One thing I do in my spare time is come up with ideas for games, mainly ideas for story and game mechanics. I was wondering if anyone else does this and what are some ideas you've had?

There's this guy alright.
He gets a gun.
Then like there are enemies.
He kills em.
Then it turns out, he is the enemy!

Also I thought a sandbox game GTA style except you play Chuck Norris would be pretty cool.

a game where your a page 3 model and have to kill as many old men as possible with flashes of your gargantuan cleavage and their subsequent heart attacks...

Or something involving being a leprechaun hell-bent on world domination, anything with dismemberment and an Irish accent is sure to be a hit with me ;)

Actually...would really love to see GTA Dublin!

I think about game ideas alot, but I never really write anything down but the game title I come up with. It's all in my head. I'll get to working them out in a document sometime soon. What are some of your ideas though mr. dangerious?

One game I would love to see is an SPS: Second Person Shooter.

One vs. One only, and you see through your opponent's eyes.

I'm thinking of a game not unlike World War Zero: Ironstorm.
Quite simply what if a war, similar to the first world war, never ended.

As time goes by war changes, as do the tools and tactics, and the player is never sure when their understanding of how things work will have to evolve. Time skips are used to allow significant advances to be introduced to the player but they always play as a descendant of either the original protagonist or another character they encountered to maintain a familiar feel.

This is not a game to be played, but experienced; it would be unafraid to leave the player facing insurmountable odds or trapped in some quasi-futuristic foxhole for potentially minutes as bizarre artillery rages overhead. Most importantly there would be a mode that meant that any death for the player ended their tenure in that period; death would be permanent and the story would adjust accordingly. Thus the player witnesses the descent of mankind into absolute barbarism despite all the "advanced", weaponry at his disposal through the degeneration of language, custom and appearance.

When the conclusion appears to have been reached, the final assault upon your enemy's headquarters, the player would be abducted by generic aliens and forced to face trial as a representative of humanity in an equivalent of the Hague's war crimes court.
The player would be allowed to admit guilt for his race's barbarism or defiantly claim innocence; depending on the choice made the game would have one of two endings.

Guilt: The beings berate the main character, unable to understand how his race could destroy themselves while still comprehending the impact of their actions. Returned to a post-apocalyptic wasteland not unlike the moonscapes of the battlefields of world war one the player finds himself alone with nothing but a pistol and a single round. Eyes flooding with tears the player is shown a constant stream of images of all the killing he has done as every playable character until you personally pull the trigger.

Innocence: The beings are disappointed but not surprised. Mankind is stricken from the records of intelligent life, nothing but beasts that thought they were gods. The player is returned to the game the very instant they left and personally executes the entire enemy command even as they surrender. The "victors", celebrate, the war is won. Cue patriotic speeches from your compatriots about rebuilding civilisation anew and the importance of peace.
The camera draws back from the scene as mournful music plays gradually drawing back showing the remains of the shattered Earth on a greater scale until the planet itself is shown from space, its very surface blackened and charred by the ravages of war.
The Earth fades to black.
Another gunshot rings out - followed by a scream, more join.
Silence.

I would like to play a game where you're just a ghost going around in everyday life and messing with things.

Like a horror survival game, only you're the one scaring the crap out of everybody. :p

I've always imagined that would be very... disorienting at best, god-awfully confusing at worst. I doubt anyone would play an SPS, even if it were one-on-one.

There IS a game like and they implemented it horribly.

A game adaptation of the Eye of the World Series could be good, if the designer didn't mess it up, which they probably would.

As in the Wheel of Time books? That would make a good, if incredibly obtuse, RTS or RPG.

Truth be told this was something I made off the top of my head for a "suggest an idea for a new sci-fi game". The whole thing is clearly ridiculous: "This is not a game to be played, but experienced", and I thought it seemed a little too mundane to fall under sci-fi.

Also would that ending really stand out that much among the shocking endings many games seem to have nowadays?

If the alien thing ruins it for you then simply ignore it and skip to the innocence ending, which is still intended to be overly melodramatic.

I can tell you wrote it off the top of your head. Feels like you just needed an ending real quick, so you get abducted by some aliens. Goes against the whole "what if the 1st world war never ended?" thing. That's the impression I got from the post anyways.

Yeah, I was more thinking RPG. Especially because within the 632 books of the series there's an amazingly diverse cast of characters to create the contingency of your "party" with. Especially Thom, or just make the entire game about Thom, that guys a pro.

I think the Alien idea in my point of view wasn't really to make the story Sci-Fi but as to reflect on war itself. I really like the idea of humanity being judged by their choices throughout a long terrible war, but i wouldn't use aliens to implement it.

I've been working on a RPG with meaningful choices and dynamic content.

If, by "working", I mean "hanging around on the escapist forums and trying to find good games to play that don't already bore me."

Anywho, having gone further than simply having a game idea, I have to say that the big trouble is that the devil is in the details. What looks like a cool experience in your mind might be a cool experience, but how do you leverage it into a lasting enjoyable experience, teaching an overgrown calculator how to project this along the way?

It's a tad longer of a trip that leaves me realizing that perhaps the initial seed idea, often little more than a setting, is the very smallest part of the game design. I could base the game on you being a rock at the bottom of a cow pasture refuse pile, and it would still be a good game if I bothered to get the details of entertaining gameplay right.

You mean this game?

I remember another game....maybe Nintendo or Genesis...where you had to scare a family out of a house as a ghost. But for the life of me I can't remember the name. And no it wasn't Beetlejuice. LOL

Moderator Quest.

You, the protagonist in question, has just taken a volunteer role as a moderator of an internet message board. Suddenly, the rest of the moderators are kidnapped by gypsies, leaving you to foster this internet forum into a forum for high-minded intellectual discussion, while the savages and heathens of the world are busy trying to turn it into another 4chan. Use swift edits, thread deletions and a liberal application of the Banhammer to achieve your goals. Join in the discussion or remain aloof and anonymous, watching your people's reaction to your actions.

Of course, it's a losing battle and you can't actually win the game, with a team of banned tards eventually dossing your forum off the internet.
