Brotherhood starts by recapping episodes of the original, but no where near as well. The original stage-setting episode with Ed and Al fighting the false priest in Lior is poorly done in Brotherhood with no where near as much impact and emotion as the original. Seriously, any retreading that happens in Brotherhood can't compare to the original series.

That, however, doesn't last long. Once it goes into it's own story, anything that you know from the original series is out the window. It's completely different. What you thought you knew about alchemy has no meaning. What you thought you knew about homunculi has no meaning. Everything is completely different. And it's definitely worth every episode.

Alright thanks! If the dialouge is totally different or even most different then I'll be fine watching it again. Guess I have to give it a shot now! First the movie though....
Conqueror of Shambala? Eh, didn't care much for that one, it's a little different than most anime movies in that it actually continued the story from where the anime ended, but it just wasn't very interesting. A lot of it makes no sense either with the characterization, Mustang's big new development early on in the movie kind of came out of nowhere, nothing in the anime indicated he was going to end up like that.
Yeah but it supposedly wraps up the story so I kind of need to watch it just because. Even if it doesn't fully do that I still want to watch it due to the continuation. The end of the show just left me wanting more.
It doesn't wrap up the story mate. It just swaps one swapping one cliff hanger for another.
Finally someone who wasn't really satisfied with the movie

It really felt like nothing really changed and went back to square one

I mean the gate to the alchemy world was still open by the alternate worlds' side and it looked like it could have continued on

A lot of people enjoyed it, I did too but the ending left a bad taste in my mouth.

It just made everything feel like there was no resolve

Pretty much this. However my only complaint with Brotherhood is that Hughes had no screen time, so his part in the original was much more effective because he had much more characterisation. Whereas in Brotherhood he could have pretty much been any random person.

Everything else in Brotherhood was better though.
I dunno, I never really felt Hughes was all that important as a character, his true relevance was that he was Mustang's best friend, and how his death impacted Mustang. I feel that Brotherhood established both of those quite well. Hughes did get a lot more screentime in the original, but most of it was interaction with Ed and Al rather than with Mustang. Ed and Al were obviously very upset at his loss in both animes, but it was never a driving force for them. In fact, in the original they didn't even find out he died until the last 10 or so episodes of the series.
Im not saying he was particularly important, plotwise Brotherhood did fine without him but im in FMA he was his own character and when he died it really meant something. In Brotherhood any random nobody could have died and it would have carried almost the same weight. (With the audience i mean, not with Mustang or Ed/Al)
