Fun Hard - Geometry Wars, it starts easy but gets progressively harder. Doom on Nightmare, it bridges on stupid hard but if you speed run you can do it.

Stupid Hard - Final Fantasy X-2 in chapter 5. If you haven't been grinding and been an obsessive completionist for the first four chapters, you're screwed.

Call of Duty games on veteran are both fun and stupd. Stupid because I die a lot, but fun because I feel bloody superhuman when I beat the game!!

Thing is 5 levels higher than you. Where does 'I should be able to kill the thing' come into play? Where does this concept or idea enter in? Is it because you want to do so, and you're replacing your desire to do a thing with the ability to do a thing? Because the two are not the same thing.

You're playing a game based on the internal concept that 'Experience Levels are meaningful' and that is the core game mechanic that makes every other game mechanic in the game function. Arbitrary is 'Certain monsters of my level are immune to my stuff just because, so I need to find a friend to defeat them'. This is a core mechanic, there is NOTHING arbitrary about the idea that one must progress in order to defeat higher challenges in a game centered around progression.

Fighting Sephiroth in KH2 (on any difficulty, though normal is best) is really fun, and quite hard.
As for 'stupid' hard, I'd have to say... Final Fantasy 12. A lot that game is just pointless challenge (Yiazmat, anyone?), especially near the beginning. I blame gambits.

The Dark Cloud games implemented this quite well, actually, in my opinion.
See, that is one of the places I draw experience from. It may work out to be some redeeming quality in some eyes, it may be hated in others. I'm going to justify my views here; say you find this really amazing weapon, that pretty much one-hits everything, or close to it. So you're blasting through dungeons, not paying any mind, when out of the blue, your weapon breaks in half. Completely breaks the flow. I don't care that it's realistic, I play games to escape realism!

I'm confused. Which particular water room are you talking about? What happens in it?
The one right after the first garrador. You have to defend ashley for forever, turn a crank to drop some stairs, piggyback ashley up on a ledge where you can't follow, and then defend her again while she turns two more cranks. There are just a lot of monk guys with scythes and shields and all kinds of shit and it makes that room so, so annoying.

Fun Hard: The Silent Hill 1 puzzles, the first time through. Especially the one in the school. They're still fun after that, but you understand them after the first time so it's not hard anymore.

Stupid Hard: I Wanna Be The Guy, The Movie, The Game. I couldn't even make myself get through that second screen with the apple trees. Of course I kind of suck at platforming, but still.

Fun Hard; Devil May Cry 3 on Dante-Must-Die mode. Sure, some people say it should be stupid hard, but I don't agree. There's always a way to get around a sticky situation and when you find it you can breeze through. If you've unlocked the top difficulty you can breeze through minions anyway, it's just figuring out boss tactics that gets increasingly difficult.

Stupid Hard; Through The Fire And Flames on Guitar Hero Expert level. The only song I can't 100% as of yet because it tries to make you play three guitar lines at once... And this is Dragonforce we're talking about people. Not even Ryu Hyabusa on speed is fast enough... ;)

Fun Hard: Most of the missions in Armored Core: For Answer on Hard mode

Stupid Hard: (All from The Force Unleashed) Kazdan Paratus on Sith Master, Multiple Purge Troopers at once on Sith Master, the first room of the last level on Sith Master, and the fight with the shadow guard and 5 imperial senate guards in the laser convergeance chamber on Sith master, made even more frustrating by the fact that when you die you have to get up to them again past 2 AT-STs, purge troopers and Jetpack troopers. No, seriously, have any of you played that god damn game on Sith Master? It is complete bullsh*t. Anyway, add to that the rest of the missions from AC: For Answer on Hard mode, especially the alternate ending one where you have to fight I believe 5 or 6 NEXTs with only one teammate who can't stay alive and do damage for more than 30 seconds.

Turned into a bit of a rant, but oh well.
