My daughters first birthday is approaching, and the theme of her party is "future gamer". Unfortunately, I'm drawing a blank on ways to tie the theme together without spending a ton of money on licensed crap. Any gamers out there with ideas for games, food, decorations, funny puns?

For my sons first, we did Mario, with "grow up" and "get a life" cupcakes. But we don't want to reuse that. Though we may reuse the "Game Over" party favor bags. The guests will range from 1 to 8 years old.

We know we want to incorporate Samus and Tetra we like the idea of using strong female characters.... Her smash cake (cake that's all hers to smash) will be a Metroid morph ball.

This is a bit rambling. Sorry!

That's so cute! :3

Maybe you could use Portal?

Maybe make little portal cupcakes, with white icing and then alternate between orange and blue rings.

You could make little companion cubes?

I don't know, these ideas are shite, I just wanted to post to say how cute I thought the idea was.

Companion cube pinata. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/292734044500250501/
or a creeper http://chowvegan.com/2014/07/14/im-minecraft-y/
Yeah, you could do a portal cake. and cake is a lie invitations.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3ZZXblNAZc
Metriod cup cakes.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmVVucS5SWI

If you think the pinata is something you can pull off. Maybe you would be interested in Tetra party hats. Or at least one for your daughter with the rest being Samus blaster cannon party hats.

I can try to think of more if you ask.

It's her first birthday, she has never heard of any character.

ah. then lara croft and jade :p.and for me to learn how to read lol.

for op.i cant really think of good ways to incorporate those characters rather than having pictures of them all over the place. like not sure how well you can decorate and make stuff. you could make blood rayne cupcakes but those may be quite morbid for a childs party. megaman is always a good idea. or you could have now entering level 1 on the party banner. its hard to think up things for kids.

Would it be possible to know such a thing? It's been a while so I can't recall if my younger siblings had a gaming preference by their first birthday.

OT: What about incorporating something involving Minecraft? I don't play the game but the aesthetic seems like something that would appeal to a child her age.

Thanks everyone! I really like the portal cupcakes idea, and the level 1 banner idea.

Any games ideas? Most of the kids will be older, 4 or five-ish. Only thing I can think of is a chocobo race.

I haven't played zelda and metroid in a long time but maybe there are some minigames that you could put together that are drawn from these titles. Making your place into Hyrule (remember the power of the imagination) with different zones and a sort of scavenger hunt could be possible and fairly cheap & easy. It could be as easy as masking tape on the floor blocking out different areas. Heck, you could have the kids "design Hyrule" and make posters/decorations.

Call around just to see if any game shops have any posters or swag they'd be willing to donate. That stuff probably gets trashed or taken by employees but you never know, you do have a "future customer" there too.

You could do a fishing game with a dry "fishtank." Magnets as "hooks" attached to string on a stick. Put magnets on small containers (paper or cardboard) with treasure inside. Could have two kids fishing at the same time. The two fishing poles have opposite magnetic poles, the magnetic pole of the treasure boxes are varied, and its a timed competition/tournament. A lot of ways to do this but it could be a "level" in the scavenger hunt - one of the boxes could have a clue (maybe a box with a false-magnet on it, "last box standing"). Earn piece of the triforce?

Could do a shooting gallery too with foam darts.

Itdoesthatsometimes has good idea with the pinata but maybe a motherbrain design.

There has to be an easy variation of Pin the Tail on the Donkey but I'm drawing a blank.

I was thinking about costume jewelry (plastic) rupees but the choking hazard keeps me from suggesting hiding those.

Why not minecraft too? Cut a bunch of blocks from a 1x1 and paint them (time pending). Break up kids into groups and have design contest where they design and build some structure and then turn it into a tower defense game volleying a soft projectile back-and-forth with a simple catapult. Structures could be build to protect something balanced atop something else - a tennis ball on a roll of paper towels (might be too big).

The other idea that came to mind was a console pot luck but I'm not sure how feasible that is - do they all need an internet connection and can you support those devices running at the same time? I just don't know because, well... PC master race (joke)!

Cleanup game at the end earns XP boosters.

Morthbrain rice crispy treats. 3 Dyed rice crispy balls put together in the shape of mother brain.
I think that is a great idea.

Jello molds for game related items, like rupees.

Maybe you spend a load of money on licenced crap and then charge admission to guests? You could say you are collecting a Gamer Gate

No? Ok I guess I'm not going to win any pun of the year awards but do I at least get points for effort?

Both excellent ideas.

Companion cube cuboid cakes with white icing would be a hit.

Give everyone a little card badge with their name, level and xp meter on it?
Little stickers filling up that bar each time they win/place in a party game, with prizes when someone levels up?

Clean up game at the end could ensure everyone gets a chance to grind out that level and get a prize too.
