So, a friend of mine just put this up today. Other friends of his keep saying it's good. I'm not a big fan of rap, but I do like a few songs, and it seems to me that it's... Really bland. I do not get it. Lyrics are fine, and all, just... The delivery.

Any rap fans wanna tell me if this is good or not?

oh god thats awful. The beat was okay but the monotone rap ruins it. There is no passion in his voice, he sounds bored!

I don't like it, voice feels too mono-tone and not enough energy. Then again, I'm not a real fan of the genre as a whole. I prefer the Beastie Boys myself.

what this man said. I was actually expecting someone who could rap but screwed up the production. turns out the production is pretty good (for a rap song, anyway) and the rapping is... well it's pretty damn awful. it's like he doesn't know what he's doing at all...

It's alright except for the actual rapping. He just sounds so disinterested and bored with what he's doing, which kinda sucks because his voice seems like it'd be decent enough if done properly.

Vocals =/= music.

Like other people have said, he just sounds plain bored ... like he has been rapping the same song about 500 times to get it right but at the same time he just sounds bored of saying the same shit.

Same here dude. Same here.

OT Very boring. I'm not into rap but even I know there should be some kind of energy making it impressive.
He also keeps emphasizing his rhyming which is a bit weird and makes the song slower.

I'm a pretty major hip-hop head so i hope i can be of service.

I heard that instrumental before, it's by a youtube producer called TinoxBeats. I like it, a lot of emotion and energy in it.

The same can't be said of your friends rapping. No offense but i gotta say that this was pretty shite.

His lyricism is okay, he knows how to rhyme words. The rhyme patterns are pretty standard but he changes them a few times throughout the song, which is good to increase the variation. That was the nice part, but he lacks in three vital areas.

Delivery - This is the big one, seldom have i heard someone so disinterested in what they themselves are saying. Its a droning, monotonus blur of words that catches no interest from the listener. Also, he has to match his rapping to the right beat. I put the instrumental below, does that sound laid back to you? No it sounds really emotional, if you're gonna rap over that you'll have to be extremely passionate and intense or it will sound mismatched. You also have to think of the pitch, he was far below the instrumental. It didn't fit at alll.

Flow - It's sluggish and remains constant throughout the whole song. Generally that is not a good combination. Some rappers can pull off a sluggish flow by being really melodic and soulful. Consistency can be good if you are delivering a cohesive narratice. In this song the flow makes a boring delivery even more bland.

Content - He's trying to say something worthwhile, which is commendable. But he just doesnt manage to pull it off. He rabbles a lot of semi-philosophical statements but the message is unclear and the points doesn't go anywhere. Its also impossible to make an emotional connection due to the delivery and the metaphors are half-baked and doesn't really make sense.

To finally top it off, the chorus was impossible to tell apart from the normal rapping.

Rapping is hard, it takes years of practice to get even semi-good at it. I don't know how long he's been doing this, but if he wants to seriously pursue it he should invest in the book "How To Rap - The Art and Science of The Hip-Hop MC". It adresses pretty much everything you need to know about rapping.

Also, he should listen to a fuckton of rap. That way he will subconciously pick up how it should be done. He in particular should listen to some of the more animated rappers with strong flows and delivery. Tech N9ne, Ludacris and (i'm serious) Nicki Minaj all fall into this category.

Thats a good song. The one the OP linked? Painful at best. Shameful at worst.

It does seem a bit bland to me as well. The beat isn't that catchy or impressive from the start and the rapper sounded like he wasn't really invested in the song.

I'll begin by saying I'm not a fan of rap.

Perspective out of the way, whoever mentioned the monotone voice is right, the delivery is like a bored lecturer giving a talk to similarly bored students (i.e. it's just a voiceover with music, not rap). With the lyrics (which are pretty good), your friend could've added such a varied beat to the rap and the one thing you'll notice about rappers is their distinct and often overexaggerated diction (typically in the form of short vowels). He literally sounds deadpan here, and there's no impact besides the opening and there's a complete clash of tone and sound (as though the 'rap' doesn't really belong there).

You are not alone.

To OP: Yeah, the beat's alright, but jesus, it's like Ben Stein's trying to read lyrics.

Of course the guys friends are saying it's good. It's not very good, but it's better than what most people could come up with.
