Oh hey, notice how there have been Dark Souls 2 and soon Dark Souls 3 but nary a sign of a Demon's Souls 2? I wonder why that is. I'm sure someone who understands business as well as you can take a guess.
Demon's Souls is Sony's IP so obviously Bamco couldn't trademark 'Demon's Souls 2'. The fact Bamco already published Demon's Souls in the EU is evidence they saw potential in the title and the 'Souls' in Dark Souls isn't there out of mere coincidence. Guess what it's for genius? That's right, brand recognition.

The PC port was an incompetently produced piece of shit. It was so slapdash that an amateur was able to came along and fix many of it's issues in 24 hours. One guy was able to do in one day what an entire studio of supposed professionals was somehow unable to do in months.
From Software aren't PC developers so they didn't really have the skill and knowledge to make a decent port(or have a third party like Sony or MS help them out). Like I already said I know Dark Souls is the more popular game but it isn't unique or genre-defining. If Dark Souls 3 is out next month or so and blows DkS1 out of the park no one is going to remember this game in 10 years time. Unlike Demon's Souls which laid the foundations for these games to exist in the first place. That is what defines a classic.

Sure. Demon's Souls wasn't the breakout hit that Dark Souls was but it had its fair share of fans. No reason not to get them on board the spiritual sequel with a bit of brand recognition.

You mean exactly what Dark Souls did to Demon's Souls?

Yeah, it's a possibility.

That's never going to happen. Bandai Namco's lesser Dark Souls 2 team is behind it. :p

...Well, a Classic is typically a work that had impact on the culture around it - so reviving a genre, establishing a genre, becoming a huge cultural phenomenon, being enormously popular far beyond the years it should be, so on so forth.

Shit like Doom, Pokemon, Mario, World of Warcraft, Starcraft, one of the Mobas (I'm not a Moba player so I have no clue which is the 'defining' one), possibly one of Biowares things (maybe Mass Effect? I hear more about that than I do any of their older stuff), the original Deus Ex, Metroid, Minecraft, Call of Duty 4 (maybe. At the very least the influence of CoD will be remembered)... there's quite a few, really.

...as big a fan as I am of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, it's a... pretty forgettable game in the grand scheme of things. Probably the most memorable thing from it in 20 years time will be when Scholars hold up Mankind Divided as the 'point where gamers called publishers on their shitty DLC practices'.

Mass Effect is a game I would consider to be a potential for a classic game in the future.

It was a game that tried something different, compared to the two sequels which went straight for the shooter money

I'm pretty sure Miyazaki is behind this one. The company got bought out, and now he's president of From Soft. He made it pretty clear that he would be personally involved in every game they make from now on. Besides, the new game has Miyazaki's signature style to it. That was noticeably lacking in Dark Souls 2. It didn't feel like a Miyazaki game.

So its essentially games who's other qualities can outlive their contemporary graphical limitations (that is to say, classic games look like ass after a decade or two, but are enjoyable enough for that not to matter).
I'm pretty sure it's more [game I personally like].

"Classic" is hard to predict anyway I suppose it's safest to go with your faves. After all, in 100 years, Twilight could be the best book series, Ride to Hell could be the ultimate video game, and Epic Movie could be the greatest comedy of a lifetime.
After a hundred years, another factor defining "classic" is whether it still exists in some available format. Whilst in theory Epic Movie could become the greatest comedy, what tends to happen is that shitty movies get left behind every time the next generation of media storage comes along. Half of all the films made before the 50s are permanently lost. People didn't have the foresight or fondness to find a proper way to preserve them. This is already becoming a problem with games, as the more obscure, less popular titles from a couple of decades ago are already getting lost.

Sort of, for about a year, but the guys who made Demon's Souls and the first Dark Souls just finished up The Old Hunters, so that only leaves the Dark Souls II team. Bandai Namco is probably going to milk this series as much as they can (with a comic already coming).

I'd call that partially true, but even a lot of popular films and music and television have been lost to time. I mean, do you really think Doby Gillis was more popular than Superman or Doctor Who? I bet you've had at least one moment of "how did [X] come out before [Y] on DVD?" in your life, too.

Bandai Namco isn't in charge anymore. From Soft was bought out by Kudokawa, which proceeded to promote Miyazaki to president, and give him more creative freedom. He stated that he will now be in charge of every game From Soft makes. Miyazaki confirmed that this will be the last Dark Souls game before they move onto other projects. He was unhappy with the last game, so he wants to clarify the themes of the series before bringing it to a close. He's also said that he isn't interested in large franchises, and that a series should be finished before it becomes over saturated. Evidently the next game he wants to make is either going to be sci-fi, or possibly a mech game.

Alright, that does sound good. I'd love to see him making a sci-fi game. I also remember reading about him wanting to do something like Ico, but anything is fine with me as long as he stops doing Dark Souls, at least for a while.

Games I'D consider classics or games I'd have to look at on terms of how good they were for everyone in general kinds of classics?
Because if it's just what I think as an individual:
The first [PROTOTYPE] game (Mercer is Bae, also shapeshifting, still never forgiving what [PROTOTYPE2] and its comics did to his character)
The first two inFAMOUS games (Cole is also Bae, also lightning>"lol i get all powers")
Sleeping Dogs (Wei is Bae, kung fu fighting>"KAAZEEN LETS GO BOWLING")
Alpha Protocol (Michael is also Bae, basically Mass Effect if it was The Bourne Conspiracy and Bourne/Shepard punched with the strength of a horse's kick)
Fallout series (War is Bae, the 60s style appeals to me a lot)
Elder Scrolls series (No one is Bae, I didn't have an amulet of Mara but I think even despite each of the games having their shortcomings, the entire series was quite a ride)
Mass Effect series (Shepard is Bae (both of them), I have mixed thoughts about Andromeda so I'm not including that)
Dragon Age: Origins (Though I loved a lot about the character interaction with two, a lot of the other aspects just won't hold up, but Hawke is still Bae)
Pillars of Eternity (Obsidian is Bae, I actually want to try more RPGs in this style because of this game)
LISA series (Depressing, Painful, Joyful, it's one big emotional roller coaster...what you thought there was anyone in this series that you would want to be anywhere near?)
Undertale (Sans is Bae, mercy never felt so good)
Witcher series (Geralt is Bae, a bit rough around the edges in each installment but its a fun Dark Fantasy regardless)
Metal Gear 4, 5 and Rising (FOX is Bae, yeah 4 could basically have been made a huge movie, yeah 5 could have a lot better of a plot twist at the end or in fact not had one at all, yeah Rising hammed it up sometimes but you know what? I loved all 3 of these games, plot and all)
JoJo's Bizzare Adventure: Eyes of Heaven (Don't care if it's a bit clunky, we can play as Speedwagon and now there's a new Dio, this game already wins, All of JoJo is Bae)
Souls Series + Bloodborne (Undead is Bae, atmospheric and challenging games even when they might have some small pet peeves that might put you off)

Games I'd think everyone would declare classic in general:
None, there's a type of game that everyone likes and your classic could just as easily be my next toilet paper substitute.

Also if you now have cancer because I used the word Bae.....good.

I define a classic as a game that not only was successful enough to warrant a large enough fanbase to talk about it years after it has come out, but also was innovative enough for other game companies to try to imitate certain respects of it in the future, if not the entire formula.

Dark Souls is the obvious first choice for this. Not only did we have Lords of the Fallen attempt to ape this style and fail miserably, but we have a slew of indie games coming out soon as homages to the game itself, if not the series.

I'm surprised that BioShock is not a more common answer, as while it did not invent the concept of (say it with me now) random documents and audio logs, it certainly popularized it enough for it to be THE way to tell story for atmospheric games.

From what I've been able to tell, Portal seems to be a classic, as it set the standard for first person puzzle games by popularizing the redirecting lasers puzzle and whatnot.
