Metal Gear Solid 3, Eva's monologue and Snake's resulting reaction is heart wrenching.

Spoiler warning dude. Thanks for ruining MGS3 for me.
The game has been out for 7 years, the world can't hide behind spoilers because you didn't play a game you probably weren't going to play.

Do you think I was angry at the world because I knew the twists in System Shock 2 and Final Fantasy VII before I played them? No.
It takes hardly any effort to make a spoiler tag. Plus, just because a game is old doesn't mean that everyone that wants to play it has. Not spoiling tagging things is a dick move, plain and simple, unless the thread itself says that there'll be no spoilers.

"The Darkness" had a WAY sad ending; who'd have thought a visceral shooter about a mobster possessed by pure, face-biting, chest cavity excavating evil could have such depth of story and truly touching moments??

Fallout 3 vanilla, since it was so unexpected and kind of touching.

Screw you guys, I thought vanilla Fallout 3's ending was better.
You mean the part where the main character is told to walk into certain radiation death, so he asks his radiation immune friend to do it, and he promptly refuses for no real reason? Then the protagonist says "Fuck you all, then."(at least that's what I imagined him saying) and lets the purifier explode, killing everyone.

Somehow that scene failed to affect me emotionally... I'm not quite sure why.

OT: Red Dead redemption was the clear choice, but that was taken by the OP. Instead I'll go with Mass Effect 2, simply because I was genuinely sad that it was over.

Yeah but age really matters when it comes to media, after a while it's not the persons responsibility to hide spoilers.

DO you think people do spoiler tags when talking about Star Wars VII in case people don't know Darth is Luke's father?
How do I do a spoiler tag? I'm still fairly new.

Wait..... what? I don't remember that happening.

Has a game ending ever made you sad?

Metal Gear Solid 3's ending made me really sad, he finds out that the government's been using him all along, and they made him kill the Boss just so they could cover up something that went wrong and get their hands on a lot of money.

Red Dead Redemption's ending made me REALLY sad for a while.
Agreed on Red Dead Redemption, it made me tear up a bit, though I do wonder why he didn't wait a couple seconds, go around to the back of the barn, climb up, and then pick off the marshals one by one.

Yeah, I know that, but it doesn't make your partner's reaction to your disappearance any less sad.
Never played time/darkness, but my treeko buddy was balling his little eyes out at the end of the pokemon original mystery dungeon game, too. I was surprised at how dramatic it was.

Chunsoft has the weirdest knack for sad endings involving small fluffy collectible creatures.

I'd say an MGS title, but the endings drag on for so long that I initially feel sad, but by the ACTUAL ending, i'm sort of in the mood for saying 'erm, are we done now? Because I got places to be'.

MGS4 was the worst, that whole segment with big boss and zero. Jesus Christ man... Just die. No disrespect, but he took his damn time, and repeated the same old sentimental garbage over and over....
