I used to really love Beat 'em ups. But then they all started trying to be Dead Or Alive.

Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with DoA being DoA. I have issues with every beat 'em up now pulling out all the g-strings to try and look more like DoA.

(glares meaningfully at Soulcalibur).

Yes, yes, I know it's not FOR me as a consumer but c'mon it's a whole genre that has turned pretty weird and I just ended up feeling alienated from it.

I really did enjoy the last couple of Naruto beat 'em ups, though. Got pretty far on the survival modes.

As well as my love for JRPG's, I used to love, LOVE BEU's like Final Fight, Double Dragon, Golden Axe etc.

I think it's very undervalued how much a shortish blast on a BEU can satisfy you. 20-60 min and you either die or complete it. Ideal to pass away time cooking, waiting for a friend etc.

Whereas a lot of modern games try to be the long lasting, love of your life relationship which rewards effort and commitment, old school BEU's were a quick hand shandy off the local bike.

Anything played online. The difference in player behavior between Q2-CTF and today is palatable in its toxicity.

I would say any JRPG that isn't Dragon Quest (Mostly because it never takes itself too seriously, it feels more like a Saturday Morning Cartoon). Well I should be more specific, any JRPG that has heavy Anime influences in it. Not that they are bad but every time I try to pick one up and am beaten over the head with these nice guy goody-two-shoes characters who just want to do the right thing it just is an insta-snooze fest for me. I really wanted to try all the Tales games, I want to try the Atelier games, Agarest War series, Ar Tonelico, Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, Rune Factory, Valkyria Chronicles, The Last Remnant, etc. etc.

...but every time I look at these characters designs and the game synopsis on the basic story I just groan and roll my eyes, and know right away it's going to be very difficult for me to get into these games. I am sure they aren't bad games but they seem to have this childishness to their characters, and all the female characters seem immature either in how they are drawn (pink hair and voices like a 10 year old don't help) and all the male characters have this cut-and-paste feel.

But I REALLY want to be wrong, I generally like the gameplay in these JRPGs but the story and characters usually turn me off so bad! I mean I don't want something dark and gritty or moody for the sake of being moody, but I'd like a JRPG with a little maturity in it's writing and character designs. If anyone can recommend ones like that I would be interested to try.

Yes I know games like Dragon's Dogma and Dark Souls are "JRPGs" but I am not counting those since they aren't Anime-inspired.

Looks like most obvious examples have already been mentioned. I'd go with JRPGs and FPSs.

I don't even think it's that I've changed personally. I think those genres have changed.
I don't think there are many JRPGs on the same level as FF7 any more and I don't think there are
many FPSs on the same level as Half-life anymore.

Still, it could switch back. In recent years we've had Xenoblade Chronicles, Bravely Default and
Fire Emblem Awakening (close enough). Xenoblade X and FF15 both looking very promising.

Then with FPSs, Halflife 3 will probably achieve quite a lot. I'm also excited for Mirror's Edge 2, although
we know almost nothing about either of them.

Platformer.

I used to played and loved Mario related games and Donkey Kong Country but the 3D transition did not fare well for me. Well ok I did loved Super Mario Sunshine but Galaxy not so much. Heck I CANNOT completed Donkey Kong Country Return without resorting to using Super Kong to complete it for me! I don't know why but I find it harder to judged the jump height verses distance in a 3D plain and the controls is somewhat feel more sensitive aswell.

It's unfortunate too, because the DoA series does have really fun combat mechanics, and unlike a lot of games it looks like the characters are actually fighting. I get that the T&A factor was its original gimmick, but just wish it would outgrow it already.

I pretty much stick to Virtua Fighter IV Evo any time I get the 3D fighter bug.

I used to really love JRPG's. Other than experimenting with some of the lesser known series (SMT) or revisiting classics, I just can't get into them anymore for some reason. They had everything I liked. Adventure, Exploration, Bright Colors, and just a lighthearted sense of fun in perfect harmony.

But everything changed when the Triple-A Nation attacked.

Racing games for me.

Nowadays I find them rather frustrating since you'll most likely see that same slab of concrete a dozen times.
Only ones in this gerne I still play are Flatout 2, Demolition Racer and not sure if Carmageddon counts since Carma is more sandbox-ish.

Edit:
It pisses me off when on the final stretch of a long race you still get second because the rubberbanding on the AI decides its time to floor the gaspedal beyond the cars capabilities.

RTS.

From C&C, Red Alert, to Home-world to KKND. The graphics were awful by todays standards, but the game-play was phenomenal and highly addictive. The RTS genre exploded off the original hits, with a thousand clones, spin-offs and never ending stream of sequels, but with every successive title in the genre, a little bit more of the mechanic that made the RTS genre great was lost. In an effort to appeal to EVERYONE, RTS games were developed with a "stupefied" design standard, which is just a polite way of saying they were dumb'd down for the child factor. That and they were paced faster, and faster, so that any gamer could buy into it, and from there the genre went downhill and never really recovered.

I think RTS is the most under developed genre in the entire field of games.
