I was debating getting FTL: Faster than Light on Steam, but I'm not sure if it is worth the price or not, since I'm also waiting on Dust: An Elysian Tail to come out on Steam, as well.

I'd say yes, although, I don't really know your tastes. I find it to be an amazingly fun game - really nice. The £7 (or 10$) price tag fits, I'd even be willing to spend more myself, as the game is certainly worth more.

Now, if you don't know the game is a roguelike...erm, -like. You get a ship, crew and get to explore the universe. Well, not exactly "explore" as you have a mission and you need to keep moving towards your objective but you could still fly around. The travel is rather simplistic - you just move from node to node on the map and each node has an encounter - maybe you fight a ship or maybe you find stuff or maybe something else. Sometimes you even get quests (which aren't complex at all, for the most part) or get to resolve a situation, e.g., there is a fire on a space station - do you send your crew to put it out (risking losing a crew member) or not. The universe is randomly generated each time, so you get different things each time. And if you die- you die, that's why it's roguelike...of sorts - you do have a ship and multiple crew members.

It can be soul-crushingly nasty, in manner akin to Roguelikes. (not sure if it counts as a Roguelike; it's kind of odd due to the element of the Rebel Fleet pursuing you)

But yes, it's fun.

FTL is one of my fave indie games well worth the RRP, that said I did lose interest once I'd learnt how the game "ticked" and used all the tricks in the book to make the game easier.

The randomness kind of gets on my nerves because I don't know if I've really gotten better at the game or just had luck. If you don't think losing is fun, it's an exercise in frustration.

Fun while it lasted though, if you're into roguelikes or indies games, I'd recommend it.

Yeah, it depends on what you like and all.

If you want a game that'll raise your spirits up high and then crush your soul into dust within five minutes, FTL is a pretty good fit. Because you will die. There is no doubt.

It's not very long, it's got practically zero story, and the amount of randomness behind the encounters just goes to show that for every ounce of slack the game is willing to give, it hates you all the more. But it can be fairly compelling, and there isn't really anything quite like it on the market right now.

It's a fun game. It feels a bit like one of those online flash games, but one you'd bookmark. It's worth the money.

Get the DRM free version on GOG.

What price are we talking? You kind of forgot to say.

It's really good, probably worth your standard Indie game price (whatever that is.) I assume it's nowhere near your standard £29.99/£39.99 AAA game price range.

It captures the feeling of being this badass Star Trek-esque starship captain perfectly. I've found myself talking orders at my screen sometimes :3

"Open the rear airlocks! We'll flush these bastards out of our ship!"

"Ensign! Keep those shields up dammit! We can't take much more of this!"

The soundtrack is amazing I have to mention.

The game will hate you sometimes. You'll have all the swag in the world on your ship then BOOM it gives you this ship, this fucking ship that seems custom designed to exploit any weaknesses you have with better shields than you and probably a full 4 gun arsenal and drones.

I STILL have never beaten the final boss though. I get closer every time but it manages to one up me every time

You get more than 5-ish crew members and they sort of just... Stand there. You can only improve the Cockpit, Shields, Weapons and Engines by having a guy working on it in the room. Anyone else is on standby for repairs and I station any Mantis' next to airlocks to counter boarding parties. It would be nice to have a doctor in Medical at least.

Alternatively, you could get it straight from the developer's site, and get both the DRM free version and the Steam version. I wish I had known about that when I bought it, they were even matching the sale price Steam had it on, so there was no reason not to get it there.

And OP, it's a great game, as long as you're not the type of gamer who can't stand to lose at a game. Because you will lose, a lot. In fact, victory is less in beating the final boss, and more in getting that much further than you did the last time before your crew inevitably suffers some horrible death.

Steam shows that I've been playing it for 83 hours. That doesn't include playing it offline on my laptop. I still haven't unlocked all the ships and layouts and I still want to keep playing.

If you don't have a problem with dying a lot and randomness, you should give this game a try.

As people have said, Huge amount of luck in it, Sometimes it just destroys you and you can do nothing about it.

I really enjoy it. I'm not usually a strategy game fan, if that says anything. I love the art style, the soundtrack, and the simple-yet-complex gameplay. And naming my characters.

Have you ever eanted to be a starship captain? If yes then yes buy the damn thing.

FYI
-you will die
-you will get repeat or similar runs
-you will see luck in the game

Now buy the game, raise sheilds, and charge weapons that mantis ship looks hostile.

ive played dust and ftl and gotta say ftl way better. anyways worth the purchase regardless, one of the best games of 2012, and the chance adds so much dynamism to the gameplay.
