In my side of the world, people got killed because:

1. He wasn't good-looking enough
2. He doesn't know the lyrics to the Wondergirls song "Nobody"
3. He sang Frank Sinatra's My Way (kinda ironic since the very first line is "And now, the end is near). This last one is a recurring theme.

Granted alcohol was involved in all occasions, but the point still stands.

Ok
1. I thought you were talking about New Jersey.
2. I would think that a 19 year old female could handle herself against a 14 year old boy.
3. I doubt videogames made him want to rape someone. Maybe he was angry at his mom and he was a woman-hater at heart, but I doubt it was videogames.

War Games...Rape? Wheres the connection?
Gotta love how "his intention to mug the first person he saw" was insantly forgotten when he saw the "Heavily-built man"!

My mother would say it was bad parenting.

She would, however, acknowledge that there is SOME form of link between the games and the rape, as playing violent games hardly calms people down. The games themselves might have made him grouchy, but it is his parents, whether through general all-round sucky parenting or simply neglecting to tell the little crap to take a break like anyone else, who are at fault here

I agree with her, the videogames are not the catalyst, but certainly augmented the situation

well he had a knife, so i dunno...i probably couldn't, even if the offender was just 14...
i think he got away pretty good with four years, that's almost a bargain. if someone did that to me my boyfriend would snap that person in half^^

aaand of course it's the evil videogames fault, what else..

What a fucking coward.
If you were intending to mug or rape, i'm sure you would not got for the guy who is twice as big as you.

Anyway, games had nothing to do with this. Stupid paper.
If the police got the info out of him that his sole intention was to mug someone and he had second thoughts on it when someone who could overpower him came along, he's a fucking coward.

He intended to mug someone but being a sexual predator (who are opportunists) the minute he saw a pretty young girl he did something terrible to someone who he felt couldn't fight back.

Also note that it was described as a "brutal rape", that means the poor girl was seriously hurt.
To be fair, I don't give a damn about the girl. My only problem is you're calling him a coward for being sensible. Sensible about a crime, yes. But sensible nonetheless. Lets see you fight someone twice your size.
All I'm getting from this is you thinking you're a badass for being "logical". "Durr, look at me not being sensitive about a rape victim!" And he's still a coward. He went out there in a rage, all tough and full of adrenaline, and then pissed his pants when he couldn't get what he wanted at first. His ego bruised, he went after something weaker. Coward.

I wish he went for the heavily-built man, he would get his ass kicked , which he would've deserved, that stupid f***ing cowardly prick. Ya, nothing like that happens around here, sorta large town in Massachusetts. Though 2 weeks ago their was a murder suicide at a small motel, but no one (as far as I now) blamed in on games.

OK, before I start, I know we get eleventy seven of these threads a week, but I felt I had to share.

As some of you guys know, I'm from an island called Jersey [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Islands], home of cows, Bergerac, over 50's holidays and not much else. As you can guess from the description, this place tends to be pretty quiet. The police did a survey recently, they left a wallet on a bench with a uniformed copper in sight, to see who would actually turn the wallet in. They didn't count on no-one picking it up in 3 working days.

But anyway, that's not what I made the thread about. I made the thread about this:
Teenage rapist "played war games for hours"

[sub]The area at Westmount where the attack took place[/sub]

A SCHOOLBOY jailed for four yesterday for raping a teenage girl had stormed out of his house after spending hours playing war games on his computer.

After a row with his mother over the amount of time he was spending playing the game, the 14-year-old left home with the intention of mugging the first person he saw. He took a kitchen knife and home-made balaclava with him.

After first ignoring a heavily-built man, he turned his attention to a 19-year-old who was making her way home from town late on 13 October. After following her to the Westmount area, he forced her into a field at knifepoint before subjecting her to brutal rape.

Yesterday, the boy, who cannot be named because of his age, was jailed for four years by the Royal Court.

Now, the bit that annoyed me? With it being a small island, that's the only local newspaper that gets printed, and there are a hell of a lot of people who take it at it's word. The article centers (for me) on the fact that a mother can't control her 14 year old kid.

I mean out of the 91,626 (July 2009 estimation) people who have houses over here, there's probably about 2,000 gamers, maybe a couple more on this particular bit of rock. And we're all psychos, obviously.

To actually make this a discussion thread and not a "my dad's pissed me off because he's always banging on about games making people violent and now this has given him what he thinks is solid proof" thread, any of you lot had something similar happen near where you live?

[sub] I'd also like to point out, that as a gamer who is annoyed at one of his parents, I am not going to resort to raping someone. Promise.[/sub]
I have only ever played one game where virtual rape was depicted (F.E.A.R. 2). This is bullshit. The media just love to villify our favourite past time don't they? I'm convinced the governments of the world have it in for us, just because we kick their arses online when they casually log into MW2 or TF2.

It does seem short he threatened, raped and escaped scene of crime. Thing is he is only 14 years old so he probably got tried as a minor

Anyway, with all that gone. Of course I don't care about the victim, my original point had nothing to do with her. That was my way of saying "That wasn't my point".

Of course, if you say he's a coward, then if you ever go out to try and stab someone, go and stab a guy twice your size for me. Make sure that after you're done you leave a note with my username on too yeah?

Stop letting your damn bias get through your arguments people! Yes, a girl was raped, yes, he avoided a big guy. Cowardice or being careful?

What's up with people getting random murderous impulses lately? It's like a trend now-you play, you get up, you go outside and stab someone(or in other cases stab the person next to you).

It's stupid people who blame games for everything,
you know now that I think about it before video games were out people were blaming television and movies, before that books, and before that plays. (yes really)
People always need something to scapegoat and they WILL scapegoat the easiest thing available to them and at that moment it's video games.

He took a kitchen knife and home-made balaclava with him....I have to ask what was the balaclava just doing in his house? you dont need one of those unless you had planned on doing somethign to get your ass in jail or if you go sking which im sure you can in new jersy...I also think you cant blame a war game for rape....If it had sexual content maybe but im sure bloody dead men doesnt turn on many people

This is the second time I've heard of the kid getting only 4 years. Since when did something as awful as rape have the sentence reduced to what could be described as a slap on the wrist in comparison?
