EDIT: just remembered. Single most hilarious instance of hate mail / chat.

Wow that must have cut deep. How are you not an emotional wreck.
OT: The only real online hate mail I've had was after quitting a game of Halo 3 Team Slayer in which I was the lowest rank by about 3 or 4 ranks. While I know rank doesn't directly affect combat prowess, it certainly meant that I was outclassed. About 10 minutes in I had maybe 2 or 3 kills with around 10 deaths. I was not a happy camper as I was just spawning and dying in a constant loop. Because of this, I quit the game in search of greener pastures.
All was fine until about a half hour later when I got a message from some random gamertag I didn't recognise. I opened it to see what it was about to find a message to the effect of: "You ragequitting *****, why did you quit you made us lose, blah, blah, blah" (I can't remember the exact message as it was about 4 years ago). This absolutely perplexed me as I naiively thought that a low ranking player leaving a non-objective-based game with an appalling K/D ratio would at least not matter in the slightly. I was wrong. Apparently this was an act of similar repugnance to screaming down the mic like a twat, making racial slurs about someone's mother while playing shit music in the background. I sent him a message back explaining that I wasn't exactly having the time of my life getting my ass handed to me on a silver platter by people who completely outclassed me and that we would have lost quicker had I stayed in the game as I was essentially score-cow for the other team going to the slaughter if I so much set foot outside the building. This apparently didn't suffice as he sent me back another message saying how I should have stayed in anyway for the sake of something. I told him to calm down and that it was just a game and he should let it go, a statement he quickly turned into something about how I shouldn't have quit anyway, after which I gave up trying to get this guy to piss off and just deleted the message.
Other than that, I haven't received any hate mail other than the usual unintelligible garbage and vitriol that spews forth from Xbox Live for just about everything, from sucking to being accused hacking the game for being a jammy bastard to having the sheer audacity to be alive YOU CRETIN! (Of course I would be exceedingly surprised if anyone on Xbox Live even knew what half those words meant let alone how to spell and use them). Overall, I keep my mic off or stay in a party and congratulate people who are genuinely good at the game, although I don't think I've ever done that outside of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 as that game is not terribly easy online.
