Game series that need to end

I don't think any series has less of a right to exist than any other. If sequels are being made, then people still enjoy it because it's still selling. It would therefor be unfair to declare a game someone enjoys shouldn't exist.

If you think certain series like Final Fantasy or Asscreed or whatever sucks now, and that the series should end because of it, Squeenix and Ubixoft would just move on to making other games with the same level of quality.

Half Life. Valve are so in our faces about it, you can never seem to get away the bloody series! I mean come on, try another franchise for God's sake?!
Wait, wut? Valve has done 4 Half Life games so far (not counting expansions and multiplayer), and they left the last game on a massive cliffhanger and haven't released a Half Life game since 2007. In the meantime they've revitalized Team Fortress, made Left 4 Dead, made Portal into a franchise, made an official sequel to Dota and done another Counter Strike. How are Valve "in your faces" about a series that hasn't had a game in 6 years?
He was being sarcastic.

First one that comes to mind is Splinter Cell. Have you seen gameplay for Blacklist? Holy crap it looks shit.
Yeah, actually. That. I was trying to think of something, but then I saw that. Unless the game after Blacklist is Chaos Theory 2.0, it needs to be smothered in its sleep.

There aren't any game series that exist that really need to die, I think. Most of the commonly listed on shit like this - Final Fantasy and Call of Duty - are incredibly disconnected from each other, series only held together by common themes and gameplay with few persistent characters. The Final Fantasy series does not need to die because -it is not actually a series-, it's far closer to being a small subgenre. Think about it - individual games have had sequels, there are no common characters, locations, or much of anything except spell/summon names and some very basic gameplay mechanics. Square-Enix could very easily just give them all their own name instead of Final Fantasy XV or whatever.

Just pointing it out. But yeah, I agree that they've got to do something different with the side scrolling platformers, not end them of course. But, the 3D ones I can guarantee you will be different every time. I can't fathom what Nintendo's got in mind for the Wii U 3D Mario.
AFAIK Miyamoto doesn't direct the new super mario bros. games, if he even works on them at all. They're like Nintendo's equivalent of FIFA. They know they'll sell, so the budget and requirements set forth by the higher ups are probably extremely narrow.

Miyamoto on the other hand always holds off on making new console Mario titles until he comes up with something really out there. 3D, a water jet pack and sentient slime, or a gravity system, for example.

Valve has not released a statement about Half Life for roughly 3 or 4 years by now. Everytime HL is in the news it is not Valves fault, they ride the "we announce when there is something to announce" train. And furthermore: Half Life had 4(!) games of which the last was released in 2007.
I do believe he was being sarcastic.

OT: I just ignore franchises I don't like, but I'd be curious to see what the teams behind CoD would make if they weren't made to keep milking that franchise. I imagine they must be sick of making it by now, they must never get a moment's rest.

None.

Any game series can potentially be revitalised with a new story, a new pitch on the characters, a change if gameplay. It just requires a fandom who won't ***** about everything that changed and a developer willing to risk it.

Assassin's Creed. It's not even at the end of the trilogy and I have no hopes of seeing anything truly new from the franchise. I'm done with it.

Silent Hill. Seriously, the franchise itself is so tortured that I think there's an otherworld town for the game itself.

Resident Evil. Seriously, stop trying guys. Zombies just aren't that interesting any more.

I wouldn't say the Mario series as a whole, because far more original stuff has come out of that series than a vast majority of other triple A franchises, but the New Super Mario Brothers subseries needs to stop. Yes, the ones on the DS and Wii were good, but at this point, they're not really doing anything dramatically different in each of them, and the whole "hey it's a new 2-D Mario" thing has gotten old, considering that I'm pretty sure more 2-D Mario games have been released than 3-D ones since New Super Mario Brothers came out.

Nintendo, I love 2-D Mario games, but you have to do something different with them, otherwise I'll just continue to not caring about them.

Unrelated, but does anybody think it's ironic that Dish is promoting their ad-free TV with a metric fuckton of ads?
Nope, there's been exactly the same amount of 2-D and 3-D Mario games.

3-D: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land
2-D: New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros Wii, New Super Mario Bros 3D.

Just pointing it out. But yeah, I agree that they've got to do something different with the side scrolling platformers, not end them of course. But, the 3D ones I can guarantee you will be different every time. I can't fathom what Nintendo's got in mind for the Wii U 3D Mario.
Ahh, I must have been including the WiiU one, which, while it's (obviously) not released yet, it looks like it will be the next "proper" Mario game, which would put the count at 4 to 3.

But yeah, I really hope Nintendo has an ace up their sleeve when it comes to a 3D WiiU Mario, as I'm really looking for a game to sell me on the WiiU.

none as long as it has a good story or game play and innovation or all of the above though if it gets too the point to where the devs no longer are able to make a good story because they did everything they could with the universe and start twisting it and don't make any improvements or barely even try hell even call of duty could be more receiving if infinity ward/activision put more then one year into each game.

This. I f people still like it, even if I don't, why should that series be ended?

The thing is, there are plenty of older franchises that don't seem to be producing quality games of recent times. That, I would certainly agree with you.

However at this point in my life, I would never actually want a game series to end. If I don't like a game series, then I'm don't lose anything if that series continues to be produced.

What I would wish for however, would be that if some of the franchises that have survived until today tried to raise the quality of their games. I mean, it is a franchise, so unless the developers run on magic the games must have been good at some point in time.

A relatively decent example of this would be the Sonic franchise. It certainly had its fair share of bad games, but when I played Sonic Generations I genuinely had fun with it because it felt good. It seemed like they sort of figured out how to design for both 2D Sonic and his 3D counterpart. It was a blast, and I'm glad they got to make the game rather than simply ending the series before they got to that point.

The only game series that I used to jokingly want to end was the Halo franchise. Not, because I hate it or think that stale or what have you, I was just annoyed that they weren't being literal about the marketing slogan used in Halo 3 "Finish the fight". I figured that meant it was over. You save the world and that's it. Master chief can finally retire and pursue his passions cooking delicious meals as a Master Chef. APPARENTLY NOT. >.> I only joke of course.

Call of Duty and Pokemon.

CoD needs to cease to exist, whilst Pokemon could continue making games, just stop, STOP introducing new Pokemon. Vanilluxe, OMGWTF!
I have to agree that it would be better if they stopped introducing new Pokemon or try to introduce fewer, but well thought out Pokemon. The legendaries still look good, but when they run out of ideas and make one look like an ice cream cone I start suspecting they went out for ice cream when they were out of ideas.

OT: No franchise I would like to end, the reason some franchises get milked is because the games sell well, thus a lot of people like them. I have played Call of Duty a few times with my nephew, I can't say I like the game, but I deal with it by ignoring that they exist.

As a long-time fan of Mass Effect and Halo, I feel they should both halt and grow into aged stories.
