Game Burnout

Every so often you just get sick of a game or genre you used to love. For me it was TF2, I had a complete set of Vintage weapons (still do) and every thing, I could sit and play it for hours, then one day I just got sick of it for no good reason, I stopped playing it completely and haven't played since late 2011.

So I ask what games has this happened to you for, have you gone back to them and were they as enjoyable they once were.

Boy, I feel like I can use that as an answer to practically anything gaming-related...

I've actually gotten burned out on it multiple times. Generally when I do I stop playing it for a few months and then return after the gear rush is over and people are back to just simply having fun... well, about as much fun as you can have when everyone thinks it's the most hilarious thing ever to spam [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker] in Trade chat every five minutes.

Hoo, yes. I burn out on MMOs like I burn out on nothing else. The progression/compulsion routine they burn into you keeps you playing well past the point of fun, making the burn out phase positively epic if you don't catch it in time.

Sometimes I just don't really have the drive to play any games in general but I guess a specific example would be Mass Effect. Every once in a while I'll just have the urge to start a new file in Mass Effect 1 and play through to ME3 and when I'm done start again. And then sometimes when I finish ME3 although other times it can be in the middle of the play through I'll just lose the will to keep playing and just drop the character sometimes even deleting him or her.

Another example will be The Total War games, I'll be playing as a nation and then just randomly get bored and abandon that file.

Same thing happened to me with TF2, I played like, 600 hours of that in one year? Then I woke up one day, and instead of playing TF2, went, "Eeeehhhh...". Now I only play it rarely, and whenever I do I just feel worn out and bored. ME3 multiplayer, the same thing happened, but I'm getting back into that because I need to grind up to unlock the new DLC stuff.

It also happens with single player games that I play solitarily. I don't lose interest, I'm just like, "Eh, I want to play something else today". I usually wait a day or week maximum with those, though.

I feel like I SHOULD be burned out on League of Legends, considering i've been playing it non-stop since April this year. Nope, it's still fucking awesome. I don't really randomly hop between games, I pick one or two and play them none stop for ages and learn every possible thing I can about it. So obviously, considering LoL's learning curve...

The 100+ characters help. I can always default to Lulu when i'm stuck with no flavour of the month. Lulu is best Champion in League after all.

I actually did burn out on Skyrim though. I burnt out completely when I walked into the room where you speak to some guys while the last boss dragon is sitting outside waiting for an epic last boss fight that will never happen. Too many things annoyed me in Skyrim, it's just a worse version of Fallout: New Vegas with dragons. Themes aside of course

Usually any competitive game or a game where skills really matter, when I go on without playing those games for extented periods, I come back to it eventually and realize how much I suck badly at them now that I havent been playing them regulary, I just quit them again (Or not, but I do DEFINITIVLY have a hard time getting back into those games again).


THE example for me its Left 4 dead. I used to be able to complete entire campaings in Expert completly and utterly Solo, no bots or players, just by myself.

Just yesterday, after not playing this game for about 3 months, I was struggling with ADVANCED of all the things!!! and WITH 2 boths and 1 real player. I didnt wanted to play much that day.

I probably didn't enjoy Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood as much as I could've because I went straight onto it from 2.

I learned my lesson and waited a while before playing Revelations.

I'll probably not get 3 at all, based on the more-of-the-same reviews.

Since... actually since the beginning of this year: All of them.
I fiddle about some Minecraft multiplayer these days or fire up a round or two of Battlefield, but that's pretty much all which doesn't immediately make me thing "I want to play something else" only to find out that there is no such thing as the nice "something else" I will enjoy.

My burnout usually happens on large, large RPGs. I'll play something for a long time, get right near the end of the game and suddenly lose interest in going forward. It sucks.

I do not really have burnout so much as cycles.

At the moment, I am just bored with all the current games I own, there are so many games coming out this year that I really really really really really really really want to play.

2012 was an awful year for me in terms of games. None of them really interested me at all.

Thinking about it, it was the same for me. I was playing nothing but LoL all year pretty much, ME3 was in March I think and I can't remember any other releases I was really excited for after that. I was just playing UMVC3 and LoL forever.

I bought Borderlands 2 and Halo 4 but I've put fuck all time into Halo 4 and i'm slowly inching through Borderlands 2 now because the Mechromancer DLC brought me back in and Deathtrap is a BEAST!

Didn't even consider stuff like Far Cry 3, Dead Space 3, AC3 the new CoD and a few others. I bought BlazBlue in I think early January and i'm still playing that.

So it's still only LoL, BlazBlue and UMVC3 and i'm not fussed about any upcoming games this year either. I mean i'll buy them and stuff but i'm not feeling hyped like I used to. I'm in quiet anticipation for Bioshock Infinite though.

I am already hyped up about games coming out this year, though the problem is, just feels like forever till they get released. Last big game I bought was Skyrim and its first impression left me disappointed so I am waiting for all the patches and DLC.

Seems like I do more reading about games than playing them nowadays.

Lot of stuff. I too burned out on TF2 a while back. I can still boot it up every now and again and enjoy it okay, but I very rarely play it anymore. I also think I might be approaching burnout with Skyrim, which makes me very sad. D:

Hell, sometimes I burn out on entire genres. I can't really play FPS games anymore, because I just feel so tired of the entire genre. :\

Well for me it was Pokemon for a while. Of course playing through Red AND Silver one after another does that to you I suppose. I didn't do very much of Silver's post game content before I stopped playing.

It's funny this has never happened to me. Probably because the genres I like are so scarce that it's like the heavens part every time one appears. God help me I need another awesome Fighting game, MetroidVania and a 2D platformer, with fries to go!

I used to like racing game, but I stopped playing them because I ended up restarting 37 times per race on the later tracks so I could get 1st place.

Turok 2 does come to mind. While it's still my favorite game of all time, I've played it so much that now I can no longer play it as extensively as I do most games.

It happened to me with Counter-Strike. I tried to return to it at some point but I just wasn't good at it anymore and was tired of seeing others camping each other while I was dead and waiting for the next round.
