Future Street Fighters should follow Super Street Fighter 4's example when it comes to unlockables.

I think unlockables are a great idea. SSBB did it terribly what with having requirements like "Play for ten hours" or whatever inane shit. Most fighting games usually just have it wanting you to beat it with a character, beat it one a certain difficulty or beat it without getting killed or something. Not always but usually and since most story modes aren't long it's not like it's hard. Having EVERYTHING unlocked from the start just isn't much fun.
Actually, those are the Smash Brothers alternate unlocking methods, for people who don't want to beat Classic in under 12 minutes (Captain Falcon), complete all five levels of target test (Lucario), reflect ten projectiles (Ness), and the like.

In other words, "play 100 matches" is more for people who don't care about single player (including Subspace Emissary, which is how I unlocked everyone) or who can't complete the requirements. Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution has a similar system.
And beating the ENTIRE subspace emissary to unlock sonic is a bit rediculous. Beating classic or arcade isn't a problem, it's short and doable if you have a few minutes to spare. Subspace emissary takes forever and is boring as all hell. SSBB is just an example of terrible unlocking conditions I used. If you're going to lock characters don't make them completely retarded. But on a whole I like 'unlockable characters' as an idea because I like being rewarded like a retarded seal for pressing buttons.
If you don't want to play SSE to unlock Sonic, just beat Classic ten times. You're already getting a head start by unlocking Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Marth, and Luigi, and presumably you'd want to play through the game with more than one character.

Seriously, the only characters who require SSE are Jigglypuff and Toon Link, and for those, you have the alternate method (which you're already going to be using to unlock various stages, music, and Snake). I don't quite get what you're complaining about.
I was complaining about the SSE ways to unlock them, saying they were stupid. Yes there were better, alternative ways to unlock them. But I still said that the SSE thing was utterly stupid and annoying, as were some of the alternative methoods. Some of the ways were good, most of them were stupid as hell. I clearly pointed out that things like subspace emissary was a terrible way to make things unlockable, or in your fanboy rage did you not notice that?
In my fanboy rage, I noticed how strange it is to call a game's method of unlocking things "stupid" when the game clearly doesn't force you to use that method.

It's like complaining that a restaurant menu has a certain food that you hate, while ignoring the fact that there's more than one thing on the menu.

I can say that food is bad, I can point out that they're terrible at cooking it. I can eat other food. possibly even enjoy it, but it doesn't change the fact that they're shitty at cooking that specific meal. In this case I was pointing out that it was an example of bad cuisine, don't put bad food on your menu even if you have good food on there too.
Except you're not complaining about bad cuisine. You're complaining about cuisine that you simply don't like, and mixing those up makes you look like a tool.

Are you any more an authority then I am to say what's objectively good then I am? Otherwise anything I say is purely subjective, therefore opinion. When talking about food unless I am a food critic if I say it's bad that usually means I don't like it therefore it is bad. Same with games, if I don't like something I say so therefore to me it is bad. This is becoming far too off topic now, so let us put an end to this "discussion" sir fanboy.
Except that when you call it terrible design, you actually are making an objective statement, and are thus objectively wrong. Part of it is that you're complaining about an aspect of a game that doesn't really affect you in any negative way, something that the developers anticipated and simply made it one method, and one which can still be enjoyable to others.

More importantly, it makes perfect sense in its context. You're already playing through a story where, until the very end, only certain characters are playable at any given time. Much like an RPG, in fact, hence the "X has joined the party" system. Really, an actual bad design choice would be if you could play a character in the Subspace Emissary, and they weren't made available in the rest of the game.

In other words, while it's perfectly natural to expect complaints about SSE altogether (I have some myself, like the increased gravity), there's seriously no point in complaining about a secondary aspect of the system.

I fully agree with the OP here. Locking characters in fighting games is a rather asinine feature that really never should have been introduced. I've had had SFIV for quite some time now and I still can't unlock Gouken because the requirements to do so are bat shit insane.

http://faqs.ign.com/articles/957/957058p1.html
I was gonna list them here, but they are so freaking complex that providing a link to them was much easier.

Now I have managed to unlock everyone else, except Seth who can't be unlocked until you unlock Gouken. I suppose this wouldn't be much of a problem if you have a 99th degree black belt in SF, but for us normal people it's a bit of pain in the ass.
Little help for you maybe: Do it on the easiest difficulty, using a second controller to join in if the fight isn't going like you want. No first hit, no perfect's etc. Also, fairly easy to do on one round victories.

edit

Side note, the first several posts in this thread are people arguing about different games. In the world of acronyms (I hate them) SF4 is not the same as SSF4.
