FTL is a blast so long as you both enjoy a challenge, and are willing to calmly accept defeat. When you play FTL, you will die A LOT! But in the end, it works in the games favor, providing both challenge and a mood of both exploration and inevitability. Definitely worth a buy.

I was in much the same boat (ship?) at the OP when I finally decided to throw down my money, but ultimately I'm very happy with my decision.

The only real complaint I have with the game is that, frankly, luck is more of a factor in success during the later stages of the game then well informed and decisive action. Losing because the game decided you weren't going to win this run can be aggravating, especially once you reach the later parts of the game. It's true to the Rogue-like formula, but it's tough to swallow when you're defeated a few times in a row simply because the game decided to throw too many battles at you in a row with no HOPE of recovery.

...not sure if it counts as a Roguelike; it's kind of odd due to the element of the Rebel Fleet pursuing you...
Just wanted to clarify that this is merely in keeping with the "Food" resource present in most older-style Rogue-likes. It limits your available actions to force you to leave things behind before moving on. It's one of those features that not everyone agrees on, unlike perma-death.

Quite worth it for $10. I'll admit, I got bored with it after a couple of weeks, but while it was fresh, I definitly got my moneys worth out of it. To me anyway, it seemed to be one of those games better played on occasion rather than in one go. Because as good as it is, it can run out of entertaining encounters quite quickly if you insist on hammering away at it.

Yeah, I'd recommend it.

It's not for everybody I guess, but at the price it's at least worth a look.

Just remember to upgrade blast doors and shields. Also, boarding is kinda OP.

I completed it in one runthrough, so I'm not sure. Not too fond of it either, but I think if you enjoy that kind of thing it's probably quite fun. The content wears thin, in one runthrough I'm pretty sure encounters were repeating, and there weren't a whole lot of upgrades available, but maybe that's just bad luck.

I've probably finished FTL about 50 times now, which should speak for itself. I love that cute, little indie game. It's short enough that you can play through it in 90 minutes, yet challenging enough that you need smart resource management and combat tactics to get through the game.

So, yes, for the price I can hardly think of a better game.
Also, the soundtrack is goddamn great.

ive been enjoying it alot. but it does have a large random element. the details like being able to put out fires or suffocat invaders by opening airlocks is a good touch
Sometimes if I'm down to my pilot, I like to open out everything except the front cabin. Someone has boarded your ship! There's no air on your ship! It's great fun, until someone disables door control so you can't remotely close them when something inevitably goes wrong.

OT: I think FTL is definitely worth the $10 I paid for it. I'm not usually one for the frustratingly lethal, but a handful of games in (probably lasting about 10 mins total) I found myself quite enjoying the stripping away of plot armour in favour of brutal space exploration where everything wants to eat you or blow you up. At the end of the day it's fun to name the crew after people you don't like and have the game engineer situations for their demise. Or for that matter, it works just as well with people you do like.

Deffo. It was one of my favourite games last year.

It's easy to get the hang of but also really challenging too:)

Bought it on sale, and even though I'm not really "into" the game so much, I feel it was definitely worth getting. It's good because you can play it during those times you have a few minutes to kill. I mainly play it while wasting time before leaving for work in the morning. Can't always be in the mood for PopCap games...

I suppose that's one way of looking at it. Though food normally wasn't limited by location, but circumstance.

I think it's well worth the money, I bought it last weekend and have been playing it all last week and this weekend. If you buy it from Steam, spend the extra money on the soundtrack, it's a thing of beauty.
