I've always been into gaming since I was a kid and lost many an afternoon to my NES or gameboy however, in the past few years I've fallen WAY behind in my gaming - I kind of lost interest in it for a while when my computer could no longer handle PC games and my good ol' Playstation 2 became dated. But in the past couple months my interest has come back. With avengeance. I'm a full time university student so I can't go out and buy every new game that strikes my fancy or really any new games at all since they cost upwards of $80 in Australia so I wanted to know some of your favourite games from the past couple years that you consider a must-have and so I can re-educate myself as it were. I also want to review these games - good or bad because I'd love to venture into freelance game reviewing to earn a few bucks.

Thanks for any and all game suggestions :)

P.S. I do prefer adventure/RPG games but hey, might as well try something new as well!
Oh, and PC only :)

Assuming you've updated your PC to modernish standards, I'd say that Elder Scrolls Oblivion would be up your street.

I never played it much, but it is pretty much THE fantasy RPG from a few years ago. Long, in depth plot etc.

Also theres the two Dragon Age games (with added sexual ambiguity) which similarly have been very popular in those fantasy circles. Again, not quite my cup of tea, but hopefully should be yours.

Slightly further away you have Fallout 3 and New Vegas. More shooters than they are RPGs, but they have good RPG elements (meaningful conversations, moral choices, character sheets etc), and again, were well received.

You can also look at both Mass Effect games. Again, they are more action than they are RPG, but the conversation system is really cool and they got a great universe. There's also Alpha Protocol which is along those lines but modern instead of sci-fi. AP is kinda stream lined, dumbed down RPG stuff, but I enjoyed it in a trashy way :p

That'll at least give you a good place to start looking from. All of the above got great reviews, and although obviously taste is very personal, they will all give you a decent amount of game for your money, plenty of replay value and such like, which I find important when I'm looking to spend money.

I'd suggest you look to Steam or a similar direct download service to get them from. That'll save you some cash right off the bat, and obviously you don't have to wait or shop around. Also they run plenty of sales or 'buy the whole series cheaper' kinda stuff which is always useful on budget.

Enjoy man!

Oh and welcome to the forums :D

I must say, Lost Alone gave some damn good advice. You legend.

As far as PC games I've been enjoying lately go...here's a rundown:

Bioshock 1...and maybe 2?
Haven't quite finished the first one, but the story and game world are delicious. Really fun to play...but I suppose it's more FPS than anything else. I guess.

Civilisation V!
Okay, so, people say it's dumbed down, which is true, but then it's not always a bad thing. Enjoyable and easy to pick up (I guess). You'll find time flying with this one. Sorta turn-based strategy.

Dawn of War!
These are old games, but my oh my, they are good. Maybe not so much SoulStorm, but Dark Crusade was a classic. Real time strategy:].

The Battle For Middle Earth 2
Yep, Lord of the Rings RTS. It's great. Get it.

Apparently The Witcher and number 2 are good...but I haven't played them:(.

ALSO, welcome to the Escapist you cheeky lad. Listen to me when I tell you to stay out of the basement.

Awesome, A fellow girl gamer! Anyways, I know you like RPGs, but I do have a game that may work for you. It's called Beyond Good and Evil and it's for the PC, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox. So you can get it for ethier your PC or PS2. It's an excellent game, focusing a great deal on story and while there are some zeldaesque elements to it, try not to focuss to hard on it and just get into the story. Beyond Good and Evil is more of an experience than anything else. Though, if you hate cameras in videogames you may not like it as much but its good to give it a shot. It's also fairly cheap so you will be able to get it a reasonable price.

Also PC wise try out Dragon Age, it is a lot of fun if you like the RPG style of things. Also there are games on Steam that are really good, Amensia Dark Descent may be a fun one for you to play. But check out some of the Steam independent games.

Or you could always get a SNES emulator and play Mother 2 or Mario RPG. But you have probably already played those.
