music games

you could be using your time and money to learn how to play a real guitar/drums or learn to sing

seriously, it's not completely out of your reach, unlike what Yahtzee said
That's such a worn-out argument against music games, I wish people would stop using it. Perhaps people don't want to learn how to play the real thing - ever think that they just want the experience? You know, the whole POINT of video games, giving you an escape from reality. To say "you could be using your time and money to learn a real instrument" instead of playing a music game makes about as much sense as saying you could be spending your time and money learning to shoot a real gun rather than playing an fps.

As for genres I dislike, that'd be fighting games. I have a severe problem with the lack of any story, and repetitive gameplay.

J-RPGs and I suppose most RPGs

I'd rather have 8-12 hours of genuine excitement, fun and engaging gameplay with a neat and compact story than 80-120 hours of meh, grinding and overly drawn out story. 10 times as long and per minute it is about a tenth as enjoyable may add up to just as good for many people but I just doesn't work that way for me.

But equally I dislike games where the single player is under 6 hours long... that is just taking the piss and extra modes like co-op and multiplayer should be mainly a supplement to, not a substitute of the single player. Though IW have always struggled to give the quantity to go with their quality, I remember COD2 and COD4 also ending fairly abruptly too.

I wish there were more games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess that take about 20 hours for the main quest and another 20 hours to max out to 100%. But that is more of an Action-RPG and I suppose you see a similar setup thing (yet still very distinct style) with Mass Effect or even Bioshock.

I don't hate any game types but I am tired of seeing and hearing about FPS war games. Also not the slightest bit interested in games that require a plastic instrument to play.

Guitar hero games, anything in that area I hate. I don't like playing it and I've had a group of friends over just egging me on while they hammer down on the clacking keys while playing songs I hate as well, the room shaking of course. I try to just be nice and let it go but it really drives me nuts.

There is not such a thing like HATE a type of game or a genre,it's just only what you prefer and enjoy most !!! I'm not really into the sports games like Pro Evolution but I like FIFA street and Championship Manager (beware very addictive game !!) and Racing games ,the most recent I played was Moto gp and Forza. J-Rpgs,Rpgs,RTS and Beat-em up games are liked most from retro gamers, who played these games when the only thing you saw were pixels, but back then we didn't think that this was a problem and neither now.Generally , I think , it's better to try something out before you condemned it,I really found games that I really enjoy which in first look I wouldn't get near them. :)

I'm the same, can't stand driving games mainly because I suck at them and even if I were good, I still wouldn't enjoy them.

I'm not a fan of FPS. I'm not good at them, don't have the twitches or aiming ability to well in them. Plus they are starting to see really over hyped and over done lately.

Sport Games like madden or however it's spelled, just pretty much for the same reason that I don't like seeing Football on TV.
I'd rather actually play it then see people play it for me.
