Why are people treating a basic 'hey our thing is cool and you should use it' statement as if it was the holy grail of public relations? Did EA make rude gestures at Valve while waving a sex toy while I wasn't looking?

OH GOD WHYYYYYYYYY!?

OT: Gabe, I fucking love you man. More execs need to learn from you how to appeal to the competition when trying to strike a deal. Sadly, the gaming industry seems at eachothers' throats nowadays.

Yes I read it the same way.

Of course Valve want EA on steam, EA have some very big titles which can make Valve more cash.

OT: I haven't seen any reason to be hatin on Origin at the moment, games have downloaded quickly and function. Hell I even put in my code for BFBC2 on Origin and got the deluxe edition for free. I have a few games on there, and the layout is pretty cool with everything being easy to access.
Mostly people don't like where this is going, methinks. They don't want to have to download more clients to play games. That's one of the appeals of Steam, on top of sales and stuff.

I realize it's very complex but EA should do it because Steam already has infrastructure and base. EA should sit back relax and let people grab up their games. Sure they might pay a little toward Valve, but in the end EA can mellow out a little, make some nice scratch, and remind us why we loved 'em in the first place.

It has to be cheaper than trying to launch your own service.

Lordy there's a lot of steam fanboys buzzing around. Newell's admissions have nothing to do with being the more mature or even "classy" party, they have everything to do with EA being too big to bully into submission. If this was the way he truly felt there wouldn't have been a "spat" in the first place. Not that I don't enjoy some fantastic steam deals but let's stay objective here.

No doubt Valve would love for EA to return to the fold and then dismantle their every option for digital distribution independence. I have a hard time imagining EA is going to allow that to happen any time soon.

I would like to point out that Origin is not competition for Steam, not in the positive market force sense, anyway. It is EA trying to bust a perceived monopoly (really just an overly strong market share) with a real monopoly...yeah...

To be truly competitive, both Origin and Steam would need a wide selection of games, with lots of overlap. Then the deciding factor in what service to use would be value (determined by prices and features). Competition would come in the form of competing sales and steadily expanding feature lists as each service tries to one-up the other. What's actually going on, is that EA is keeping all their games on Origin in a bid to force you to use it, rather than proving it's value to the customer, creating a monopoly on EA games.

Next time somebody starts talking Steam up as a monopoly, and how it needs competition, make sure it's really competition that is being supported, and whether Steam is truly a monopoly.

I mostly don't like where the industry is headed with social clubs for everything. Want to play Blizard games? You better have an account. Want to play Ubisoft games? Account. Want to play Valve games? Account. Activision? You betcha. EA? You're darn tootin.

Every publisher is taking this route and I don't like it. I don't like needing to give out my info more than necessary. I don't like having a million directories for different save games and now installs. "My Documents" is already a mess. Why not just use the User/Saved Games directory or put the saved games in a sub where the game is installed. Now I have Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/MOMOMO and now for Origin I have Program Files (x86)/Origin and Program Files (x86)/Origin Games/MOMOMO. Argh~! Don't even get me started if I buy retail, and needing GFWL and Steam/Origin (Formerly EADM). It's about time to get out of gaming and find a new hobby I think or roll over and take it. I'm sure many will take the latter option.

*MOMOMO is generic game title.

Sounds like technical talk for; "Hey, we practically own the market in online distribution and laugh when EA comes back to steam fully willing to accept everything we demand of them. Sweeeeet.

Ps, we won't solve the issue why they left. We'll just rely on our almost-monopoly but play it up as being the "bigger man" to get some customer cred."

Actually, Gabe, you don't have to do a thing. When they see how far their sales drop, they'll come around.

So Valve when are you going to let me download my games?

Your servers suck and I hate you.
