Simply, the songs that are good on their own even if you dont know about the game and manages to still sound awesome after you play the game and learn the story.

Ghost and Goblins for the Sega Genesis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk7qTNsvI44

IJI for the PC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnL3e7FAMF8

Try to link videos that ONLY play the music to avoid spoilers.

The use of Space Oddity at the end of Alan Wake. Was ridiculously fitting and of course is a great song on it's own. The music in that game was pretty much quality all round though.

(The mods might not like people just linking videos btw. Pretty sure it's against the rules.)

well mine personally is mass effect, the first one is a longggggg song, but once you get into the decent meat of the song, it gets pretty good i think and really fits the game well:

A good, almost germanic chant. Very atmospheric.

And then there is this.
I just love this song.

Then again I like anime and Japanese music, so I'm not sure if people with 'normal' taste would like it.

My choice would be The Best Is Yet To Come from the end of Metal Gear Solid. A hauntingly beautiful piece of music.

'Time Only Knows' at the end of the first Prince of Persia! It was awesome! Smooth, but still with the semi-heavy guitars! It takes pride on my iPod!

So much Metal Gear here but no Heaven's Divide? For shame.

Damn, you beat me to it!

Aside from that, I'm going to say the credits to Sonic Generations, perhaps it's not so good out of context, but when you realise it's a culmination and celebration of the past 20 years, it's really quite poignant, especially with the 'Happy Birthday Sonic!' at the end.

Somebody already said it, but Bastion's Setting Sail, Coming Home is just something I can listen to endlessly. Hell, any piece from Bastion can make most AAA studios blush in shame and defeat, but particularly that ending. Always makes me fell a bit bitter, the lyrics, but I still listen to it. It's a really beautiful piece, even if you haven't played the game. If you have, it has that much more meaning to it, both for the lyrics and the combination of two previous themes, but even without that it's a startlingly good song. I actually heard it performed live in studio just a few days ago (sadly, on a video, not in person), and that somehow made it even more incredible.

Kid just listens for a while.

I'd also like to mention the worst one: Dragon Age: Origins.
30 Seconds To Mars? Fuck your shitty taste.

I have been beaten to all three games that I came here to mention: Mass Effect, Bastion, and Red Dead Redemption. In fact, I haven't even played RDR, but I love Dead Man's Gun anyway.

This thread got me wondering: is it possible for a song to only be beautiful outside of context? As in, it just doesn't work with the game it's matched to but is great when the listener can imagine their own context?

Seeing as somebody already stole "THe best is yet to come"....hmm, i guess i'll have to go with Calling to the night from Portable ops. Admit it, this song is just something special, even if you havn't played Metal Gear Solid.
