Reboots.

Fuck , make a new IP . Don't ruin an already established Series. Using the name to make money.
I've never understood this one.

Making a reboot does not remove the previous titles in the series from existence.

Hell if they were gonna make a game like that anyway with fresh IP, people would say 'Oh, it's an X ripoff'; if they have the rights to the name, why not?

Then again there are plenty of reboots I've enjoyed (hello XCOM)

Single screen tutorials.
Probably the only thing I actually hate about (not broken) video games.

Yes. The only thing. I'm even cool with that.

I'm noy saying there aren't any good reboots , just they aren't necessary . More often than not , publishers/developpers use a well established series to ensure sales. A name carries weight . Using a well established name like ... I don't know Devil may cry ... It's garenteed to sell well regardless of if it's a good game or not . Even worst when the game is lazily done .

Take resident evil 6 for example. While it's not a reboot , the same logic applies. Resident evil 6 is NOT a bad game . But it's not a resident evil game . Had capcom named it anything else i'm sure the game would have gotten praise. But they did call it RE6. Why? Because by calling it Resident evil , people will buy it . It's as close to false advertising as you can legally get . Rename the characters, put in a different title an BOOM new IP .

Back to reboots . My problem with reboots is that they rewrite a story that we have come to enjoy . It's basically a new game , with old chacters . As if they old story never existed . All we have come to grow and love is now replaced with something different . Think of it like having a friend disappear , then someone else that looks EXACTLY like you friend appear. No matter how much alike they LOOK , they aren't the same person . That person may end up being a better person than your friend , but it would still leave a bad taste in your mouth.

I think when we say "ruin an already established series" what we mean is that the reboot has robbed any possibility of a sequel. That's usually the biggest issue. It's also annoying to see a story being handled by people who clearly don't have the same love for it as the original creators or the fanbase (as are many, I'm looking at you Ninja Theory).

Turret sections. they are boring and almost always break the pacing. at their worst they are also cheap if you dont memorise where stuff is going to be coming from.

Also, games that tell me to follow a person and then place a massive sign above the person in case i forgot what i should be doing.

"And with Dead Space 3's new weapon modding system, you can craft nearly limitless different guns!"
Except roughly ninety percent of every gun I could craft would suck, it's the same thing with crafting weapons in Dead Rising 2 and pretty much every other game that has create-a-gun. Regardless of which one I use as a base they all end up being the same basic gun.

I gotta admit, I've never played a reboot that's significantly changed the story, but then again how do you draw a distinction between story evolution and abandonment of established lore? Especially when a reboot made maybe 10 years later is clearly not written by the same people as the original.

I mean, a lot of people say that about Fallout 3, and I love Fallout 1, 2, 3 and New Vegas, so...I 'unno.

Shoehorned multiplayer or any sort of social conectivity in game that don't need it.
Yep. The amount of games I own with an online multiplayer component that I have never used, nor plan on using is quite impressive.

I also kind of agree with the unnecessary RPG elements. I like be able fiddle and customize my equipment, but if it makes no difference to the way I'll actually play, or it's an Arcade style game and it's just to pad out the length of a game, it can bugger off.

Protection missions. Fuck I hate protection missions. I made the decision to break a controller after I failed to protect a hospital ship in a Star Wars game. That was cathartic. And AI partners are (mostly) useless.

Any thing that stops me from playing the game. Most of which have already been mentioned.

Me, I'm pretty sick of RPG elements being shoehorned into everything. I'd like to see more modern AAA games that give the player a simple set of tools to use right at the start and keep things interesting through varied level design and enemy types instead of drip-feeding you a string of pointless unlocks/upgrades, particularly when said upgrades are poorly balanced and end up breaking the game's difficulty curve.
Fuck Yes! I see it every where, even in most flash games. It's true they can make the game more... addicting, but I'd rather they focus on making the game more interesting with out the maths.

I'm sick of multiplayer being tacked on to everything. I'm talking to you EA. Dead Space doesn't need multiplayer and you can take your co-op focused campaign and stick it up yer behind.

Did you know that a game doesn't always need multiplayer?
Ah, it seems I've been beaten to the punch already.

Loading screens. I am pretty sure no one likes them.
You're right. I'd much rather spend 30 seconds simply staring at a black screen as the game loads. That or spend £500 extra for the Solid State Drive on my console/PC to avoid the loading altogether.

OT: I think the main one for me is the Social stuff. Like NFS's Speed wall, and the radnet thing from Prototype 2. I don't have friends that play these games, all this is doing is taking up screen space!
500 GBP is vast overkill for an SSD these days. At that price, you can easily get over 500 GB of space without sacrificing quality. This is, quite obviously, way too much space for just games and some system info (console) or plenty of space for an entire PC (OS, games, media, and so on).

Escort missions. As much as I like everything else about it, The Secret World reached a new low here with an escort mission where the guy teleported back to the start when we were 20 yards from the objective. Twice.
Iron sights in shooters which force being slow and accurate with sights up vs. being fast and inaccurate while hip firing.

I just want to turn off the achievement notifications, how hard can it be to give me the option?
You can turn those off.Go to console preferences, notifications, Turn off notifications.
You're welcome.

OT: Superflous morality systems. Dishonored is one of the worst examples. The game is set up as a series of open areas to fuck around and creatively kill shit, then calls you a dickhead if you do anything other than go straight to the non-lethal option.

Most of the ones I would have said have been mentioned already, but one that hasn't is enemy level scaling. Seriously, in a game where your characters level up and get more powerful, why make the enemies in the earlier parts of the game do this as well? It makes your feeling of progression feel meaningless because they will always be just as hard to kill. I want to feel like a badass when I return to certain areas because I've gotten stronger. Even worse if the loot those enemies drops is scaled as well (looking at you Oblivion).
