I wasn't saying it's pointless to not buy Fritos/Pepsi because all this other stuff that's bad. I meant just not buying Fritos/Pepsi for a week (since most that actually do care about the issue will be forget about it in a week) isn't going to solve much even in this very specific issue. Instead of being outraged for a week over this thing or that thing, actually change your purchasing behavior across the board. If you're trying to eat healthier, don't give up pop for a week, but give it up for a lifetime.
In short, because the world is dominated in both formal and informal ways by a class of people who, in order to maintain their individual class status, compete with others of their class for ownership of the various things workers use to make most of the goods and services society needs and desires. In the course of that competition, cutting corners on the health, safety, and remuneration of workers often confers an advantage: more resources to be dedicated to useful things, like buying out a rival, bribing a politician, or buying something else for workers to use to grow one's fortune or, indeed, buying more work.
To an extent, they are simply acting out the hierarchical nature of their organisations. A company has owners; the job of executives is to run the company to the benefit of the owners, and the job of middle managers is to pass the will of the executives down the chute to the rest of the company. I say chute, because it's not a ladder, there's no power coming any other way. A typical company is basically an authoritarian dictatorship. The managers might receive "feedback" from the peons to send up, but this is only so owners can find ways to maximise returns. The whole system is geared to the will at the people at the top, and advancement within the company depends on pleasing the people above, not below.
However, given that the system will also self-select for people who deliver to the owners/executives rather than care about the underlings, one might argue that they really are the worst: because having that nature will incline them to make the sorts of callous decisions harmful to workers and beneficial for owner profits. And indeed, this might be why tests suggest top bosses in companies tend to score relatively high on narcissism and psychopathy traits compared to the general public.

Good. Now if only Frito Lays could talk a bit less bullshit considering this happened in the first place because of them.

Ethically produced X is always just a marketing scheme. The restaurant that doesn’t accept tips so you know their wait staff gets paid a “fair wage” still employs everyone on limited enough part time schedules and separately incorporates every one of their restaurants to make sure nobody gets health insurance. Sure, there’s no harm in changing your personal purchasing behavior, but you aren’t in isolation going the achieve any change, and both as an individual and as a collective effort you’ll only be able to identify a handful of bad actors to pressure and cannot ensure your alternatives aren’t similarly terrible.
