Legacy of Kain series has a tonne of lore, I cast that as my bit to add.
+1 this. That series needs another game!
Apparently Square Enix (As they own the rights now) is having a reboot of Soul Reaver made, so you know, they aren't even going to finish the story...

Seriously, that law is really deep. But Mass Effect deserves some praise for the depth they gave that universe. It hasn't been completely consistent, but it was well conceived. WoW probably wins though, because the law was already good in the RTS days, but I can't say I've ever heard WoW stuff that's really gripped me like ME

This, I believe, is appropriate.

Are they gonna retcon the whole previous story, or no info has been given yet? (Just asking if I shall start to light my torch and wave my pitchfork around)

-Halo (except Halo Reach where everyone who read the books wants to forget)
Apparently that's been fixed by Halsey's journal, which was included in the collectors edition of Halo Reach. I've not read it though, and it does seem a bit stupid that they only put a bit of vital information about the game's story in the collectors edition. And yeah, playing through it I was like 'this is cool, but it couldn't have happened'.

Not a series, but Planescape Torment. That is if you're looking for richest as in best written and most enjoyable.

Not just eons of shit piled onto a good premise.

Warhammer 40k. It started in 1987 and the universe has been growing since. There is too much to even name, the different factions (Necrons,Tyranids,Orks,Eldar,Tau,Imperium) have enough back story to fill entire novels and maybe even more.
I could not agree more, there is so much there. It may be grim and dark to the point of oppression but it is lore rich. You can pick any faction or even character in the 41 Millennium and get several novels worth of "fluff" as they call it. Now that is not saying it has the most fluff or even the best, but I find the very grim setting and semi regular high quality updates make a very well realized setting. It is a place that is easy to understand and visualize do to the vast amount of art, books, and games that happen in lore. Also anyone want to talk 40k fluff or tactics hit me up.

Excluding things like D&D or any 40K games with decades of background:

-Elder Scrolls for metaphysics alone, not to mention 5 PC games, three or so N-Gage games and tons of in-game books.
-Warcraft, 3 games and almost 10 years of MMO canon (full of conflicts and retcons for sure, but still).
-Arcanum with the god circle, philosophies and backstories.

There is more for sure, but my list of games I've played is short.

I have to agree with The Elder Scrolls. You can create an entire university dedicated to studying the lore of TES. And if you read about it enough, eventually you'll reach a point where nothing makes sense anymore and you can just feel your brain drifting away.

Love it or hate it The Elder Scrolls has a very rich and deep lore and they put the effort in. And man do I love the lore. You could write a huge history book with that lore of the series. It's what makes it impossible to predict what comes next

The Geneforge Series has a surprising amount. It needs it, considering the games' central moral dilemma.

This about summed up my reaction as well

NO information at all except for what I just told you sorry... It frustrates me, as I would like to have seen where it went after the end of Defiance.

I am amazed how many people are saying WOW? I just thought it was a bad Tolkien rip off, that missed the point Tolkien. I mean I guess you could say that Elder Scrolls is kind of a Tolkien rip off or Dragon Age, but they're good.

metroid and tf2 have interesting back story's
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they are as rich or detailed as any of the mentions so far.
