Well let me say this, I really enjoyed that sequence in CoD4, because as you say it felt like being a sniper, rather just carrying a rifle with a scope like you'd carry any other gun; but I think it's important to say that doing sniping well in campaign and doing it well in multiplayer are not the same thing. A different approach must be taken to keep gameplay balanced.
Very true. Hence my favorite sniping, besides that sequence in CoD4, is TF2. Sure, it isn't realistic to have your bullets become more powerful the longer you look down the scope, but it is sure pathetic and arbitrary.
Fixed.

I adore the one in Team Fortress 2. It makes it impossible to use un-scoped and it makes you think in new ways.

I still like Yahtzee's take on sniping: You're all Adventure Game players, but you only have one item and one option: Use Gun on Man.

I'm not too current with some modern games but I really liked the sniping in the first Hitman. It was incredibly inaccurate and you really had to be good to take someone down, if you missed you were pretty much screwed.

Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare has the best sniping that I have ever seen.

Halo is good.

Resistance is OK.

Gears is kind of annoying.

So far I think I like Killzone 2 the best.

A lot of video games have some form of sniping in them. And a lot of them have very unrealistic and simplistic sniping. But there are a few cases that stand out above the rest. Which game do you think has the best sniping?

Two prime examples:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has an excellent sniping sequence in it, which is actually realistic and intense at the same time. However, the rest of the ingame sniping is fairly unrealistic and standard.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Truly exceptional in my opinion. It simply feels really good. You see a bullet travelling realistically when you shoot and then the kickback, breath-holding, and bobbing are all done incredibly well.

Which games do you think have really well-done or really realistic sniping?
Battlefield Bad Compay - Online Only!

The sniping in Bad Company is awesome. The ghille suits are fantastic, I've had a group of two snipers and one special forces creep past me within feet and not notice I was there, now that's good sniping! Just a note, it wasn't a basic game, it was with experienced players.

Actually it's very easy to make kills unscoped. Your shot always goes to the exact centre of your screen.

CoD1 or 2, I can't remember which, used to have ridiculously unbalanced sniping. The accuracy was ridiculous in any position and when you fired you didn't zoom out so you could just headshot people like crazy without them even having a chance to react.

Then they changed it so that firing a shot forced you to exit out of zoom, reload, and then zoom back in plus they added a waiting period between when you hit the button and when the scope appeared fully so it wasn't instant. That was one of the better implementations of semi-realistic sniping in a game which had horrible (yet fun) sniping to start with.

halo 3 has really good multiplayer sniping...even if i personally isn't a fan of it!

and for the record, the sniping scene/level whatever in COD4 used VERY exaggerated deflection! even when taking into account the Coriolis effect, strong wind, the rifle inaccuracy and any movement of the rifle(as in side to side) at the time of firing.
I even managed (intentionally) to bend the trajectory so extremely that the bullet managed to curve around the corner of building the target flee behind -_- (and i mean by several meters not just a few cm)
it was like a scene from the wanted movie :p
the fact that the bullet travels completely straight until about halfway only adds to the ridiculousness of it all>.<

I thought the campaign sniping segment in CoD4 was awesome, but multiplayer is terrible on anything but Hardcore mode. What's the point of having a ghillie suit if you just pop up on the radar whenever you fire? The levels are way too small, as well.

I never played Battlefield 2, but I'm guessing the principles in that carried over to BF: Bad Company, so I'd have to go with that. It's a great feeling to hide in the shrubbery, lead on a target halfway across the map with the M95 and get them in the head. The ability to go an entire game as a sniper, without dying, is a great thing that is missing in so many games nowadays.

Sucks when jerks shoot a tracer on your face while you're down in the grass, though.
