It's a simplistic view, but not entirely wrong. I'd say rather that different sites/forums encourage this kind of mindset by being strongly for one genre and indifferent to or hostile to others.

This is the Escapist - a gaming site, but one glance at the forum would give you the impression that 'gamers' like RPGs (and whatever Yahtzee likes), hate FPSs and barely know what an MMO is. I'm sure other site are similiarly skewed.

And that impression iwll be reinforced a thousandfold if you're talking about in-game communities - try having a conversation about another MMO in WoW's global chat, or about WoW in any other game's global, and see how open minded those parts of the gaming community are. I'm sure the same can be said for other online multiplayer games as well.

Video games are like religions.

Gamers are divided into whichever genre and/or game style they prefer, with most happy to be a part of the greater collaborative, and only the extremist lunatics that would make war against those with differing opinions.

I find this thread to be highly simplistic and over-generalised, missing decades of differences and different groups. Also, it assumed we have to be one cohesive group. Not all film buffs like the same films. Some book lovers love James Joyce, some can't stand him. Saying "gamers are divided" is like saying "more than one person likes games".

Troll topic...and from your post you are probably one of the so-called 'multiplayer crowd' as you refer to anyone else as 'pretentious bastard pc/single player group'.

But just FYI, I like games from both of your over-generalised classifications.

Now go back under your bridge and stop making threads like this one...

this topic is confronting the fact that gamers are now divided. on one half, the multi player crowd loves COD/Battlefield, OMG SKYRIM SUKS!!!!!.

on the other side, the pretentious bastard pc/single player group who believes anything that is not skyrim sucks, or believes that pc games are instantly better, and hate on ps3/xbox games.

what do you guys/girls think?
Actually its more like a giant spectrum and only asshats harass others for liking something they don't. In that way those two groups people are actually more united. Personally I'm not a fan of COD, but I have no problem with people who love it. Likewise I have friends who like COD but don't happen to enjoy fantasy rpg but don't care that I do.

Most gamers fall into the category of: I don't care what you happen to enjoy

What do I think?

I find this thread highly insulting. Who's right is it to say that all "gamers" (God how I loathe the term) belong to either of those "groups?"

I'm impartial. I like both multiplayer and single player games. Problem, stereotypes?

Why do you loathe the term gamer?
I hate it too.

I play games but I wouldn't identify myself as a 'gamer'. There are a lot of feathers to my cap and I don't think gaming is the most important one.
As I see it there are two ways of approaching the term gamer.

1) It is a descriptive term, useful because playing video games is not something that is universal, unlike watching movies/TV, reading, listening to music, or breathing. Thus someone who owns a motorcycle is a biker, someone who enjoys swimming is a swimmer, and someone who plays video games is a gamer.

2) It is a term used to describe someone who not only occasionally plays video games but is passionate about them. Thus it is analogous to terms like cinephile and bookworm.

Why is the second group insulted and the first isn't? Guess which the OP associates himself with...

But no, there is not only 2 "groups" and many people play both Skyrim and CoD/Battlefield.

Meh, it's only important if you care about MW3 or BF3, there is always people who likes a game over another, not unusual and you are giving it too much importance.

Division? Just go and play the kind of game you like most and by that you are doing what the games were made of, to have fun.

Do that and you will become a true gamer, not just a rambling fanboy.

I know people who Prefer RPG's because they offer a slower pace and prefer to play in a more relaxed environment.
I know people who dislike games like Skyrim because they generally don't enjoy the fantasy setting.
I myself enjoy games like L4D and currently play an MMO because I enjoy multiplayer, i just never liked CoD or Battlefields setup, preferring such things as Serious Sam or the previously mentioned L4D. As while Battlefield and CoD are well built technically, i dislike the pacing.
I don't know that i have ever ACTUALLY met either of the groups of people you say gamers are.

And then there's douchebags like me, who play multiplayer almost exclusively (my time is sunk into League of Legends and some Pokemon Online), except for games I know for a fact will be (or are) great in some other way. Fallout, LoZ, Skyrim etc for brilliant atmosphere and exploration.

You're basing your opinions on a select few, much like the PC vs. console or hardcore vs. casual was just a small loud group of idiots, most of us don't care what others play.

I find the very notion quite insulting. I happen to like a variety of games. Yes I love skyrim, yes I also love Battlefield 3's multiplayer, yes I also love free running games like Assassin's creed, yes I also love the occasional racing game. About the only thing I dont play is sports games

I think if these poeple actually exist they need to stop being so snobbish and immature and let people play and enjoy the games that they enjoy

Bit of a sweeping statement. Granted, some people are like that, but it's an extreme minority. We're not all bad, bro!
