5. Mass Effect 3; in spite of the shit ending, the gameplay, other 90% of the story and multiplayer were phenomenal... too bad the ending brings everything in the franchise down with it.
4. Journey; amazing graphics and great music, very emotional.
3. XCOM: Enemy Unknown; Amazingly optimized for the controller, great squad gameplay, highly replayable.
2. Borderlands 2; Great story, hilarious writing, epic gameplay (Mechromancer is my current favorite) and nice graphics.
1. The Walking Dead; I cried at the end of the fifth episode. Any game that can make you cry deserves a place among the best games of all time.
Actually, screw Mass Effect.

5. Journey
4. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
3. Borderlands 2
2. Mists of Pandaria for introducing such a beautiful new continent, great raids and gorgeous music.
1. The Walking Dead.

I can't say for sure yet, as I'd like to play Far Cry 3, but of the three I've played so far, I'll have to say Halo 4. It's close, though, as AC3 was pretty good.

I haven't played much of this year but I'm gonna go with Kingdom of Amalur. Game really hooked me in and I haven't see such a beautiful game world since nineties.

Best Story: Spec Ops: The Line
Sure it cribbed parts of Apocalypse Now wholesale but its story stopped me dead in its tracks and made me think.

Best FPS: Borderlands 2
Both light and dark humour abound in it, add in the unique art style interesting characters and a Bad Guy that has no moral ambiguity easily puts this above the other FPS on offer.

Best Game of 2012: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
It has its issues (what doesn't) but I love it and what it could represent, a shift from a FPS dominated AAA gaming scene (lets face it it's getting pretty saturated now) to a more diverse line-up of well funded games.

Honourable Mention: Dishonored
Whatever you say about anything else, the world Arkane created is beyond anything created this year.

Um. Journey. Game of the Year, Game of the Decade, Game of My Life.

Barring that, I think my personal nominations for GotY would be...

Kid Icarus: Uprising, for being different, engaging and a hell of a lotta fun.
Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance because I'm obligated as a fanboy.
Dishonored for bringing in some fresh flavors and hopefully starting a brilliant franchise.
And finally, Tokyo Jungle. Because have you seen that game?!

I still have a few games from this year I need to play. Like Borderlands 2 and Unfinished Swan. So take my post with a grain of salt.

I was going to say Mass Effect 3 for first place, but I've just finished Persona 4: Golden... so yeah
1)Persona 4: Golden
2)Mass Effect 3
3)The Walking dead
Though Persona 4 itself is already a few years old. Not sure if remakes should count :p

For me it's Dragons Dogma, or Dark Souls (PC) if we count remakes.

All this talk of Walking Dead has me downloading it now on XBL. When it first came out I honestly rolled my eyes at it. I'm a big fan of the show, but I don't put much faith in video game adaptions. Good to hear that so many have enjoyed it. I'm sure it's going to be crazy.

As for GOTY 2012... that's a tough one. Even though it was late 2011 that it came out, Skyward Sword was a mega game for me this year. It was so nostalgic and wonderful to step back into the world of Link and Zelda. Really so cute.

Mass Effect 3 was phenomenal despite all the hatred it received. I literally did not pull myself away from my PC until I finished it. I then proceeded to weep profusely due to what an emotional roller coaster ride the story had been from me and from the realization that we had just closed the books on an epic tale. It was super powerful.

So, yeah, I think Mass Effect wins for me. I play WAY too many multiplayer games like DotA and COD that I miss so many great single player titles. Well, I'm off to the land of Walking Dead. :)

The best AAA I've played so far is Dishonoured, but I've only just got Far Cry 3 so that's subject to change. Best PSN/XBLA type game I've tried is a bit tougher though, I can't decide between Tokyo Jungle, Journey or Mark of the Ninja.

Well, i've never played the original, so that counts for me.

Right now I would have to say Borderlands 2. It's got everything I liked about Borderlands 1, they just added more and streamlined it a bit.

However I haven't tried Xcom yet and I bet I'll like that.

This is a difficult one because i seriously haven't played a single game that i thought was spectacular that was released this year. And i played through and completed the walking dead.

So i guess that the only things i can possibly think of that might be good are games that i haven't actually played yet, but have interested me enough to pick them up at christmas.

So i guess it's between any of these following games, i haven't actually played any of them, so i don't know if they actually ARE any good- i'm just going on how good they LOOK. I did try the demo for xcom.

1. Thomas Was Alone - The graphics, narrative and soundtrack all look like they've been put together perfectly and the game should play nicely.
2. Little Inferno - A nice change of things, this game looks to be well made and i like the idea behind it, even though it looks short and too expensive by about £5, since it's so simple.
3. Botanicula - Looks like it has some really nice artwork, although i'm not sure if it will play well.
4. Giana sisters - It looks like a good mario clone with a slight change. Not really anything new though.
5. Fallen Enchantress - I like the idea behind it, and it looks like the monster design is good, however i've also heard some bad feedback about it, so i'm not sure if it'll be too good.
6. Xcom- Enemy Unknown (tried the demo of it, it looks okay but it put me off because it seems like it doesn't look as good as the original Xcom (lack of inventory). Still probably going to get it and might end up enjoying it yet, though.

Also, just for the hell of it;
7. Hotline Miami. I bought it and completed it. I enjoyed it, but it was waaaay too short (4 hours long) and same-y. And even though it has quite a fair amount of weapons, it seems like there's only about 3 or 4 firearms that you even come across during gameplay, even though there's loads of others that you unlock later, that seem to be never actually added into the game.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Journey.

And while The Walking Dead was an amazing story and character experience, as a game it was quite forgetable. That is to say, after I finished it that sensation of 'I really wanna play this again' just wasn't there.

1. Spec Ops: The Line

Played it pretty late, and it completely blew my mind. I love the concept, story, graphics, music, characters and every little thing about it.

2. Diablo 3

Not as good as I hoped it to be, but still darn good.

3. Mass Effect 3 would have been here, it if didn't disappoint me so hard. So, I guess I'm keeping the third place blank.

For now my contenders are:

- The Walking Dead
- Spec Ops: The Line
- XCOM Enemy Unknown

Mass Effect 3 just didn't do enough right compared to those three to be in that list. Dishonored I have yet to play more of and the same goes for Journey.

2012 was pretty awful as far as games go.
No it wasn't. Just because it didn't conform to your tastes doesn't mean it was an awful year.

If anything it was one of the best years yet. Clear signs that the modern-warfare-shooter trend is beginning to end with Medal of Honor flopping and even Black Ops taking a different route, the indie market spreading its wings even wider, the XCOM remake being fantastic and a commercial succes proving that not everything has to be remade as a shooter to be successful and some surprising hits that really lifted the medium up as a genre and proved even more that videogames as a storytelling medium are maturing more and more; Spec Ops: The Line, The Walking Dead and Journey.

Yes, 2012 was a brilliant year for this medium.

Dishonored for me so far, but Far Cry 3 is ridiculous amounts of fun so may be in with a shot.

Halo 4 was good but didn't blow me away and Mass Effect 3 caused so many confused conflicted emotions that I still don't know what to think.

Gotta say, Its looking like Borerlands 2 so far. GUNS. GUNS. GUNS. The Music was great. The story was great. The characters were great. Handsome Jack /thread

Halo 4 was good, but its suffering from what I call "REACH syndrome". the more I play it, the less I enjoy it to a point where I just don't want to play it any more.

Mass Effect 3 had a brilliant storyline, with some really emotional scenes, but the ending didn't really capture that vibe for me, the Extended Cut improved it a lot, but it still wasn't up to par with the rest of the game.

From what ive seen of AC3, it looks good, but I've heard a lot of flaws with the games story and characters, while it looks good, I don't think it'll be AC2 "good". But I'll guess I'll see for myself at Christmas.

Guild Wars 2, If only I didnt loose interest in the MMO genre to not buy it at launch, once again, ill find out at Christmas.

Far Cry 3, this looks like the only game to knock Borderlands 2 off of my arbitrary 'GOTY' podium, but Vaas... so much awesome in one character.
