Potential addiction to anything is real... depends how obsessive compulsive you are.
But video games will get the most headline attention because of their growing popularity.
Rather than look at what the person is addicted to, they should be looking at the person and their behavioral habits, mental/emotional stability, & living environment.

Anything, with the right amount of effort and dedication, can become addictive.

Doesn't mean that everyone who plays a game, or watches pornography, or reads a book, or drinks alcohol becomes an addict.

Gaming addiction will never be the same as a physical addiction, such as drugs and cigarettes and alchohol. The reason is that the consuming of the drugs and such cause chemical imbalances, and withdrawal would insue because the chemicals have been used to the imbalance, making the withdrawal of the substances the new imbalance, and the negative effects painful

Gaming addictions stem more from the mind, the psychological aspect is where you get addicted, your mind thinking only of that game, and your need and want to play it grows until you can't stand it.

I can agree that there is an addiction to gaming, but to get that addicted that you're considered an addict would require daily play of at least 7 hours a day, and you wouldn't be considered an addict until it started taking place of other responisibilities, neglecting family/friends/loved ones, skipping work or school, or even forgetting to eat or not eating because you want to play more. It's not as easy to get addicted to games as it would be drugs or other substances, but it is possible, just difficult

According to News, Doctors, And even websites, Video games are as addictive as drugs.... What?

I'm not joking, this is insane.... My aunt hit it with me today at a so called family meal. I play games to much. was what she said I responded with "Yea but I'm not like your drug addicted daughter." well i didn't say that I said "I play them to get away from boredom after I get my homework done, Its not like I need them." the message was clear, I am not addicted. But my "Denying" the fact I have a problem led her into beliving I do. Soon the entire family went into full blown intervention mode..... I nearly walked out of the room twice.

So my question to you is, Have you heard of this Bull crap? If so are you addicted?

I know I'm not, Now if you don't mind, I need to go blow up Mister X on RE2
I haven't read all the other posts, and I'm sure this has already been said but:

Games ARE addictive, and claiming that there's no chemical dependence(I know you didn't just pointing out) is stupid, because there is ALWAYS a chemical component, Dopamine, adrenaline, Endorphins all of these things are naturally occurring "feel Good" chemicals that can easily lead to addiction, if you don't have an addictive personality then good for you, if only we were all so lucky.

Also belive that drugs are the onlly adictive things in life?
Ever seen a gambling addict?
I rest my case.

I'd say it's more like game abuse. There's nothing linking the person, they're just doing it out of desire, there's no real link.

Unless you grind up the disc and snort it.
Someone, somewhere, has prolly had the urge to snort a game if they could. Im going with Final fantasy 8 as the specific game :)

Dictionary definition of addiction: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.
I'd say this is not the case for most people who are active gamers, or whatever you want to call it.
I play games a lot, and I spend tons of time in front of the computer at home; but when I'm with my boyfriend, for example, I don't touch the computer and I don't feel any urge or complications from not being at the computer. And I have no problem with being away from the computer over extended periods of time - why am I even at the computer then?
Because there are TOOONS of stuff to do and I don't have much else to do, so why the fuck not? This is where I game, this is one of the places I socialize, one of the places I keep myself entertained, my working station(homework, art, writing...) and my no. 1 choice of boredom murderer.

EDIT: I drifted off there and went on about computers instead - to better summarize; I've played 207 hours of Dragon Age: Origins since I got it, but it's not because I always REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to play it. It's because it's fun. Like reading a good book, you want to keep reading, re-reading and just enjoying it for as long as you can.

No one would ever call someone book addicted. GTFO gamers. D:
