Game Idea I had the other night

s?So I'm a huge Roman history nerd. As I was reading through Robert Harris' 'Conspirita' for the third time the other night (a novel which I highly recommend as well as its prequel 'Imperium.' Even if you aren't a history fan, they are just good intriguing books, but I digress.)

Basically in this game you take control of a Roman family. Whether you are a "new man" from the provinces trying to carve out a place for your family in the elite oligarchy that runs Rome or are the heir of a old Patrician family which has fallen out of grace. You control the patriarch of your family and decide how you will make a name for yourself. Either on the battlefield, in the law courts, or on the Senate floor itself. Only those willing to grab opportunity by the throat can hope to achieve the ultimate goal of Imperium.

As your patriarch enters retirement, the legacy he leaves behind will either hinder or promote the career of your son. Will he follow in his fathers footsteps or forge his own path?

As the game goes on, your family estate/villa are decorated with the consular masks and military glory of your ancestors. Perhaps even one day your family can become powerful enough to make the boldest move of all and assume the title of Emperor.

If you have read all of this... congratulations. I just wrote this out as it came to me. the idea is that the game would be full of forging alliances with other families through marriage, backstabbing, intrigue. For me, this would be an awesome game. Thoughts? Opinions? Troll?

Could be interesting. Perhaps your character could rise up the ranks of the nobility and perhaps become a high ranking political official, maybe even emperor eventually?

Perhaps in tradition with roman history, maybe you could explore the city searching for merchants to make trade agreements with and other more shady characters such as hired thugs to intimidate your enemies or assassins if you are going for a more permanent solution. Also, as you grow in power, you could get your servants to do these things for you

I think a game like this would have a lot of potential as roman history has so much intrigue, corruption and outright murder in it to make an entertaining game.

I was all ready to lay into another retarded idea, but that sounds pretty good to me.
All the intrigue and backstabbing is what made R:TW so great. Not to mention the HBO Series so good.
Would battles be handled in an Total War or Mount and Blade fashion?

That would be a major issue as I wouldn't want to focus too much on the battles as to take away from the other elements of the game... but RTW battle style would be ideal given how awesome that game was.

But seeing as military service in Rome was a means to an end, at least among the higher ranks of society, it would be a necessity.
You'd have to be careful that it didn't detract from the feeling of following one mans story.
Early on, the battles should be more focused, in that whilst there is a large battle going on, you?d possibly only be in charge of a single cohort or century, at least until you moved up the ranks.

I agree about the importance of the battles, but not all powerful men in Rome rose to prominence in the legions. I'm just saying building that sort of stuff in takes a lot of resources and manpower...

I am hoping someone from a game studio picks up this thread, as some of the ideas here have real potential.

I for one would play this game, but only if they released it for the 360!
