I think there was already a thread on this subject, but I can't remember whether I found it here or elsewhere. If it was here, feel free to post a link, and I'll put it in the OP so people can direct their traffic there.

*ahem*

Post your favourite game that didn't come out in 2012, but that you didn't play for the first time until 2012. Simple?

For me, that's probably X-COM: UFO Defense (the 1993 one). Despite not running particularly well in the DOSBox install, it still runs well enough to not impact the experience too much, and it's an amazingly well-put-together game that everyone ought to play. It's that groundbreaking and amazing and all those other words.[footnote]My actual GOTY 2012 is probably XCOM: Enemy Unknown, coincidentally.[/footnote]

Edit: At time of typing, it is currently five minutes to 2013. I would like to take this moment to wish everybody a happy new year. Let's finally clear out our backlogs.

The two aren't that similar. Sure, the basic premise is the same, but enough is different between them in terms of gameplay that it's worth playing them both. And it's only $5 - normally. Right now, only half that. Beat the rush.

I think I only got Persona 4 this year, so I can safely put that up.

Probably Sonic Generations. First Sonic game I've played since Sonic 06.

Great game. One of the best Sonic games and platformers I've played.

captcha: Bat-Squirrel.

It looks like captcha is acting a little...

I bought Fallout: New Vegas a couple of weeks back, I love it. I was once attacked by a gang of old women in summer dresses, wielding rolling pins. You just can't top that shit.

..I'm eyeing up Populus: The Beginning on GOG though. I'm fairly certain it's the first game I remember ever playing, I am going to have the biggest nostalgiagasm in history when I get my mits on it.

The Witcher 2 is a good one.
And also, Osu!. That`s the name, with the "!" thingy and all. And I´m really addicted to it. Dangerous stuff, that osu!...
It`s just a simple music rhythm game, but somehow, i keep on getting new songs and playing more and more. Not really sure why, but`s it`s fun nonetheless.

Alan Wake.

It kinda counts for this thread, but it also kinda doesn't.
It got released on console 2 years ago, but only got released on PC this year (and I played the PC version).
Also, this. Played it, loved it.

Oh, I don't know, after a year on the GoG I have so many, not to mention my rekindled interest in the PS2. Erm, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath or Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Stranger's Wrath is, well, Oddworld, so quirky, interesting, fun. Future Perfect is also really fun, and I do love a good cheesy catchphrase.

Battlefront 3. Instead we get a dancing game with a sword mini game sort of dangling off it and Star Wars 1313, also known as Gears of star wars or possibly Grand Theft Star Wars IV.

I don't know if Persona 4 Golden counts or not, what with technically being a game from 2008 but being marketed as an enhancement or something?

If not, then I'd maybe have to go with Bioshock, which I originally started playing last year, but never really got around past the 25% mark or so until this year.

I've played a fair few games this year, so it's a bit difficult to remember.

I didn't play many games for the first time this year. Let's see, I bought Mass Effect 3 and Borderlands 2, and I played Deus Ex:Human Revolution, Champions of Norrath with my roommate, part of Heavy Rain, and part of Persona 4. Weird that I didn't finish those last two, I was really enjoying both of them. I should definitely go back and do that.

Anyway, the two that were released this year are definitely the two best I played, but among the ones from previous years...Deus Ex:HR, hands down. Love that game, probably the best I've played of 2011's games.

"but that you didn't play for the first time until 2012." You haven't played Battlefront 3. Nobody has. Therefore, it's not a valid choice for this list.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Battlefront 3 has the same chance of actually existing as Half-Life 3. Live with it.

I didn't play Dark Souls or Uncharted 2 until this year so, tie. Dark Souls because I was swamped with games when it came out, so I gave it a rain check(that was an extremely busy time for anyone who enjoys action or RPG games(or action RPGs, for that matter). Uncharted 2 because I was late getting a ps3(2010) and missed it initially. Friend of mine told me to pick it up, and I'm ever so grateful to him for it.

Metal Gear Solid 3 I decided this year I would play through all canon Metal Gear Games, from Metal Gear 1&2 to MGS Peace Walker (I also played Portable Ops and Twin snakes).
I'm really glad I did as Metal Gear is now one of my favourite series.

The Binding of Isaac. I discovered that game and just lost myself in it. It also opened me up to games with roguelike elements. I'll even be buying it again when the new version comes out.
