As someone currently facing the prospect of redundancy I feel bad for the employees, it's a horrible time to lose your job with little chance of a decent redundancy package.

Whatever happens, hopefully at some time down the line, some Game shops will reappear on the high street. It would really be a downer if there wasn't a dedicated gaming chain on the high street.
While I certainly hope that a dedicated gaming chain fills the void I hope that GAME's practises of dedicating 3/4's of its floor and shelf space to pre-owned stuff, forcing publishers to pull games from digital distributors, and getting rid of surplus shovelware stock through console deals are now permanently consigned to hell.

The only people I feel sorry for in all this are the employees who have lost their jobs or whose jobs are on the line.

Charity shops are shops that are set up by a registered charity. They sell donated items and the money raised goes towards that charity. They usually sell old clothes, books and random clutter. I'm not saying you can't find some good stuff there but i've never seen games being sold (that would require people donating games rather than trading them in which i doubt happens often)

OT: While i think some of Games business practices were kinda stupid, it's a shame to see thousands of jobs go. Now pretty much the only local place for me to get games is Asda and apart from some preowned stuff they rarely stock outside of the top 10 charts although maybe that'll change now.

I've seen a video game in a charity shop, though I'm pretty sure it was so old it wasn't even on a CD ROM so I have no idea who they expected to buy it.

Haha well that's kind of my point. You're generally not going to be able to find games there and what you do find you won't necessarily want... so I won't be expecting charity shops to fill the void left by Game

This is a sad day for the UK high street. Oh well, at least I managed to grab everything I could before it went down.
Yeah, a shop with a terrible business model, archaic returns policy, and ludicrous pricing went bankrupt.

Oohh tragic days.

I know I won't be missing them.
What about the people who've lost their jobs? Have you ever even had a job?

This sucks, I feel for everyone who's now queueing up at the Job Centre waiting to get some dole through no fault of their own. I've been there and it's fucking horrible, especially when you have things to pay for like rent, bills and a car.

Well, the one in Southampton (uni town) was always empty whenever I went there and didn't have any PC games in stock, however the one in Ipswich (home town) was always too crowded to get into, but mostly because it was about the size of a small cupboard and had a small selection of PC games that were often much cheaper than anywhere else (including steam. For example skyrim @ £23).
I think most of GAME's customers left them years ago when CEX opened selling second hand games at dirt cheap prices. It's where I've bought all my gamecube/ps2 games.
I'm sad that they are closing because I know that in Ipswich at least, it just means another empty store on a dying high street that will probably become just another Christmas crap shop for one month of the year.

Well... Shit...

Not sure if I can more accurately sum up my thoughts that with that above sentence. Both Game and Gamestation are closing which means, I'll have to get games from either Play.com, HMV or Blockbusters. Those two stores have been in this town for as long as I can remember, probably before I was born and I'm 21.. Well maybe not that long but they've both been there a long while... That and this town is already suffering in the job department, with Game and Gamestation going down, they take down even more job opportunities.

So... Well.. Shit.

I feel bad for those who have lost their jobs, but as an Australian, I struggle to have sympathy for any video games retailer that bites the big one.

Karma is a *****.

You just described a Thrift shop to a T. Next time you're in one, poke around in the music CDs and the toys; I'll be surprised if you don't find at least one old computer game, even if it's something crappy for DOS.

I don't use GAME anymore due to Steam- so it's not got a huge amount of relevance to me.

Ah, but I remember the g'old days- back when every other Saturday, I'd window-shop at the nearest branch like a dog staring at meat, and I'd occasionally muster the money to by a PS2 game from there, or occasionally a game for my PC.

As much as it sucks that so many people are out of work (been there, not fun), I still can't find any sympathy for the company itself. Once I discovered Steam and Amazon, it was rare I ever went in there. I used to prefer going in-store for the 'personal touch', but every time I went in, I was quickly reminded why I shouldn't.

Ah well..... :-/

Employees in Republic of Ireland stores are holding a sit in apparently:

Sorry to see it go, I used to enjoy browsing in the one in my town.

GAME reaped what they sowed.

Seriously this is just terrible all around. GAME has been throwing their weight around and bullying other distributors and pulled a monopoly on the market, all while pretty much forcing used games down the consumers throats, and now there is a chance that it will just dissapear, with thousands of jobs gone, other companies that relied on GAME now in jeporady etc..

This just plain sucks. On one hand I am glad that GAME is gone, but this is just a mess for the games retail industry. I don't really think the anyone was ready for this. But I am really hoping this can get pulled together and maybe we can get more retailers and some competition going.

I am not really sad that GAME is gone, but the side effects are disconcerting. It won't really affect me directly since I pretty much get all my games digitally or via amazon/ebay, but I guess we will see what happens next in regards to what will happen to games retail.

The Game in my towns shut but the Gamestation is still open (going off what my friend said the other day), i do feel sorry for those who have been made unemployed but i don't feel sad for game they have always been overpriced (hell they were still selling modern warfare 1, yes 1 for well over £20 used) and they ruined Gamestation when they bought them. Gamestation went from beating Game everytime on price to just charging the same and having similar deals, and this is why i buy off Steam, Amazon and Shopto.net.

I never really saw how Game survived if i'm honest, half their staff obviously weren't gamers, their uniform was way too formal, Gamestation staff and uniform was alot better (at least in my town, friendly people actually knew what you meant when you were talking about a certain game).

Game shops are the most overpriced and outdated models around, I may not play enough games for the price to bother me. But I know when I'm getting fucked in the ass by greed.
