Remember that Abandonware is free to download, so I'll just find a download of Dungeon Keeper 2 in a few. Here it is, my friends. [http://digiex.net/games-downloads/159-dungeon-keeper-2-full-version-1-7-a.html]
Does it work on XP?

The guys explains how you make it compatible with XP and Vista, so yes. But it has some graphic errors in Vista, like smothering the screen with black pixels.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ Dwarf Fortress is great, but you'll need to use the Dwarf Fortress wiki to start out. And remember, losing is fun.
How the hell could I know there was Wiki?!

There was a half life 2 mod called Dystopia [http://www.dystopia-game.com/] that I used to really love (nobody seems to play it anymore) . You need access to source SDK base to play it, if you can I recommend it.

I think if you are capable of getting past the first few screens in "I want to be the guy" then you deserve a medal. Great game though.
I beat the entire game except for the guy at the end who was just too hard.

Chalk. [http://www.konjak.org/chalk.htm] Until you've played this masterpiece by Joakim Sandberg, your life as a gamer is not complete.

Thanks Escapists.

I didn't know there were so many great games out there.

The best things in life are free, I guess.

Google, primarily.

And since I saw Mount & Blade up there, can I suggest another really fun shareware game? Escape Velocity: Nova. You buy that, you get access to the first two games, Polycon, and a ton of other really fun mods.

There's some absolutely amazing games you can find by following the links above. If you've only played commercial titles on current or previous generation hardware, you might find that some of the best games (ie not show pieces) are actually free.

Savage 2 just became freeware. Makes me pretty happy and sad at the same time. I want to play, but have finals at college so I must postpone my fun.
I know your pain. I'm supposed to be writing a 5 page essay right now.

SpiderWeb Software [http://www.spidweb.com/]'s Old School RPGs hold up surprisingly well.
This is actually what I was going to suggest, so I'll just go ahead and echo you. Spiderweb make old-school style RPGs, but what I enjoy most about them is how they take the traditional fantasy genre and twist it on its ear. Their settings are engrossing and original, and my only real complaint with the company is that they keep producing sequels instead of turning their potent brains to new ideas. Nevertheless, get Geneforge, it is awesome.

*checks*

Woah! o_O This is just as great as a shoe being thrown at Bush! Though kind of sad at the same time. That's a great game. :-/

I could name some indie games that were fun for awhile.

Aquaria (http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/)
A game I got last Christmas for me and my siblings and have no regrets on. I tend to avoid kiddie/girly games like this one, but it's just plain beautiful as a 2D game and has been a blast from start to finish. Think of it like a "Metroid" game in the water.

Hinterland (http://www.tiltedmill.com/hinterland/)
I just picked this up earlier this week and it's a great RTS/RPG game. Tycho said it pretty well on Penny-Arcade: "a RPG/City Construction game with all the dumb parts broken off."

I love this topic! I've always been a fan of these indie games and i think i may have found a few that i've missed thanks to you guys.

I also want to lend my support to spiderweb's shareware. I may have sunk more time into the exile series as a kid than any other game. Actually i lie, there is one.

Everyone who hasn't already needs to go play the escape velocity series on www.ambrosiasw.com *now*. If you have a mac, play the old ones. If you have a PC, the only one that has been ported is nova (but if you actually register nova, they have a mod of the old games too ^.^)

It's one of the best damn open world games around, and i say that without a hint of obsessive, crawling, shrill voiced fanboyness. Actually, no I don't.

There is a cool Arcade Racing game set with it's own nice track editor (the I suck too much at to even have custom music...), a nice paint editor for the formula 1 style cars, lots of pre made levels in singleplayer, and online play with custom tracks and such. It is Trackmania Nations forever.

http://www.trackmania.com/en/

The freeware game download is at the top. There is a better version with 6 more vehicle types and 6 more terrain and level types called Trackmania United forever you can get off steam, but it costs money. Basically, Nations is kinda like the best demo in the world.

You can get the "demo" off of steam too, but it bugs you about buying it.

Seiklus is the most awesome platform adventure game ever. No, really.

Battle for Wesnoth is quite fun as well; think of an expanded, turn-based Warcraft II with a focus on individual units. And while we're on the subject of TBS freeware, UFO: Alien Invasion is a detailed and high-quality game, and it's in 3D, which is a plus.

Lugaru is probably the best indie fighting game in terms of pure combat mechanics. That is, if you don't mind playing as an anthropomorphic ninja rabbit beating the bejeesus out of a whole lot of other rabbits. Usually it costs $20, but developer Wolfire is currently offering it free and it's completely worth it. The graphics aren't exactly top-notch but this is more than made up for by the sheer kickassery of the combat. (http://blog.wolfire.com/2008/12/get-a-free-copy-of-lugaru)
