In my side of the world, people got killed because:

1. He wasn't good-looking enough
2. He doesn't know the lyrics to the Wondergirls song "Nobody"
3. He sang Frank Sinatra's My Way (kinda ironic since the very first line is "And now, the end is near). This last one is a recurring theme.

Granted alcohol was involved in all occasions, but the point still stands.

My mother would say it was bad parenting.

She would, however, acknowledge that there is SOME form of link between the games and the rape, as playing violent games hardly calms people down. The games themselves might have made him grouchy, but it is his parents, whether through general all-round sucky parenting or simply neglecting to tell the little crap to take a break like anyone else, who are at fault here

He intended to mug someone but being a sexual predator (who are opportunists) the minute he saw a pretty young girl he did something terrible to someone who he felt couldn't fight back.

Also note that it was described as a "brutal rape", that means the poor girl was seriously hurt.

To be fair, I don't give a damn about the girl. My only problem is you're calling him a coward for being sensible. Sensible about a crime, yes. But sensible nonetheless. Lets see you fight someone twice your size.

All I'm getting from this is you thinking you're a badass for being "logical". "Durr, look at me not being sensitive about a rape victim!" And he's still a coward. OK, before I start, I know we get eleventy seven of these threads a week, but I felt I had to share.

As some of you guys know, I'm from an island called Jersey [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Islands], home of cows, Bergerac, over 50's holidays and not much else. As you can guess from the description, this place tends to be pretty quiet. The police did a survey recently, they left a wallet on a bench with a uniformed copper in sight, to see who would actually turn the wallet in. They didn't count on no-one picking it up in 3 working days.

A SCHOOLBOY jailed for four yesterday for raping a teenage girl had stormed out of his house after spending hours playing war games on his computer.

After a row with his mother over the amount of time he was spending playing the game, the 14-year-old left home with the intention of mugging the first person he saw. He took a kitchen knife and home-made balaclava with him.

Yesterday, the boy, who cannot be named because of his age, was jailed for four years by the Royal Court.

Now, the bit that annoyed me? With it being a small island, that's the only local newspaper that gets printed, and there are a hell of a lot of people who take it at it's word. The article centers (for me) on the fact that a mother can't control her 14 year old kid.

I mean out of the 91,626 (July 2009 estimation) people who have houses over here, there's probably about 2,000 gamers, maybe a couple more on this particular bit of rock. And we're all psychos, obviously.

To actually make this a discussion thread and not a "my dad's pissed me off because he's always banging on about games making people violent and now this has given him what he thinks is solid proof" thread, any of you lot had something similar happen near where you live?

I have only ever played one game where virtual rape was depicted (F.E.A.R. 2). This is bullshit. The media just love to villify our favourite past time don't they? I'm convinced the governments of the world have it in for us, just because we kick their arses online when they casually log into MW2 or TF2.

This is the second time I've heard of the kid getting only 4 years. Since when did something as awful as rape have the sentence reduced to what could be described as a slap on the wrist in comparison?
