The only real issue I have with this is that downloadable content won't be "extra". Not financially to the producers of the game. It's going to be content that was planned to be included either in the original release version or in the extended downloads later. It's money making and that's all it is. If they are actually developing stuff after the fact based on how well they liked their game and wanting to add longevity to it, they generally begin work on an expansion pack, and even those are planned towards the end of the development cycle for the original.

I think if every game had freely-unlockable content (content that you could unlock as you wish, or chapters that you could proceed through as you see fit) then it would take all the novelty out of actually working through the game. Why work for something that you can already get?

Videogames are a different medium than movies or books. Not to say they aren't similar, but making exact similarities between them when they shouldn't be made isn't such a good idea. Movies and books are praised more for their narrative value, whereas games and rides are valued more for their interactive experience.
