So I have recently bought an Xbox 360, and have been pleasantly surprised by just how much I'm enjoying the whole Gamer Profile thing. I like seeing how well/badly (mostly the latter) I am doing at a game compared to my friends, and also seeing what games they've been playing. I've never really been one for hi-score tables, but this looks like its about to change.

So my question is: why isnt there a simillar service for indie/freeware/shareware games? An open and common platform that could drive interest in other indie games and help build up a community. Have there been any attempts to do something like this?

One of the reasons I can see why this doesn't exist is because such a framework would reduce the independence of the indie developer.

One of the appeals of being an indie developer is that you aren't constrained by a certain framework you must stick to. It is your right as a developer to choose what you support. If it doesn't work well with your existing coded system, you don't have to shoehorn it in there to meet publisher requirements.

Also, to have a big and ranked leaderboard, you need to host it on a robust server. This costs money and I'm not sure who exactly would be paying for this service.
