To actually make this a discussion thread and not a "my dad's pissed me off because he's always banging on about games making people violent and now this has given him what he thinks is solid proof" thread, any of you lot had something similar happen near where you live?
You may have heard of Stefan Pakeerah [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/3934277.stm] and Manhunt.

You may also have heard of Keith Vaz.

But lets not dwell on unpleasantries. Let's tear apart that little piece of journalism.

A SCHOOLBOY(relevancy?) jailed for four (four what?) yesterday for raping a teenage girl had stormed out of his house (supposition [unsupported]) after spending hours (nonspecific) playing war games (supposition [unsupported]) on his computer(supposition [unsupported]).

After a row with his mother over the amount of time he was spending playing the game (Game now, not games? This row obviously didn't amount to anything other than that?), the 14-year-old left (That's a schoolboy now?) home with the intention (supposition [unsupported]) of mugging the first person he saw. He took a kitchen knife (supposition [unsupported] unless you're telling me you can be sure it was his knife)and home-made(Because that makes all the difference) balaclava with him.(supposition [unsupported])

After first ignoring a heavily-built man,(supposition [unsupported]) he turned his attention (supposition [unsupported])to a 19-year-old who was making her way home from town late on 13 October.(Details are irrelevant here, as well as "late"?) After following her to the Westmount area, he forced her into a field at knifepoint before subjecting her to brutal rape.(Because there's such a thing as non-brutal rape)

(We're casually ignoring the idea that a pre-meditated rape removes the idea of anger, but hey...)

Yesterday, the boy, who cannot be named because of his age, was jailed for four years by the Royal Court.
Wonderful piece of journalism. Bergerac would be proud.

Most telling point? There's no name attached to it.
And people weep for the death of print media?

My only worry is where we will find another source of such cheap kindling, because that's all most local papers are good for!

Is self-defense legal in Jersey?
Self defense, yes. Carrying a (potentially) lethal weapon with the intent of using it in self defense, no (aka no concealed carry firearms etc.)

Beans? In my forum?

Well, I think I went to school with this guy, if its the guy I remember then he had just started Hautlieu. Shame he did this because 2/3's of Jersey adults read the JEP everyday, and now lots of people are going to take the paper's opinion as the truth. But still....at least we have nice beaches here in Jersey.

Yo, I'm from Jersey, but I don't think the island is relevant in this. Games are an easy thing to blame. They're visceral and involving, but I don't believe that alone would drive you to rape. Thats my two cents
Woodsey said:
Also, there must be more than 2000 gamers surely?
As you can probably guess from my reaction to finding TWO islanders on here (not counting Angelic_Dragon, he left a while back), I'd guess 2k is probably about fair. Course, by "gamers" I mean gamers, not every man woman and child who once played space invaders on a pub table.

You don't care about a girl you don't know being raped, but you care about a rapist you don't know being libelled. Yes I see the logic there.
Oh god thank you, you put my overly long words into something short and readable, and something I hadn't thought of as well!.
You're welcome. It took me a while, it's difficult to articulate properly but I knew what you meant ;)

Man, my mom told me I had to stop playing Counterstrike Source to go take out the trash. I was so mad, I went out and raped the neighbor's 16 year old daughter.

My train of thought makes sense, right?

[/sarcasm]

But really, they can't blame this on games no matter how they try. That kid obviously has some sort of mental deficiency, because really? That train of thought makes no fucking sense.

Firstly, the boy was 15, but if they're gonna blame the crime on video games, they may as well get everything else wrong.

The JEP is a crap Newspaper. So many mistakes and just making up A LOT of untrue crap. They also filter out information so there's only the bits of info they want to be in there. I know this for a fact, as I know people who were involved in news stories who have seen the information turn out altered.

I live there. I went to the same school as the boy. Everybody knows who it is. I really didn't like him. He was pretty crap in school, as well. He was getting bad grades.

Hullo, I'm just gonna put on my "Psychology Major" hat now.

I see a lot of things asking, "What does a war game have to do with rape?" and it's mostly the testosterone. Moreso in men than in women, testosterone will spike when (for the sake of lay-men's terms) doing something manly and energetic, including fighting with your brother, taking hormones or playing violent video games. So, chalk his vigor and temper up to the war games.

However, blame the mom's terrible parenting style too. If a man doesn't have a strong maternal figure in his life to have an Oedipal complex over (I'm being totally serious there), he usually turns to the media as a kid to figure out what women are supposed to be like. If he's playing war games, I'd say he's used to ladies with big boobs and little to no brain playing utterly submissive roles. So, if that's how he views women, then he probably doesn't respect them enough to NOT rape them. If his mom had strapped on a pair maybe a grand total of once and smacked the kid for getting uppity (not advocating child abuse. Advocating discipline. Huge difference.) then this likely would not have happened.

This bothers me because people see no difference in people playing violent games because they are violent people and becoming violent people because of violent games. It's like how getting a new TV can get you to start watching lots of movies, but there are people who only bought the TV because they already watched a lot of movies.

I play a lot of violent video games (though admittedly, I pretty rarely play shooters) and I'm no more violent than I was when I only played stuff like Sonic the Hedgehog.

And yes, video game can teach kids to do bad things, but that doesn't mean they'll do it. I can shoot a gun - but I don't because I have no need for a gun. Heck, sometimes games teach you useful things, too.

And so the paranoia has begun. Ok everyone take a deep breath. Now read the article again. It doesn't blame video games. It is stating simple facts.
Fact: He was playing "war" games
Fact: He had a fight with his mom over his gaming
Fact: he stormed out of the house after the fight.

Nowhere does trhe article say "because of gaming he did this" or games had this type of influence. Would you guys only have been happy if the article had read boy rapes girl in Jersey. Is that really so much better than boy has arguement with mom over games. Later rapes girl. Draw your own conclusion.

Funny how when we are here we are gamers. We stand up and we scream to the heavens "I am gamer". But out there in the real world we don't want people to know. If they did find out they might make an article about a gamer who did something bad. If we want to associate it with our identity then we gotta face the good with the bad. And try to tell the difference. not every article about games puts gamers in a bad light.

Or maybe, just maybe the kid is a twat.

Why do people always resort to blaming the parents/video games/ cutlery they use

This 14 year old is a twat.

You could, but you don't need to. I had trouble figuring out how to word what I wanted to say too.

It doesn't say outright that games are to blame, but its implied, what is every one that reads it going to jump too
