I'll have to agree with bob (not going to quote, two posts are enough!); Turbine does free pretty well. LotRO is probably the best free-with-micros MMO I've played. The world is huge, especially if you can grab the expansions on sale, and the game really captures a lot of the lore very well.

As for DDO, if you're a fan of 3rd ed D&D you might enjoy it, but getting into it now may be rough, as everyone seems to want to just speed-run dungeons, complain about someone's 'concept' character not being completely min/maxed, and generally be as unfriendly as possible to newcomers with questions. I enjoyed it because I don't care about any of those things and had a group of dedicated groupmates, but YYMV.

As for Champions Online, I've got a lifetime, so I'm not sure how the free-to-play is, but as you yourself mentioned, costume creator is phenomenal and I still do events (<--badge whore), but it seems to be spinning its wheels lately.

Try Regnum Online. It was a tad buggy last time I played it, but if you're looking for a non-anime free mmorpg, based around PvP (in the later levels), I'd recommend it. It looks like they've updated it quite a bit.

I've only played it a bit though, and never got to the PvP, but I enjoyed the questing, and only stopped playing because some bugs annoyed me (couldn't finish one quest, and my dwarf's beard kept changing to a gray color... I think that should be fixed by now. :p).

It's free, so it won't hurt to try it out.
Thanks. looks pretty good. anybody else have a good experience with this game?

let me save you some time by saying don't play guild wars. start up cost is like US$50 and it is going obsolete w/ GW2. Also was one of less fav mmo's.
if you have soo much spare time that you need a free mmo i did enjoy perfect world for some 50lvls b4 i realized it was a giant waste of time/had no time to play it.
i know you said the tutorial put you to sleep but not too bad, very wow like
No Maple Story!!!!

Mabinogi is a fun diversion, but I don't think I've ever been made fun of anything more in my life than when my friends found me playing it. I told them I liked the music system (which is true), but honestly it was about my character making it through the Paladin/Anti-Paladin quests solo, which I still have yet to complete.

All-in-all, a much more in-depth game than the graphics and setting indicate.

Dungeons and Dragons Online- A very good game that lets you take direct control of you character (almost consil stlye). while u can pay money to get things quickly, most of what you pay for can be earned for free though gameplay.

Guild Wars- you have to pay for the disks but besides that it is pretty good. while its not a game you will want to play for 3 years, its good for a while. the game rewards players for being creative instead of getting matching gear set X after running the same raid 50 times.

Thanks, definitely dont have 50 bucks to drop on a game right now. my free time isn't abundant (two jobs/ community college/ 2 bands/ social life) but when i do have a moment id like to have a little world to escape to if only for a few hours.

Here's a couple good ones, but they'll only keep you occupied for a short time:

Fun little game though I never got into it much.

Urban Dead is great for keeping you busy for about 5-15 minutes each day :)

http://scrollwars.com/

Similar to Urban Dead. It's great for messing around and such, and you can usually do more stuff for longer periods of time.

As a laptop user myself, I can tell you that this game runs fine without a mouse, though a USB mouse for 10 bucks helps a bit.

Most of these are very simple games, but they are (for the most part) very fun simple games. :)

Best free to play MMO I've played so far is Dungeons and Dragons Online.
It's better than most pay to play games.

I recommend Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online. It's a game with lots of different things to do and stayed interesting to me for quite some time.

It is pretty fun. You get to befriend and fuse monsters to assist your character, shoring up your weaknesses as you focus on any combination of melee, ranged, or magic attacks. There's actually some story and some nice cut-scenes here or there. I would probably still be playing it now except that I played the beta to pretty much the end of the content they had available at the time, then lost interest about halfway through doing it all over again when it went live.

Well I played BattleForge for quite a while, it's and RTS MMO, of sorts:
- you essentially play through the campaign with other people
- then there are are pvp maps and random scenario maps
- with every completed map come new upgrades/upgrade points/gold
- once per day you get a card point and with it you can buy new units/buildings/spells
- you can also auction off/trade/buy units from other players
- you download and start playing the full game, only extra card points cost money so you never really have to spend anything

It kept my interest for a couple of months, it seems the Skinner box isn't as strong with this so you wont get a compulsive obsession trying to spend every waking moment on it.
