so i finally finished mass effect 3 last night. i was excited for the ending because i kept hearing how horrible it was and honestly, i thought it was one of the better video game endings i had seen. definitely much better than the ending to any of the other mass effect games. i mean i can certainly understand the disappointment that *spoiler* your actions didnt effect the ending (unless you had the extended cut) and it just came down to one of 2 or 3 choices at the very end of the game that determined which very similar ending you got. still, after all the outcry about the ending i was expecting much much worse and i certainly dont see how the ending ruined the entire game, as some people have claimed and i also dont agree that your actions in the first two games meant nothing. your actions affected the final game, just not the final ending.
anyway, im not here to talk about mass effect but the ending made me think about how some games just seem to have extremely love or hate endings. so what are some game endings that you loved but most people seemed to have hated. or what are some endings you hated that most people seemed to have loved?

endings are incredibly important to me so I dont think there is an example...

as for ME3...even if it was a lazy "shepard turns on the crucible, reapers die, dance party" it would have suited the game better..

aside from the fact that what we got defies all logic and explanation, the fact is its NOT artistic, its not deep, its not making any kind of statment, its a bunch of bullshit thrown together because "ummm...oh sht we neeed an ending"

but each to their own

I loved the Extended Cut ME3 ending. Zaeed on a lawnchair, and baby krogans, and many other "D'awww" moments.

The only ending I can remember really "Hating" was Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but then I hated the whole game, so nothing new there.

ME3, but not the ending you think! I never got this ending myself, but on Youtube I saw the ending where the Reapers win, but Liara left a beacon for the next wave of sentients. That one actually made me shiver. I know people would have REALLY lost their shit if that was the ending, but I think it's pretty cool.

Also Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. I think people were more upset at the lack of variety in the final few levels than by the ending itself. And sure, you were forced into waves of combat no matter what (my social-Toreador coward had to exploit the broken stealth just to get through), but by this point in the story things had gotten so bad all over that it actually did feel like the factions were going to war. As for the ending itself, I liked that it was possible for you to choose poorly. I personally sided with the Anarchs and let LaCroix have his precious little "artifact" - YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Everything turned out just fine :p

As much as that would have been a disappointment. At least it fits. The worst part of the ME3 ending as it stands is that it doesn't fit. It's a bunch of references to old sci fi, and what I think was meant to be art, thrown into a blender and craped out.

I liked the ME3 ending too (extended edition, anyway). But enough of regurgitating an old topic that has been talked to death!

I actually don't think the inFamous 2 ending is as good as everyone said it was. It was brave, yes, but I don't think that is the same as good. The ultimate tragedy at the end didn't really feel earned, I think. I mean, look at Persona 3: the tragedy at the end of that game was great, because it felt earned. The game was very tragic throughout, with numerous deaths of great characters. Compare that to inFamous 2 which was not tragic. The only deaths was one very early on and a whole bunch later. The ultimate tragedy didn't really feel built to, like it did in Persona 3; it honestly felt like it came completely out of left field. :\

I've only heard a couple of people say they dislike Final Fantasy X's ending but I really liked it. Again, I can't speak for the majority of people, just my three friends.

I was contempt AND amazed by the fact that Tidus doesn't make it through the whole thing. I was kinda expecting something to happen that would allow him to stay with Yuna and have a happy ending but...it didn't happen. And to see Yuna heartbroken, him jumping off the ship and his friends sort of waving goodbye was pretty bittersweet to me because I never saw it coming. Oh, and when he finally meets with Jecht and slaps him is like a way of showing that everything is fine in more than one way. It literally brought me to tears.
And then Yuna's speech! UGH! THE FEELS!

So it wasn't a happy ending. So we had to wait until X-2 for that. So what? It was a pleasant twist and I am happy...yet sad.

*Manly tear*

The wounds! You have reopened them! Is there no mercy in this world!?

...

I guess I'm kinda okay with the extended cut endings. Although it's more in a "okay, that's all I'm getting, fine then, I'll take it" kind of way.

On a different note, I wasn't disappointed by the Deus Ex: Human Revolution endings. Sure, the End-O-Tron 4000 was pretty lame, sitting just behind the corpse of the final boss with its four buttons in a neat little row. However, I was content with the actual ending cutscene content. I didn't really care enough about the characters to crave closure.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO NOOOOOO!

NO MORE TALKING ABOUT MASS EFFECT 3!

LET IT DIE ALREADY! ARE WE FOREVER CURSED IN A CYCLE OF PAIN AND HATRED?!

*cough* *gasp* *cough*

...

I've calmed down now.
Anyway, I love depressing or ambiguous endings. I preferred the ending to KOTOR 2 or KOTOR 1. That's something.

I think that if you like an ending, good. You don't confirmation from anyone else. Why should you say if you are a gaming hipster?

what do you mean? the rest of the game wasnt depressing enough? It worked pretty IMO, happy endings are somthing you ear..and Infamous 2 wasn't a tradgedy...it was a heroic sacrifice.

the part that really got to me was when quo, totally defeated cries and says she's scared and doesnt want to die, she didn't turn evil she was just frightened of dying

was that the extended cut (of which I have not played and would rather not have spoiled for me) or was it a possible ending they decided to remove? that actually would have been a good "possible/bad" ending as it makes a million more sense than what we got.....preferably not the only one though

Something like that, yeah. It feels like it comes out of left field, when compared to the rest of the game. With Mass Effect 3, the tragedy felt deserved. There were great characters and even entire planets dying everywhere, it had a somber mood, there was a lot of desperation and such... It made the final tragedy feel like it was built up to. I didn't really feel that in inFamous 2. It felt like it was trying to manipulate me into feeling things in the end it had not really worked to make me feel in the rest of the game. Basically, it felt kind of manipulative and that is very off-putting to me. :\

Heroic sacrifices are tragedies...

Three bangs, hopefully.

OT:

I really liked Human Revolution's endings. Listening to Jensen talk about philosophies was very calming after the intenseness of the final level.

Because outside of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and Assassin's Creed III, I can't even think of a game ending that I've not liked, or at least been content with, I'm going to use a joke answer for a game that I haven't played.

Kane & Lynch 2, because it meant the game was finally over!

The cycle must continue. The haters are legion. They darken the pages of every forum.

I liked the LA Noire ending.. felt gratifying to reward all my diligent investigation work with vigilante justice, also was fun to shout "burn the heretic" while burning people alive.
