Oh wait...
He is the one who claimed that putting more computers in schools would be the foundation for an "education revolution"...
Ahh, but I predict that the computers given out will be next to useless for any kind of current-gen gaming. They might be able to run something along the lines of Deus Ex or Starcraft. Might.

They can, and regularly do, run Counter Strike.

I know the Koreans are crazy about their video games but I didn't know the Auzies were in that big a predicament. It's most likely some overblown issue that's being turned into and issue during an election season.

However if they were playing football for 8 hours a day, it would be a healthy hobby and not an addiction...
Well ,if as someone stated earlier about australia now being more obese than the good ol US of A, is true i would say yea that is a much better option. I dont care how much the wii gets you to move it doesnt compare to getting outside for a bit.
It's fantastic that they are getting exercise. However, a mental addiction to anything, even if it is a sport, is unhealthy.

As the scourge of videogame addiction spreads, it could become as expensive and destructive as alcohol and nicotine addiction, according to an article in the Herald Sun [http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25500689-2862,00.html]
I would just like to point out for those who don't know that the Herald Sun is a tabloid Rupert Murdoch trash-rag, not a respectable newspaper. As with tabloids everywhere, it's populist and scandal-rich but journalism-poor, so it sells well but is not taken very seriously by policy makers. When you see an article like this in The Age or the Sydney Morning Herald, then we might be worried.

Yeah but didn't they have that other news story about the Australian gov using music to drive teenagers away from public places. So going outside is out of the picture.

Psychologists in Australia are warning about the imminent threat of text addiction among australians over the age of 8.

As the scourge of reading and edumaction spreads, it is estimated that the cost couldbecome as great to society as that of videogames, yet shockingly, the Australian Medical Association has no policy in place to address the problem.

Among the many culprits are publishers and newspapers, who are unsurprisingly willing to investigate the phenomenom of reading addiction.
Many medical experts have advocated the buring of text, to bring the availability of this dangerous passtime down to a manageable level.
Similar actions have been successfully implemented in the past, for example, by the Great Senator John McCarthy.
Furthermore, any reading devices, including so-called "spectacles" must be destroyed if this threat is to be nullified as the glorious Pol Pott showed us 30 years ago.

"There is no doubt education addiction is on the rise for adults," said psychologist William McBullshit. "It can be all consuming. I had one patient who was so involved with one newsrag called Herald Sun and would read it up to eight [or] ten hours a day."

Did I mention the wildlife in Australia is pretty frakking dangerous? Yeah, most of them can kill/paralyze you with ease, mostly because Mother Nature's a fickle *****. So Yeah.

I propose you send your policy makers out for a wilderness survival trip then.. cause at this rate I'm gonna start pitying Aussies rather than thinking they are politically incorrect violent awesome with legs, arms and a cool hat.

OH NO! Videogames are addictive! Someone call the press!

Really now. How much evidence is this? They're NOT an addiction, they're just something that's fun to do. Hence, people play them often.

I never understood this. Why is playing video games such a bad thing?

Don't get me wrong, you should still go outside and exercise. I do it just because I like to get fresh air. But what else are some people supposed to do?

We stopped being cool when the dingos ate our common sense and we got the remains through the dingo.

Also, on a more serious note, people play games for hours on end here mainly due to a misinformed society which shuns gamers, or at least I get shuned for being one :'(. So what do I do? Play more games out of societies way.

And do we all remember that Gaming Addiction Clinic in Amsterdam? The guy who opened the place found that it was an underlying social issue which forced gamers to find a creative outlet, not the fact the games themselves are addictive, like he origionally thought.

So, in summary, we down here are doomed until Gen Y takes over government, and by then we will start oppressing people for having technology implanted into their skin and virtual reality and such. Oh the cycle continues....

oh Peggle you and your addicting flashy colors and sounds

seriously though, Games are fun for a while. If you play say World of Warcraft(or any other big-budget MMO) or maybe Counter Strike:Source(or any multiplayer fps) and play said gamer more than 3 hours every day regardless, you have a probolem. If you find yourself playing EverQuest 2 for 15 hours every day you REALLY have a probolem. And you just have to slowly wean yourself off of your games. Its like quitting smoking, except without the withdrawal symptoms.

It's just like anything else, good in moderation, overdo it and you can cause yourself problems.

And "I had a patient who would play WoW 8-10 hours a day.." that guy was weak, that left him a whole 14 hours to sleep and eat and stuff...

ONE PATIENT = NATIONAL HEALTH CRISIS

Did Australia's math teacher get replaced with a half-eaten deck of cards or something?
