Futurama, new tone?

I don't know if my sence of humor is gone on holiday and didn't leave a note of absence to me these last few years, or there is something drastically changing in the way some things like this are preseved as being funny these days. I don't know, but this show used to make me laugh when I was younger, but now I think it's just as stale and predictable as can be.

Yeah.... Something hasn't felt right. It feels like they're going for the cheap laugh, which I LOVE, (For example, from my favorite episode, I give you Citizen Snips:

), but the new season isn't as... hilarious

Eh, overall, I don't think the show is quite as funny. I haven't been keeping up with the new episodes very well because I just don't care all that much. I agree that some of the episodes have felt a little preachier than previous seasons. Sometimes limitations and constraints can actually make something better, maybe we're seeing that now with Futurama. With fewer restrictions, maybe the writers are getting too cocky and overstepping that comedic gold zone Futurama usually stays in.

Although the ep where Bender caught a virus was great.

I don't mind politics or controversial issues in TV shows, but what I would like to see is the whole thing done with more subtlety and finesse. The older episodes seemed to be more like this, but a lot of the new ones so far have just sort of sent out an obvious, narrow message, instead of an intelligent one that can be interpreted in different ways. I mean, sure, I agree with what they are saying most of the time, but it still bothers me when the message is so singular, it doesn't make you think. I especially don't like it when it uses the same recycled arguments and turns them into jokes, or bases an entire episode on them, it's like they using the show just for the purpose of expressing their political views.

I'd agree that the new episodes do not fit with the old Futurama that i came to love, the new episodes almost seem way to over exaggerated in every charterer's personality, Fry is overly dumb, the professor is overly smug, Bender is about the only 1 that fits but that because you can't over do being a dick. (i love bender by the way) Do i like the new Futurama? its not my favorite, but its ok.

I think it's gonna take till the next season to start being more like the futurama we remember, theres only another 3 or 4 episodes left this season though so i say just stick with it for now and complain about it if the next season is as prechy as this one.

Some of the first episodes weren't quite as funny, I think in part because it's been so long that the time off is just jarring and because it's almost unreal that it's back on. But the newer ones have been picking up, and last thursdays was hilarious (it's great when they involve weird math problems heh).

The first 3 episodes that came out didn't have this Futurama feel to it. They spent most of their time on earth which is boring. Also They haven't really delivered much at all lately which is something I wanna see come back.

There are though some episodes that I really liked and Bender had a good one when he dated Amy.

Just wish they would at least try to deliver something.

Ive been enjoying them and they are picking up though I dont think they are as good as the earlier episodes. Still enjoying them though.

The thing that bugs me about them is that they havent really done anything with Fry and Leelas relationship, for the first few episodes it felt like they were just back to being friends, but then obviosuly mention it quite heavily in a couple of episodes. Its as if they dont really know what to do with them seeing as they obviously put them together at the end of the last movie because they knew that was what people wanted and was a good way to end it.

It has changed a bit, its definitely noticeable. Its not bad, just different.

Still funny as always though, which is what matters.

Yes, has been a definite change in vibe, but I would actually argue that this change is quite good and makes the show even more funnier and cool.

But that's just me. I mean I missed this show so much that I thin I'd even accept shit-on-a-stick if it had Bender's face on it.

Haven't seen the new episodes yet. You gotta remember they only got 21 minutes (without commercials) to tell a story, if it seems they rushed something, they probably had it much differently before it got cut down.

This. I can't stand living in the UK sometimes. We either don't get amazing stuff or get it after waiting an age.

There is definitely a change, but it's also been what, 8 years since Futurama was originally on? Yeah, people/humor has evolved. There are a lot of issues that can be discussed/parodied nowadays that weren't such a big deal 8 years ago. You can only do so much making fun of the 90's/80's.

I also don't know how someone can say that The Simpsons is taking the Family Guy route, because to me it seems they're going the opposite way, going more family friendly, while Family Guy is just trying to be more ridiculous than ever.

I feel it's taken on more of the Southpark approach. It's still full of jokes, but it actually amounts to something at the end.
As opposed to the opposite were jokes are jokes at the end of the day. Something like Family Guy where each joke is set up somewhat arbitrarily and not meant to do anything more than entertain you.
Personally I like the former style better, so naturally I've enjoyed the new episodes. It's certainly something different though.

I loved the original, but when I saw the first 2 episodes of the new season, I only laughed a total of 2-4 times. The jokes like V-Giny just seemed way too stupid for Futurama, and I really think they just Family Guy'd it. I haven't watched any episode since, but some people says it gets okay around 7 or so, and that it fluctuates all season.

They never delivered anything to begin with! There wasn't that many episodes where they delivered something or that it was actually relevant. Being a delivery company was just the plot excuse the writers needed so the characters could have a spaceship and a reason to travel around the universe, whenever was needed. That and to make the "I'm a delivery boy!" joke. Now it's to late to change it.

It's the same reason why Homer Simpson is a security officer in a nuclear power plant. It was a joke when the show started, but now it has no relevance, though the writers haven't bothered to change it and sometimes it comes in handy.

Well the new season isn't up to par as the best of the old seasons. But thats understandable, with the old stuff they were starting out new and in sync. Now they've been on hiatus and have built up a very large fan base who all want good episodes. Re-birth was alright and then the next three kinda sucked (In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela, Attack of the Killer App, Proposition Infinity). Duh-Vinci code was good and had traces of the old Futurama random storylines and then Lethal Inspection and The Late Philip J. Fry brought it up to the top. The next three were alright but it's playing out just like the old seasons. For every Jurassic Bark episode we had a Three Hundred Big Boys episode. I'm sure the newer stuff will be equally as good as some of the older stuff
