I'd go with the original Metal Gear Solid, when you had to take down Sniper Wolf. Your hand shakes, you can't trail very fast...it's pretty realistic, imo.

Well let me say this, I really enjoyed that sequence in CoD4, because as you say it felt like being a sniper, rather just carrying a rifle with a scope like you'd carry any other gun; but I think it's important to say that doing sniping well in campaign and doing it well in multiplayer are not the same thing. A different approach must be taken to keep gameplay balanced.
Very true. Hence my favorite sniping, besides that sequence in CoD4, is TF2. Sure, it isn't realistic to have your bullets become more powerful the longer you look down the scope, but it is sure pathetic and arbitrary.
Fixed.
You don't like the whole "power" thing in TF2. Fine, your opinion. But please don't put words in my mouth.

I actually liked the sniping in FEAR2. Probably because of the sheer amount of carnage you could wreak with the rifle and slo-mo. Basically you could take out a platoon of enemies in 15 seconds

Usually I loathe the sniper rifle, because A- I can never seem to get a head shot, B- because I never seem to be able to stay in any decent sniping position for more than five seconds before I get snuck up on or counter-sniped, and C- because no one else seems to have these problems when it comes to using it against me.

But for some reason I really like the Longshot from the Gears of War series. Part of it's because I can nail the active reload and get another shot ready quickly, with greater damage, and with great reliability (even when the perfect zone shrinks after multiple successful reloads). Part of it's because I can actually get into cover quickly if anyone else starts shooting (just releasing the Left trigger when the bullets start to fly). And yes, part of it is that I just really like the red fountain that replaces my enemies' recently pinged head. But beyond all that, I just have fun using it, and can put up decent sniper sprees while in possession of one. This is a mystery to me, someone who has yet to get any respectable sniper kills or sniping combos in any other game.

Quality wise COD4 has the best sniping

But the award for artistic impression goes to headshots in Gears of War

Sniper Elite does a great job of creating real world sniping.

I adore the one in Team Fortress 2. It makes it impossible to use un-scoped and it makes you think in new ways.
Actually it's very easy to make kills unscoped. Your shot always goes to the exact centre of your screen.
I have never understood that in games why it is so hard to hip fire a sniper rifle. Personally its quite easy to hip fire a sniper, but thats just me.

Snipers in Tribes (the original). Few were actually any good at it, and those that were were FEARSOME in their skill.

The sniper issue has been present since the original Team Fortress. It's all a part of the balance.

Besides, who the hell cares about realism in THAT game?

Why are there so few people who played Sniper Elite? That game was so damn good, especially on co-op. The camera follows the bullet straight into their poor, unsuspecting face, what more could you want?

I like Far Cry 2, with the choice between a dart rifle (silent, but you must get the head shot first time) and the bigger sniper rifles (kill anywhere, but very noisy).

stalkers did it wonderfully. the rifles sounded like they should (powerful or silent depending on the rifle) and it actually took some skill to be able to pull off good shots for most of them. battlefield games do it well also. but for most satsifying sniping id have to say crysis mp. being well hidden in the bushes hundreds of yards away from any of the action perfectly hidden just waiting for someone to pop their heads out. most mp shooters just feel like the sniper rifles were an afterthought, a needless inclusion in a pure run and gun/action game. cod4s sniping in my opinion sucked since its basically the same as EVERY other shooter, just cheap and unsatisfying, but then again i hate the cod series and espically 4.

Has to be Longshot from gears. It has an excellent scope, it is challenging (only kills with headshots), immensely satisfying and it is versatile as TheBXRabbit said (Post 46).

HALO 3 all the way, its simplicity is great for those without the patience to try and hold it steady
