I love freeware titles.

They're usually pretty cool, and sometimes better than commercial releases.

A couple favorites of mine are Barkley: Shut Up And Jam: Gaiden.

Imagine Final Fantasy VI with Charles Barkley.

Then there's Cave Story, but you probably already know about Cave Story.

So, what are your favorite Freeware titles?

Share with the class!

Trackmania Nations Forever is great (It's on Steam). Project Torque was pretty cool too before it shut down ;-;

EDIT: Also Super Crate Box is a great little game.

This is one of the things I don't understand about people who say that video games were better back in X generation. Even if you don't like all of the modern games being released, there's a plethora of games available for free on the internet. Many of them emulate those old games as they're easier to make, while others do incredibly creative things to explore concepts that can't be utilized effectively in mainstream releases. You didn't have anything like this back when we were stuck in the 16 bit era.

As for freeware games I love, the only answer for me is Dwarf Fortress, for reasons explained here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.245167-Lets-Play-Dwarf-Fortress-Feathered-Fiends]. I've sunk hundreds of hours into it and will continue to do so.

No I don't actually. I know some vague things about it, mainly that it's a 2D platformer, but I don't know why people praise it so much. Not saying it's bad, I haven't tried it myself. I'm just wondering what makes it stand out amongst all the other 2D platformers on the internet.

It's actually a 2D Metroidvania game, so there's more emphasis on collection rather than "OMG PLATFORMS." People praise it because it has a refreshing tale, quirky characters, and a charm that can only come from the Japanese. It also contains a really hard bonus dungeon called the Sacred Grounds, but no one calls it that; everyone just calls it Hell because it's hell to run. And because it's a pretty fun game, albeit a little on the short side.

Not to mention that it took Pixel five years to make it. And by "make it," I mean make everything: graphics, engine, music, music editor, story, everything.

Since the OP didn't link to it, here [http://www.cavestory.org/index.php] is the link to the game's front page.

I'm also going to link to Derek Yu's Spelunky [http://spelunkyworld.com], a 2D roguelike platformer that will beat you mercilessly.

I should start playing more of these things, actually...

I think it's because the 16-bit era has some of the most diverse games.

Just think Actraiser.
City builder and action platformer.

People want to emulate that kind of awesomeness any way they can.

Nostalgia, more then anything else. The less perfected nature of the graphics and the lower development cost also gave developers alot more freedom to play around, as with the legendary actraiser. To be fair, Actraisers city building was a bit underdeveloped, but did provide an interesting buffer between the action sequences.

It is extremely well done and fun, if anyone is into Mario style platformers they really need to check this out.

Well I know of a good free to play game, but it's not really freeware.
http://www.battleforge.com/
It's a strategy mmo of sorts, it's similar to Dawn of War games(squad based, capture strategic points for energy, upgrade units, going from mission to mission,...), but instead of you playing on your own you connect to a server with alot of other people.
- you have 1player missions (where you are on your own)
- and co-op missions (with 2, 4 or 12 players), people jump in your game and help you complete it and the loot is shared (you can also solo these, but you haveto be damn good to complete all objectives)
- then there is random PVE missions for battle points(that can be used to buy upgrades)
- and ofcourse PVP matches, you can do random sparring or fight for pvp leader boards(where you also gain battle points)
And you gain XP, gold, and all sorts of battle points, you can buy new units, buildings or spells, you can also trade and sell them to other players, there is even an auction "house".
All this is completely free to play, no time or game limits, you download and play the full game with everyone who is already there, only if you want the easy way towards power you can drop some cash and buy battle points.

Cave Story, VVVVVV and, if you have no value whatsoever to your life, sanity and time, I Wanna Be The Guy.

But the first to are simply incredible games.

That is true, although some people do enjoy that kind of game. I only ever play with a team of 4 friends and some alcohol, and to be honest I could enjoy Desert Bus with that combination.
