this free browser-based superhero RPG with Text and it doesn't have anything to do with vampires

Guild Wars is always a good one. You pay for the game but its still free to play.
Popular ones are Conquer Online, Maple Story, Gunbound, Gunz, Flyff.

Turbine's MMO's are great.

DDO- If you want to play in a world where 3rd party is essential and you need players which are willing to wait for classes to do their jobs. The costs are small, usually you can pick up the expansions for about 4 months fees. Watch for the offers.

Now LOTRO is a different kettle of fish.

As a lifetime member in Europe,I have VIP status, and with a machine that can run this easily in DX11 it is great.

Yes, may seem MEH at starter levels but end content in LOTRO is huge and with the new free expansion (well for me) it gets better.

LOTRO reduced the difficulty of instances early on to make it more accessable to new players.

Eastern MMO's become grindfests or honeytraps,Turbine does not do this.

My 3 cents as I live in the UK :)

Mabinogi is always worth a shot, it's by the same people as vindictus but in a different style of gameplay. I lost track of how many hours I sunk into that game, the only reason I don't play anymore is because I lost my account password and can't remember the email I assigned to the account.

Try Regnum Online. It was a tad buggy last time I played it, but if you're looking for a non-anime free mmorpg, based around PvP (in the later levels), I'd recommend it. It looks like they've updated it quite a bit.

I've only played it a bit though, and never got to the PvP, but I enjoyed the questing, and only stopped playing because some bugs annoyed me (couldn't finish one quest, and my dwarf's beard kept changing to a gray color... I think that should be fixed by now. :p).

http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/

It's free, so it won't hurt to try it out.

Battlestar Galactica online...it fun and free.
I will never forget the great human raid of a few months ago. Me and a group of 20 other lvl 20s crushed every cylon outpost and conquered the map. I was only a level 3 but i was able to shoot down alot of missiles to guard our large ships. We got attacked by around 30 cylon players of high levels (big ass ships). One fired a space nuke and took out one of our guys so wee all piled on him and destroyed them all. And after we had half of the game world under human control we called it a day. Created a massive dent in the cylon army......it was a good day.
