Game series are like a dogs life if its short and sweet and loves you back you know it should only live to about 3-4 games but then some people try to revive the dog to try and make you happy but you know the dog is dead inside and no new technology or colour will make you love it again. Then there are the games that live for a very long time and in its older days you begin to realise it was more fun when it was younger and lots of energy.

Look what im trying to say is what game series/characters need to be taken out back with a double barrel and a shovel so you can bury it so far under the ground no one will even try to revive it. For me it has to be most of nintendos series as most of them are now so old they are begining to smell and look unhuman.

Wow that's an extremely gruesome way to look at games..
"Taken out back with a double barrel and shovel so you can bury it so far under the ground no one will even try to revive it"
seems a tad harsh O.O

To me I feel like nintendo is trying to retell the same story but with better quality to it, so people even now would know about mario despite him being made years ago. The same couldn't be said for half-life or 007 Golden eye.

So yeah I agree with the people above me, No big problems with crummy games I just ignore em.

I believe they should stop making Sonic the Hedgehog games for the franchise's own good. Every Sonic game they release nowadays hurts me a little inside. Please, let the blue hedgehog rest.

Wow.... that is really..... wow...

Anyway:
Call of Duty
Mario
Sonic
Pretty much any series that is milked to death. I understand a lot of people like these games but they wouldn't be milking them if people didn't like them.

Final fantasy, just die already.

I can't imagine that this opinion is controversial enough to require a flameshield.

Anyway. Even though I don't quite agree with the hyperbolic phrasing of the OP, I personally think the Fallout franchise needs to end.

Silent Hill. Please, just end it. I can't stand the pain anymore of getting my hopes up at a new game announcement then having them crushed like a bug. I understand that Downpour was a step in the right direction, but please just let it die! Or at least make a good HD collection. A HD collection that's more than just 2 games.

No game series needs to die. What should happen with series like AssCreed, Final Fantasy, and Call of Duty is that they should pause so that they release every 3 or so years so that the games get the proper development they need and so that there's time to enjoy other stuff.

Minecraft2 and 3 , I hear the sequels are going to be terrible, Notch is trying is using pyramids instead of squares in 2 . Worse yet in the third the 'blocks' are hyperbolic paraboloids.

*serious face*
Nahhhh i dont think any series need to end cos then the whole production team loses their jobs :( And thats always a bad thing.

None, if I don't like a particular series I just don't buy it. And only 3 or 4 games per series?

So that would leave the Metal Gear games at Metal Gear Solid 2, missing out on Snake Eater (that many consider the best), Final Fantasy at 4, missing out on 6 and 7. The Elder Scrolls would miss out Skyrim. Sonic would miss Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Generations and other games that people enjoy. Mario would miss out an absolute ton. In Legend Of Zelda, you wouldn't have Ocarina Of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword.

I hope you get my point by now, but yeah, many series wouldn't have had their best games if you arbitrarily cut them off at 3 or 4.

There aren't any franchises that I think need to die. But there's a lot that I think need to go away for a while, either to be missed, or too try and figure out a new design theory for themselves.

The main ones would be...

Mario. Still makes great games, but the last one of his games that really wowed me was the original Mario Galaxy, and you can feel the staleness creeping up on the games.

Zelda. While it's not over saturated, and the design formula still works incredibly well, (it's used by other great games without getting bashed by critics) the series definitely needs thorough redesign, if it doesn't want to get killed by it's own nostalgia.

Call of Duty. Never gonna happen because they still sell like crazy, and if the series was out of the spotlight for any longer than a year the stranglehold it has would probably be lost to whatever the next big thing is. But if one of the developers were to step back for a minute and strive to make a more mature, and evolved game, the series could be great again.

Uncharted. Let's let Drake have a holiday before before running him through the wringer again.

Half Life. Valve are so in our faces about it, you can never seem to get away the bloody series! I mean come on, try another franchise for God's sake?!

Edit: I was being sarcastic with the Half Life post.

I wouldn't say the Mario series as a whole, because far more original stuff has come out of that series than a vast majority of other triple A franchises, but the New Super Mario Brothers subseries needs to stop. Yes, the ones on the DS and Wii were good, but at this point, they're not really doing anything dramatically different in each of them, and the whole "hey it's a new 2-D Mario" thing has gotten old, considering that I'm pretty sure more 2-D Mario games have been released than 3-D ones since New Super Mario Brothers came out.

Nintendo, I love 2-D Mario games, but you have to do something different with them, otherwise I'll just continue to not caring about them.

Unrelated, but does anybody think it's ironic that Dish is promoting their ad-free TV with a metric fuckton of ads?

I see some people are shocked about how i described game series when i meant 3-4 games i meant the series earlier games. And for the record i couldnt really think of any other way to describing a game series ending.

Wait, wut? Valve has done 4 Half Life games so far (not counting expansions and multiplayer), and they left the last game on a massive cliffhanger and haven't released a Half Life game since 2007. In the meantime they've revitalized Team Fortress, made Left 4 Dead, made Portal into a franchise, made an official sequel to Dota and done another Counter Strike. How are Valve "in your faces" about a series that hasn't had a game in 6 years?

OT: I don't really think any game series should end. If people keep buying them then companies are going to keep making them. I shouldn't want CoD to die in a pit because I personally don't like it, it'll be taking away games that a LOT of people like.

Quoted for truth. Although, hypothetically speaking, there are a few series that I really do think have run there course. Them still being around doesn't bother me, it's just that I don't really see them having anywhere left to go except round in circles. Besides, when games of a particular franchise stop getting made it's not like anything has actually been lost. It's not like the old games have gone anywhere, they're still around and still perfectly playable so long as you have the right hardware, so it's not really a parallel to something having 'died'.

But yeah, if they stopped making Final Fantasy, Sonic, and Metal Gear Solid games tomorrow I certainly wouldn't shed a tear.

Nope, there's been exactly the same amount of 2-D and 3-D Mario games.

3-D: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land
2-D: New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros Wii, New Super Mario Bros 3D.

Just pointing it out. But yeah, I agree that they've got to do something different with the side scrolling platformers, not end them of course. But, the 3D ones I can guarantee you will be different every time. I can't fathom what Nintendo's got in mind for the Wii U 3D Mario.
