Then go for Indie titles, which often have more entertaining gameplay in them anyway.

Hence why I buy used games but OH NO I'M KILLING THE INDUSTRY.

Though it's better than not buying games at all, yes? I really can't justify spending $120 on a video game.
Wait... where do YOU live?!?

I can get about twenty-five GREAT games for that price...

I don't think they are that expensive when you look at cost per hour. They're actually pretty cheap that way.

10 hours for $60 is much cheaper than going to a movie or something else.

I don't get it. If game devs were getting on so well back in the day with low(ish) prices, why can't they now?
I'm actually pretty sure that game cartridges cost the same amount then as discs do now. Besides, the cost of development is much higher now. Requiring more people, better technology,and more marketing.

One big thing is the fact that there are HUGE numbers of employees for a game title. EA for instance has thousands of employees.

When it first started, it had ~ 30. On top of that, take into consideration that it's harder to produce games on three very different consoles and you can see where the money goes.

Games are infinitely more expensive than they should be.

Games are information, they can be distributed infinitely and should therefore have no price.

Are you buying those games that come with crazy add-ons like the $300 Steel Battalion with the insane looking controller.
Or you are buying only the special edition to which I say don't since they only come with gadgets.

As other people have likely said, bringing down the price of games is very unlikely due to the fact that games cost huge amounts of money. Everyone involved have to be paid and creating the game itself likely runs a company millions. It's stupid to think that they're just driving up prices because they feel like it. Think of it like this, would you rather pay $50 for a game with the average PS2/Wii quality to it, or $60 for a decent quality game. And before you say that there are worthless games for all systems, thanks for pointing out the obvious. That's why you read up about them or rent them before buying them.

Also, in the case of 'too expensive to pay new so buy used,' here's an idea; wait until the game to come down in price or save up. Yes, that sounds bad, but it's not like you'll die without the game. Used games are normally only $5 less anyways.

I agree that games are too expensive, though I still reckon down here in Australia we have it worse with the average being about $100 dollars a game.
Still I would hope that in the future games cost less but for now I have to make do with the fact that game purchases are a rare thing for me.

I only buy during steam's sale periods when they decide to go crazy with discounts. other than that, yes games are too expensive, I seem to remember times when a game was £30 :(

Totally agree with OP. If games started at 20 quid it would be much more affordable. (roughly $40 USD).
This is part of the reason I dislike consoles - not because of the platforms themselves, but because in the UK console games cost £20 more than PC games, each - often for a game that is also available on PC. The problem is that seeing this, PC games are slowly pushing price up..

£20 would be reasonable, price is definitely THE reason I don't buy more games, especially when some of what you buy is such unadulterated rubbish.

The RRP for most new releases here in Australia is $119, that is 98.77 American Dollars as of today (two weeks ago before the currency crash it'd be about $110). I do not pity American gamers. You guys have the cheapest games in the world by a significant margin, the rest of the world really needs to catch up before you guys get further price cuts >_>

According to my old Archie digests many Nes games were between 59.99 to 79.99.

Lets also not forget Action 52 for the nes. The damn thing cost around $150 if i remember correctly.

Games have always been expensive.

Compare if you will. I've been buying games since I was a kid. This is how I remember their pricing structure throughout the years.

Atari= $20-30
Nintendo= $40ish
Snes= $50-75
PSX= $10-55
PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast= $35-60
PS3/Xbox360/Wii= $45-75

Keep in mind I factored in rereleases (sony playstation classics with green label), rarity/availability, modules sold seperately such as 10 level Special Ops games and Special Editions which bump the price up about 10 bucks.

Yeah, games are expensive, but they are expensive to make.

That's why you don't see me play new titles that often. I just play <3 year old titles at a time.

Games in Australia range from 90-120+ Dollars. More for Consoles. Steam was our saving grace because even though we pay in US dollars they are still far cheaper. I say was because now Steam is being forced to raise their prices so EB games can compete.

/start rant This is kind of on topic and also off topic as well, but when ever overseas companies try to come to Australia and sells things for cheaper prices ie Games(Steam) or Groceries,etc(Costco) our leading distributors complain, force and even sue the overseas companies to raise their prices or to make them leave. The examples in brackets are recent cases. /end rant
