ME1 for me. I waited to get ME3 second hand, without the starting DLC because I didn't want to give Bioware/EA money for their money grabbing practices. But before that I wanted to do a play through of 1 and 2 as well. So yea...ME1 has it's faults with controls and the MAKO, but it's still game of the year worthy to me.

Catherine, which is an extremely edge case for me because I only got to play it this year because it was actually released in early 2012, but only in Europe.

Unique block pushing fun times, works the mind, extremely challenging but fair which makes it always satisfying to clear a tough puzzle, all this interspersed in a story about infidelity and relationships. I don't think I'll play anything like it ever again. Definitely one of my games of the year but won't be for an American.

Metal Gear Solid 3, it took me years but I finally played it through from start to finish.
Having never owned a PS2 I'd only played it on a borrowed PS2 and had to stop before Groznyj Grad, it bummed me out because I was enjoying the hell out of it, but finally... this year I did it!

Aside from XCOM, MGS 3 is my GOTY, the story thrilled me, the characters were excellent and game wise, best MGS bosses (The End and The Fury are my favourites) some of the best set pieces (I loved the whole Shagohad section, in spite of it's old silliness) and my favourite MGS ending yet (Poor Boss)

And it has dethroned MGS as my favourite (although I still love MGS 4 in spite of it's obvious trolling and dumb Drebin shop system, it does offer pure freedom of stealth in many ways)

Am I allowed to say Bioshock Infinite even though it's bound to win GOTY next year?
You had to have played the game this year(assuming that means full game, no demos), so no you cannot.

Dark Souls, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Assassins' Creed II all became games that I simply could not tear myself away from.

The Witcher 2 by miles, that game was amazing. (Admittedly its not that old but still)
Same here. I began playing through The Witcher on December 2011, and The Witcher 2 in April 2012. Both of them are great. I liked the first a bit more though.
Honestly I couldn't stand the first, I gave up within an hour; I hated the combat and gameplay to much.

For me Bioshock. Didn't get round to playing it til March this year mainly because I assumed it was gonna be too scary for me. I beat it 3 times in the space of like 5 days and i'm like only missing 1 achievement which in my case is a rather big thing annnnd it was probably the first game I ever played where I didnt die once.

Uncharted 3 is a really close 2nd though.

I guess it's between Bastion and Killing Floor. I'd say it goes down to replayability, and Bastion... hasn't really cut it. I've done the ending that suggests replaying the game in New Game+ mode, but even that doesn't make the game much less boring.

Killing Floor is likely to replace Left 4 Dead 2 as my go-to zombie-killing FPS, as Killing Floor has dozens of weapons and funny characters. However, another honorable mention goes to:

Sonic Generations.

Great game. One of the best Sonic games and platformers I've played.
Oh, and The Binding of Isaac gets a semi-honorable mention because it's wonderfully replayable, but caused me to rage-uninstall 3 times already.

Mount & Blade: Warband is the constant yearly winner for me. I think I have more hours spent playing it than most of my other games combined.

There are two that are on my list.
1) Fallout New Vegas. By far my most played game of all time. 44 characters strong and each one was completed. Love the game to death and now that I've got the PC version I've got mods to keep me even more occupied.

2) Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. LPing this game over the last 3 months has really reminded how much I loved the first Kingdom Hearts game. Since it's the Final Mix it is also really difficult and adds so much more that I can't help but be happy whenever I play it. Of course translating it for others is no fun at all. >.>

Has to be Persona 4. Though it's not exactly the best for me, it's still awesome and I heard of it this month. Played it like mad for two weeks, so it kinda lost it's luster me right now. To be continued next year I guess. :)
