Mods can be great in games, they can add content to an already massive game, add some missing details, touch up old graphics, add weapons, make the game easier/harder and even fix what developers didn't catch.

I got a mod that made the load times in the Normandy go from a minute and a half between decks to 3 seconds. Turns out it's a problem tied in with dual core processors or whatever.

Another ME2 mod allows you to get anti-aliasing in Mass Effect 1 and 2. Hell yeah!

Lastly I'd have to say any hair mods in any Bethesta game since I don't think they're able to make a decent hairstyle.

Any mods that you found to be awesome to add to a game?

Rarely used mods, actually (I'm a loser among gamers, woe is me :p) but I have always found them interesting.

The Kobayashi Maru mod for Star Trek Bridge Commander turns a pretty crappy game with a woefully understocked lineup of ships into an awesome star trek "what if" simulator/blow stuff up fest.

I've played some modded maps on halo and got myself a mod for revan's robes with a cape and mask on KOTOR, and that was good fun.

A mod for Dawn of War that ads the Inquisition and Tyranids. That made me a very happy man. I also have a total war mod that adds a Lord of the Rings campaign but i don't have the correct expansion for it.

Europa Barbarorum for Rome: Total War, and Kaiserreich: Legacy of the Weltkreig for Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday.

EB may as well be an entirely new game for how much it adds and changes things. I do not miss the vanilla campaigns and units at all.

Anything for Oblivion that is generally helpful. For example, I have one that removes the heads from plants when you harvest them, and another that makes almost all my Alchemy ingredients 0 weight.

Oh man, back in the day about all I did was download and play Half-Life mods. Lets see if I can scare up some of the better ones:

My Favorites:
Poke 646 [http://www.poke646.com/]
Poke 646: Vendetta [http://www.moddb.com/mods/poke646-vendetta]
They Hunger [http://www.moddb.com/mods/they-hunger]
The Timeline Series [http://www.moddb.com/mods/timeline-series]
The Xeno Project [http://www.moddb.com/mods/xeno-project-i-ii]
Heart of Evil [http://www.moddb.com/mods/heart-of-evil-napalm-editon]
USS Darkstar [http://www.moddb.com/mods/uss-darkstar]

Good:
Sweet Half-Life [http://www2d.biglobe.ne.jp/~ks_wca/shlhtm/shl_fm_e.htm]
Chemical Existence [http://www.moddb.com/mods/chemical-existence]
Half-Life: Peaces Like Us [http://www.moddb.com/mods/half-life-peaces-like-us]
Todesangst [http://www.moddb.com/mods/todesangst]
Todesangst 2: Der Echte Feind [http://www.moddb.com/mods/todesangst-2der-echte-feind]

Funny:
Mike & Pete's Half-Life Sound Pak [http://www.moddb.com/mods/mike-petes-fun-half-life-sound-pak]

(Those are all Half-Life ONE mods, in case someone didn't notice that.)

Those are just some of the better ones I remember off the top of my head, there are oodles more mods that just haven't come to mind as of yet. The best part is that there are STILL people making and releasing Half-Life mods to this day!

I love, LOVE the idea of game mods. My copy of Half-Life I picked up back in the day for $30 and I've easily gotten a good 40-50 games-worth of entertainment out of it's engine from all of the work that dedicated modders put out. I'm just kind of sad these days with Half-Life 2, Valve did the right thing and gave out all of the tools and resources to make it as moddable as Half-Life 1 but it's so much more complex (as are most other modern games) that you all most need a semi-professional team to put out a really good mod. This isn't to say that it's not being done and that nobody is putting anything out, but it still doesn't compare to the heady days of ~2001-2006 when you almost couldn't throw a rock without hitting two or three really good map-paks or total-conversions.

*sigh*

Dystopia HL2 (Cyberpunk FPS woohoo)
This, forget mods, this thing is a game in its own right. A damn fine game in its own right, makes even the best multi player games (yes, even the valve ones that everyone loves) seem bland and unoriginal.

I never got the Tyranid mod because I'd heard it was heavily infested with bugs and glitches, but I do have the one with the Inquisition, which is just plain awesome.
Still, my favorite Dawn of War mod is still Firestorm over Kronus (a Dark Crusade mod). It adds a ton of new units for each faction and turns the rules and gameplay mechanics into something much closer to the tabletop game. What I liked best about it was that now when you play Chaos you get to choose which God you serve at the start of any match and then build up your forces accordingly. Try it, it's great!

EDIT: I remember a Dragonball Z mod for Quake 3, named Bid for Power. Out of all the DBZ games I've played in my life this was the most fun, all those fighting games didn't even come close to it.

Brotherhood of Shadow; Solomon's Revenge for KotOR. It's definitely one of the best mods I've ever seen with the possible exception of Garry's Mod. If you own KotOR, I command thee to install it, although it is a very big download. Here ya go. [http://knightsoftheoldrepublic.filefront.com/file/Brotherhood_of_Shadow_Solomons_Revenge;99985]
