western fantasy RPGs, so stuff like Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age. I used to like it a lot but now the infodumps and excessive bullshittery makes me cringe half an hour in.

Open world games. I just don't have 200 hours to waste on a game anymore. I was quite disheartened when I heard Dragon Age was going open world, and the final game bore out my concerns that going that route would do nothing but dilute the series' story and character focus. There is an adage, "Brevity is the soul of wit", and I wish game devs would keep that in mind.

Also FPS, Call of Duty, Battlefield et al have killed the appeal of shooters for me, despite the fact that I have been playing them since Wolf 3D.

Definitely RTS'. Have had the third instalment of SC2 sitting on my coffee table for weeks, haven't installed it. As much as I enjoyed the previous instalments, I just can't bring myself to put the effort into finishing it off at the moment. I recently grabbed the Ground Control series during a steam sale though, and promptly installed both games, as well as Sup Com, so maybe my love of the genre will be reignited....

FPS - both single and multi. I haven't had a SP FPS really grab me for quite a while - DXHR was probably the last one, and that's not a simple FPS. I have a feeling I purchased the most recent Wolfenstein recently, so may have to give that a go, and will obviously be playing the new DX as soon as I can.

With MP FPS', I think it's a case of me not having the time to put in to get good again, as well as a lot of the people I used to play with having moved on to different games or life situations, has all made me really lose interest. I spent thousands of hours in various CS games, TF2, CoD etc, but my time is better spent either with other things or games that I can chill out with more.

Another "vote" for JRPGs.

It seems Extra Credits really got it right when they said that the JRPG has lost its way.

My gaming self was raised on the likes of Chrono Trigger and the older Final Fantasy games, but now? The writing in most JRPGs is just...meh to terrible. I wondered if it was just me, that maybe the writing was always terrible but I just noticed more as I got older and my writing skills improved, but no. I went back and re-played FFVII this past year and man...basic techniques of exposition and foreshadowing are seamlessly worked into regular dialogue in a way is completely lost in something like FFXIII, and when I bring this up, defenders say "just read the Datalog!" I'm sorry, but consigning basic, necessary exposition to ancillary text-logs in a primarily audiovisual medium is just an inferior way to tell a story. Yes, that's my opinion, but the academic world of literature and visual media agrees with me.

Hardware limits really helped JRPG's. Now that they can show you their true vision, JRPG's are too wordy and I personally don't care for most games looking like a cartoon, even the new sweetheart of the JRPG crowd, Atlus. Don't get me wrong, I hate realistic, gritty graphics even more than cartoon-y but I think Final Fantasy gets it right in the graphics. Not cartoon-y and not gritty. I also think voice acting has harmed JRPG's. I preferred giving my own voice to characters, I guess it's like people who love a novel and then hate the casting choices in the movie version of that novel. I am a fast reader and I the textboxes allowed me to get through text faster. Fewer battle animations were nice too. Play a modern JRPG and then go back and play an SNES RPG, the characters spend less time "dancing around".

The truth is that I suck at most games and I always have I guess. This is why I loved RPG's (that's console RPG's before they were called JRPG's), I could set my own difficulty and the games told a story. I remember shedding a tear on my first JRPG, Lufia and the Fortress of Doom and I was hooked on the genre. Lufia's theme still holds a place in my heart.

I played and loved the first 4 Mario games and the first 2 Sonic games. I used to love 2D platformers and I was good at them. I guess I lost interest with Sonic 3 and Yoshi's Island. I have nothing positive to say about Sonic 3 but Yoshi's Island is a beautiful game and I have owned it many times, SNES, GBA, DS and 3DS but I just can't get into it. I find it mazey and mazes aren't why I play platformers. I got lost in Sonic 3 too, not knowing which way to go. It sounds silly but that happened. I did enjoy the first New game but after that I just got bored with them. There was a time when I beat the Star Worlds on Super Mario World and The Lost Levels on the SNES but these days I can't even beat New Super Mario Bros U. I guess I could if I really applied myself but there is no motivation. "What's the point?", I ask myself. I didn't buy Super Mario Maker because I am sick of 2D platformers and Nintendo seems set on not giving us a 3D platformer. It's 2016, why is Nintendo pretending it's 1986? Also, the thought of playing a bunch of unprofessional, sadistic Mario levels is about as tempting as taking an arrow to the knee.

Let's see:

Sports games: I used to like sports games. But at some point they no longer appealed me (even old ones that I used to play). Not a real reason for it. Probably I found out other genres that I liked to spend more time.

RTS: Similar to sports games. I was a fan of Starcraft (I bought SC2 on release date), Red Alert 2, Warcraft 3, and similars. But again, at some point (in the middle of SC2 campaign) I began to lose interest.

MMORPGs: I think this is more about time constrain (as a single game require lots of time to play) than anything. I'm also very awful at socializing (never joined a guild or anything), so I have much less incentive to go back.

FPS: I was there at the time of DOOM, Quake and Goldeneye. But the prevalence of spungargleweewees and multiplayer focused shooters just turned me off.

RTS games. Warcraft was barrels of fun back in the days, but I didn't really go much farther than that. Starcraft did not feel that good and after a couple of lan parties I confirmed that I utterly suck at these types of games.

Visual Novels / Dating Sims. Most of them aren't that good and the really good ones are not easily accessible. Most of them are JP only and are only released on consoles.
I feel like after the VN boom we had a few years ago, that we just aren't getting very many good VN's anymore. Probably was seen as an experiment to see if VN's could break into the American market and either we just don't have enough people that want them here to justify translations or the natural knee jerk reactions to VN's is scaring them off.

I think America is probably gonna be on its own for a while in terms of VN's for the most part.

Anyway, as for myself, I've never really fallen out of a video-game genre in terms of desire to play it. My only issue has always been a lack of games of a genre to play. I still love platform games for instance but we're a far cry from the golden days of platformers during the N64 and PS age.

I get that these companies are just following the money, and the clamoring masses want their shiny AAA games they can beat without having to actually be challenged, but I think there's enough of a market that a publisher could make a decent profit off of an immersive, challenging RPG like Morrowind.
Play Dark Souls. Every NPC, even literal gods and godlike warriors, even those who are essential to the lore/story or for crafting or whatever else...anyone can be fought and killed. Also, it doesn't hold your hand and is consistently challenging.

I think the only genre I've really lost interest in is platformers. There's the occasional gem that might get me playing (Dust: an Elysian Tail, Guacamelee, for two, though I have not finished either of them), but for the most part, I get bored after just one or two levels and stop playing. The average platformer just does not really have a story of any kind so I have no desire to get to the end of the game.

I've also pretty much stopped playing games on PC entirely, so RTS games aren't high on my list of "must play" anymore.

As for JRPG's, it's not that I have lost interest in them, so much as that the ones released today are no longer the JRPGs that I like. I enjoyed the old turn based style of the FF and DQ games whereas that style of gameplay seems to have bee considered a relic of the past and no longer viable to create. So, I just don't play that many JRPGs anymore.

FPS as well for me. But then, I never *really* got into them. Not even HL (oh crap). Although it could be argued that Fallout was a FPS I enjoyed. Along with TF / Unreal Torny. I guess these days I prefer a game that makes me think over running and gunning.

Similar thing with platformers as well. Although I still enjoy a bit of Comm. Keen.

I suppose these days a lot of games like the platformer/point & click/RTS/non spunkgargleweewee shooter have been left by the wayside. Possibly because these games only were innovative at the time, but failed to evolve and became copied into stagnation, or they evolved into something else. And I guess this evolution can sometimes take away what one loves about a set of games.

Something similar here for me. I was never that good (except in Age of Mythology for some reason, guess it is the possibility to play much more defensive there than in other RTSs) and the older I got the more stressful my lack of skill became for me. Nowadays I can only play turn-based strategy, which I like a lot. Or stuff like Faster Than Light with its semi-turns (although the final boss battle brought me close to a heart attack due to its tension so after I managed that feat once i never went back into the game).

MMORPG for me. Every now and again I try to get back into one, but they all end up feeling bland and boring really quickly.

Racing games.

What was something I used to enjoy, it quickly turned into making me bored considering you keep seeing the same scenerey over and over. There are a few exceptions that I still play, but overal it is a gerne I grew bored of.

point and click and jrpg.
for jrpg it's all about the grind, I think once you have a job or limited time any level of grind just seems too obvious and unnecessary and point and clicks which I used to love unless 100% intuitive (which is basically impossible) just feels like it's designed by some moronic asylum dweller to fuck with me and I'll just google that shit before I waste too much of my precious time.
