Stole this from Retro Magazine here in the UK but what do you guys think will be future classics from the previous Gen of consoles or from games released on PC in the same time frame.

I noticed this month they listed Catlevania Lord of Shadows, can't say I agreed with it...maybe they are running out of ideas.

Personally I feel the Mario Galaxy games will hold up and still be perfectly playable in years to come.

Thoughts?

I know Retro picked a few, Bayonetta was one. I'm going to have to say Dark Souls personally, it's pretty much a given.

Dark Souls will definitely be one, agreed.

If it isn't considered one already I think Morrowind will be one, especially considering its role in evolving the concept of a modding community to what we have today. Its sequels played their parts as well, but Morrowind was the initial spark and continues to get new mods to this day. That said, Skyrim will certainly be considered a classic as well. I think the middle child will be forgotten in the end. Poor Oblivion :(

I'm trying to think of really stand out amazing games on the 360 PS3 era. Stuff so good it will stand the test of time and always be thought of as good. I find myself struggling.

Can we count World of Warcraft? I mean it came out in 2004, and is still going today. The history books will definitely have something to say about WoW.

Previous Gen? Mass Effect 3 maybe? Do the Amnesia games count? 'cause those two were fun...

Stanley Parable I guess.

Definitely Fallout 3 and New Vegas(the superior game)

OH! Toy Soldiers! Loved that game!

How can that game be called classic when it was mediocre cover based shooter disguised as RPG?
Same way Pokemon and OoT can be. Nostalgia, rose-tinted glasses and differences in opinion.

As much as I love Castlevania (III on NES is my fave, followed by the DS games, but I also really like Lament of Innocence on PS2), Lords of Shadow is not a "classic" now or anytime soon, enjoyable as it can be.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 on the other hand, definitely "classics". As is Dark Souls, no question (edit: love Demon's Souls, but Dark had the impact).

Civilization V? (although all of the Civs probably can be called "classics"). Mass Effect Trilogy probably will count.

Hard to pick as usually we are biased to games we like, but to be a "classic" usually means it has some timelessness to it, with features and gameplay that give people a reason to go back, even if the graphics eventually are dated. Style has a lot to do with it (Zelda: Wind Waker, for example). Hard to pick what will still be enticing 5 years from now, especially once you get past ones we all really agree on.

EDIT:
More "classic" contenders:
Batman: Arkham Asylum (or City, or both)
Borderlands 2

I also think games that are "classic" should be pretty exclusive, hence my list being so short.

How do people feel about the new Xcom games?

Do you think we will look back at Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within as classics in 10-15 years time?

but it was broken game. was not it?
in some aspects it is. pistols arent balanced they simply are overpowered, but even with issues like that the game is still beloved by many for having real choice in a rpg

AhhhHAHAHAHAA!

Whoo boy. Wonder what they were smoking.

These sort of threads often just amount to people saying that of course their personal favourites will totally be classics.

I shall try to avoid doing that.

This is likely true.

This is also true.

This is definitely true.

...

As for other ones.

Bioshock. The original at least. Maaaaaybe Infinite but I kinda doubt it.

Portal. Again, maybe the sequel too but most likely not.

Possibly one of the Batman Arkham games. Either Asylum or City. Obviously not the other two.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Fairly obvious.

The Last of Us? Maybe? Please? Just for me?

I'd like to be able to say the Mass Effect trilogy and Telltale's Walking Dead but that's blatant wishful thinking on my part.

Cult classic is a thing, but cult and classic are most definitely not the same thing.

Alpha Protocol was largely forgotten within a year of release, let alone remembered a decade later as a classic.

Classics will be games which will stand the test of time and have been genre-defining in some way. My favorite classics are Super Metroid and A Link to the Past only b/c they are as fun and playable now as they were over 20 years ago. The only modern classic I can really think of is Demon's Souls. I think this is really one game that will still be remembered 20 years from now.

Ehmmm...I don't really know. Anything really old is usually only appreciated by a select few. The difference is mostly esoteric.

In 20 years?

Dark Souls possibly.

Demons Souls, not a chance in hell.

Just b/c Dark Souls is more popular now doesn't mean it will stand the test of time just as good. Dark Souls is part of a series and has created a sub-genre of games that will most likely continue to improve so that doesn't make the original game as unique as Demon's Souls is. Demon's started the whole affaire and has laid the template for these games to grow and expand. Similarly RE4 laid the template for modern third person shooters which is what makes this game a genre-defining classic. Mario for platformers. Street Fighter 2 for fighting games and so forth. Dark Souls is not such a title.

While that's true, Dark Souls did popularize it in a way that Demon Souls could not. It was a trend setter.
