RTS, 4X or old school RPG.

I wouldn't mind the newer action RPGs if they had interesting combat, beyond button mashing, but sadly they don't a lot of the time. Granted old-school RPGs may seem more boring in this department to some people, but if its made properly I actually have to think about what I'm doing, rather than just spamming buttons, and that is what I like - needing a strategy or tactic to get through something, and not in the "Your enemy is a HP soak with 10X normal damage" sort of way that Skyrim on hard goes for, as that's just BS. A clear hard-counter system, IMO, is best - where every action has a counter action that can be used if its an action RPG, or if its a normal RPG every type of enemy has a specific element/class/whatever that they are weak against. There's a lot less luck that way, and less random button mashing. Granted there also needs to be more to the combat system, I.E, placement of your party and the roles they play, how and when certain moves should be used, and a bunch of other stuff, but generally that should start to fall in line alongside a hard counter system, creating something that requires some level of thinking, even if largely basic, to get through.

Space sims. Seriously, what the hell happened to those? I've probably played through Freelancer at least a dozen times, so why hasn't anyone taken what made that game great and upgraded it with the power of current-gen technology? Not necessarily in graphics, since Freelancer's space graphics still look great; they could just add more stuff to do.

For me at least it's easier to make a list of the genres I don't really enjoy that much. I'm not a huge fan of platformers, puzzle games or sports games. Honestly there are even a few exceptions to that like Mega Man games (not the X series though).

Other than that, it's more about my current mood and what's available. Lately I have been cracking out on Borderlands 2 but I've been getting a little craving to do some racing which has me really interested in the new Need for Speed: Most Wanted. I think it makes me lucky, shifting desires ensure there is almost always something out that I will be able to enjoy or something in my backlog that I can get back into.

I guess if you told me I was going to be forced to only play one genre of games for the rest of my life I would go with RPG's just because the genre is so broad it can envelope a lot of other aspects in it, from shooters to brawlers to adventure and more. I also can get really obsessive about min-maxing which results in a whole lot more play time then I can get out of a more straight up shooter or other type of game.

However, I would think you were a dick for only letting me play one genre of games for the rest of my life. Why would you do that to me?

Real Time 4X (like Empire Earth and Empires: Dawn of the Modern World - if anyone remembers those) Classic RTS (Command & Conquer from RA3 Uprising and earlier, Warzone 2100), with the ocassional SRPG in vein of Valkyria Chronicles, and the Vehicle Combat games of varying realism (World of Tanks, and for your more obscure tastes, Gear Up is a fun game, one of the first to be submitted to Steam Greenlight. It's worth a look if you like vehicular combat games. www.play-gearup.com if you're interested.

Turn based strategy games, whether they're isometric or turn by turn hitters.
Actually just anything where strategy can win it, like a solid game of chess if you will.

RPGs, only because when I was younger, I used to finish an average game in about a week. So RPGs would last longer and would give me plenty of things to do. I guess that still applies today.
And I love the stories, for the most part. And the character development. And crazy armor and weapons.

I also love platformers because, well, I grew up with a NES and SNES.

I'll also play random puzzle games and FPS. And of course, musical games are my favorites too, though that genre kinda died as of recently. What I won't ever play is a sport game. Ugh.

I like RPGS but not JRPG with the exception of kingdom hearts I find shooters to depend what they are and I dont mind the odd stealth or sandbox game every so often.

I suppose my go to favourites in general would be RPGS (any kind but tend to enjoy more JRPGS) and Fighting games ala Street fighter, Guilty gear etc and that type. I never liked RPGS for a long time but that changed with FFVII which blew the doors wide open for me and allowed me to go back and enjoy prievious RPGS I never liked before aka FFVI being most prominent as for fighters I just fell in love with Street Fighter 2 when it came out pretty much everywhere back in the day and have enjoyed the genre since although I did get burned out for about 10 years still im playing a lot more again now which is good as there are some top fighters out and coming out this gen .I play quite a lot of genres though except simulation thats pretty rare. I suppose I also rarely play casual and serious games as well thinking about it.

Role-Playing Games, especially with an apocalyptic overtone. Especially with a 50's era jibe. Especially with light humor that makes the grimdark extra grimdark.

Or Real-Time Strategy.

FPS and platformers. I like one all gritty and dark and the other colorful and happy. Guess which one is which?

I'm partial to RPGs (Both Western and Japanese) and hack and slash games. I like most genres besides generic fps, though.

I play platformers very seldom but they are always exciting.
Main genre for me has to be JRPGs or Zelda type adventure games.

I can't quite remember the name of the genre, it's the one with dungeon crawling and permadeath, named after a game from the 80's. It's on the tip of my tongue...

Ready for a fairly in-depth answer? Here we go!

Pre-2002 my favourite genre would have been 'whatever Ocarina of Time is. I wouldn't have been able to come up with 'action-adventure with RPG elements,' (or however you want to classify OoT) because OoT was the only game in that genre that I'd played. My N64 was my only console. It was the first game I got with my N64, and remained my favourite for years. I quite literally must have beaten it close to 30 times. Looking back, I can't even tell you what it was about the game that struck me so hard, but, whatever it was, it got me hooked.

By 2002 it would have become 'whatever Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are: those were my two favourite games OF ALL TIME, (and they still rank pretty high on my list), and I would have wanted to play anything at all the reminded me of them.

By 2003, my favourite genre would have become RPG (not JRPG, because, at the time, I didn't know the distinction), because when I got my PlayStation 2, the first (and for a while only) game I got for it was Final Fantasy X. That was my introduction to the FF series, and for that reason, it is still my favourite Final Fantasy game. I kid you not when I say that for the 2 weeks I was home from school for Christmas holidays, I would wake up in the morning, ignore breakfast, play FFX until I got hungry (usually) around dinner, shower after I ate, and then jump right back into the game until I got tired (usually) around midnight. My parents were quite glad when school started up again. I think I worried them.

RPGs are still my favourite genre, and I play them every chance I get. It's been a while since I've played one that really struck me, though. Then again, I'm not wowed by many games these days. Maybe I'm outgrowing gaming as a hobby, I don't know. I certainly seem to play them less and less, despite the fact that I desperately try to keep up with all the new releases.

BONUS ANSWER: Least favourite genre: first-person shooters. Unlike the wonderfulness of Ocarina of Time or the time-sink of Final Fantasy X, I can't honestly pinpoint a game that made me dislike the genre. I think it's just because I don't find very much enjoyment in shooting things over and over again. I still play first-person shooters, but I don't own many of them, and really, most of the time I just play them because my friends do.
