So I have a backlog of games for the several systems I own. I figure I'm hardly alone in this. Since I have them and there doesn't appear to be anything incredibly inspiring on the horizon, I've decided to not buy any games this year. No new, used, or downloads from Steam/GOG. I doubt I'll be able to finish the backlog in the limited time I set aside for games, but I think I can make a major dent in the the pile. I know that gaming tends to bring out the collector in people so I was wondering if anyone else has ever decided to do take the bull by the horns and finish what they started? Have you been successful?

I limited myself to $200 to spend on gaming last year due to a backlog of about 80 games. Then broke that rule and went over by about $100 so I wasn't THAT successful. However, I did get some stuff accomplished as I actually still didn't buy everything I wanted. I knocked out about 4 games. Haha, I have 2 more on the way. However, I found myself going back and playing the games I have always loved again as opposed to starting the new ones. Any game I have put more than 400 hours into, I sank about another 2-400 hours into it. I have a list of about 20 games that I love so much, I can never put them down. Not spending money on new games, was VERY refreshing but I found I spent a lot of my time playing those old gems for the most part.

My problem may be that I actually am not a completionist. I want so badly to have knocked out all the games on my backlog, but I don't think I care as much as I think I do. I want to have knocked them out, but I don't want to DO it. Because I could be playing Civ 4 or Xcom right now.

I have 553 games on my steam account (a result of my partaking in every steam sale and being part of Humble from its beginnings) and I don't dare say I've even tried more then a quarter, let alone finished them (though may which I like to waste time with don't really have any 'end' or 'completion' of which to speak). I will never manage to play all the games I have, and I just know I'll buy more to add to that pile. Honestly, for most of the games which I buy I know deep down I'll never play it, but I think it's the collector in me that tells the rational part of my brain to buy it anyway.

I have almost 250 steam games in my Steam library, probably at least half of which are backlogged. Though I did a decent enough job at trying to cut down on that backlog, not to mention finished some games I've been meaning to(ME3) for a long time.

I did a pretty good job of limiting myself to games on my wishlist, though a few games were so insanely cheap and interesting enough to grab them on impulse buys(X-COM:UFO DEFENSE for $2? I can't play my original game anyway, so why not?). Though some games aren't gonna be cheap enough. Saw FF XIII at one point for like $5. Thought, well, the price is right but that doesn't fix the 40 hours of clop-clop-clop-clop until the game gets remotely interesting. So, nope.

There's a few I'll buy to have digitally, like Grim Fandango and DoTT when they get rereleased this month, and as long as Gat out of Hell is good I'll grab that but there's not really any games that excite me coming up this year(maybe Broken Age IF it's finally released). So I'm likely not buying any games thus year.

Especially since this next year I've set some goals for myself, including actually finalizing my novel and submitting it for publishing, getting married, getting a new job, and learning a new language.

I didn't buy much this Christmas sale, shocking really. I bought Long Live the Queen for a friend as a joke (it's a legit good game though) and I bought Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall on a recommendation and that's about it? It's telling that the one thing I got really excited about was the Sunrider Academy demo being released for New Years. That's a free demo for a free game hyping me up more than anything else that year. 2014 in a nutshell. Shots fired.

I finished most of the games I bought this year, aside from FF13 but i'll finish that at some point in 2015. My anime backlog is way worse. I didn't buy much this year anyway, I have a few Visual Novels to finish but that's it. They tend to be on the long side though and i'm stuck in Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius. The fuck is this side mission. Easy escort mission turns into an entire enemy fleet sent at you including carriers backed up by Sunrider clones, battleships, cruisers and every type of Ryder. The fuck? Even the main character calls bullshit by the time the carriers show up. I don't remember this being in the first playthrough...

As usual, my backlog is so fucking large. I would need to quit my job, have no social obligations, and spent the next five years to beat all of my backlog. RPGs that average about ten hours a piece, Visual Novels at about thirty to fifty hours a piece, Strategy games that you can't even guess, and multiple shooters ranging from five to twenty. I currently have twenty games for my consoles I need to beat, mostly in the form of JRPGs. For PC I have a insane amount of one hundred and forty games. That isn't including the seven or so visual novels I need to beat.

Very simple, just don't buy trash you don't really want to play whatever its price.
I have a backlog myself with many 50+ hour games (JRPGs) so it takes me quite a while to chew through it... but I'll do it. Those that have 100+ indie games in their backlog aren't getting through that no way. There are more important games they'll want to finish and they'll no doubt have added another 100 to the pile by the years end.

Mostly no since some of them I have no longer got a copy of (I trade in LoZ Spirit Track despite I never finish it).

Sure I got a few "to do list" but I pretty sure I won't complete.

Now I said "mostly" since at the moment I do got a bunch of unfinish games that I do intend to played and finish like Freedom Planet, Skullgirls and Professor Layton and the Miricle Mask.

Well, with some of the answers in this thread I feel better about having 86 games on steam.

My backlog isn't actually that large, it's under 10 not counting games I didn't finish because they are boring (like dead island and divinity 2). It's just many of my games are quite long especially since I'm a completionist. I'm probably not going to buy any more games till at-least mid way through this year though. I have a number of games I only have because I got them in pack (cheaper to buy the pack that the games I wanted) but have no intention of ever playing.

If completing my backlogs includes taking over the whole continent in mount and blade I don't' think I'm going to ever do that.

250 games? 553 games? What is wrong with you people? Don't your brains just...I don't know, explode at some point? I have a backlog of maybe ten games and it's driving me nuts. Let's see...

Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and thus the other two games with it.

The original Kingdom Hearts collection, although I did finish Final Mix there and one of them is just a movie.

Tales of Symphonia remake, and it's sequel.

Final Fantasy X and X-2 remakes.

Should probably finish up Burial at Sea Episode II for BioShock Infinite.

Trying to play Borderlands: Pre-sequel, but that's a little hard because I only play with two friends and it's difficult to find a time when all three of us can commit.

I recently bought a PS4, along with Lords of the Fallen, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor, Alien: Isolation, and Destiny. Now, I don't consider any of those games backlogged yet because I have been playing them. So, my total is...eight games and a piece of DLC. And it's killing me. I don't know how you guys don't go insane having that many. Granted, I'm a console gamer so I don't do Steam, but seriously...hundreds of games? I just can't wrap my head around that.

Now if we get into completions and platinum trophies, it's a bigger list, but I do agree that it seems like nothing really exciting is coming out this year yet. The only three games I have on my radar are Bloodborne, the remake of Dark Souls II, and Batman Arkham Knight.

I have 65 games for which I don't have a single achievement (many of which I have never booted up) and another 87 that I have less than 100GS in, out of a total of 353 games.

Looking at some of the responses here I feel a bit like a 20 stone man pointing at a 25 stone man and saying "Look, I don't have a problem."

As for how to handle it, I am instituting a New Years Resolution that says I'm not buying a next gen console until I've got an average of 400GS over all games and at least played everything in my collection. At my current rate of scoring it should take me just under two years. That should encourage me to think if I really do want to spend up to 10 hours playing that 2.99 game that looks so tempting in the sale.

Too many PS2 titles to count.

And by that I mean NOT hundreds of them. Jesus, people.

As for PS3 games, I'm missing two-thirds of the Ezio Trilogy, two-thirds of the Ratchet & Clank Collection, the first couple of Uncharted games, inFAMOUS 2, Dragon's Crown, Ni no Kuni and Xmas present L.A. Noire. Also the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection, though I played the games originally on the PS2. I left off Demon's Souls and Red Dead Redemption halfway through, and I'm currently playing Dead Island and Borderlands 2 (both on co-op, so it takes extra time) and Far Cry 3 (solo).

That's why I try not to think about it much, but it's been difficult not to grab something for 5 or 10 dollars on a steam sale because it sounds good.

And since I'm lucky to play games 2 hours a day(4 hours if it's a weekend), I buy them faster then I finish them. It's going a little faster since I finished school but I still have a job and social obligations and all that.

To make matters worse, I got a PS3 last year so I could play the PS games I heard were awesome and will likely NEVER get ported to PC, but I still haven't touched the Silent Hill games I got(1-3), or God of War 2-3 and now I have Red Dead Redemption to play that I got for christmas.

On the bright side, I don't really care about almost all of the games from 2014 so that's helped me not buy new games. I kinda hope 2015 continues the suck trend so I'm not tempted to buy anything new.

At least I can be confident that Ubisoft is not going to tempt me for the near future, seeing as if it doesn't involve Italians or pirates there's no point in bothering with their games anymore.

its good to admit you have a problem. that 10 game backlog can easily be increased you just need to set your mind on it

I have... possibly 30 Xbox 360 games that I haven't played yet, if we include all the Games With Gold freebies and digital download sale games. Some genuine classics in there like the Bioshock trilogy, Lost Planet trilogy, GTA IV and Red Dead... ah well, one day!

I've been a little better recently about clearing my backlog in preference to buying new games. For example, I finally finished Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, and have Revelations lined up next. Mind you, like a mug I couldn't resist buying Dead Island Riptide in the sales and have now committed myself to a 20+ hour glitchy grindfest to get 100% completion on that. How did this game ever get past the playtesters? In what dream world is it worthy of being a retail game, rather than DLC or at best a digital-only release? It's honestly the most underwhelming retail game I've played in years.

I just recently bought a Wii-U and I've got The Wonderful 101 lying on the back burner -- Super Mario 3D World is just too much fun!

Other than that, I still plan on getting Alien: Isolation and Shadow of Mordor once they're at a nice discount.

And I also still need to crack open that Spyro trilogy I downloaded.

Right now I'm playing through Saints Row IV, then the first Uncharted game, followed by Dynasty Warriors 8 and after that who knows? With luck in 2016 at the tail end of the 2015 steam sale I'll feel caught up enough to download Spear Of Destiny, Strife, Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth, and a few other archaic but fun first person shooters!

i'm doing it right now, i kinda split the games up into different categories so i'll always have something to play when i'm in the mood.

currently i kinda have my main games of WoW, Wolfenstein:NO and this war of mine, and then i have smaller titles like OlliOlli, octodad, AoE2 HD, Joe Danger 2, and the binding of isaac to clear through (although TBoI is an ongoing thing, probably until forever...). The big games i have to get through are the Bioshock Infinite DLC, Enslaved, Hitman Absolution, Prototype 2, Resi4, Sniper elite 2 and Styx MoS. Eventually when my interest in WoW starts to lull i'll reinstall DA:I and get into that properly, I'm just giving it time so they'll hopefully fix the cutscene framerate issues, that pisses me off far too much.
