Just got a Macbook Pro for christmas and never really been a computer gamer - besides playing Age of Empire II when i was a lot younger - although would like to start. Mainly looking for good RPG's available to the Mac, although would be interested in any particularly good ones you could recommend. Any help you could offer would be great.

Games and Mac... two words that frequently don't go together.

Well if its RPGs you're after, I'd say Dragon Age Origins which I think came out for Mac as well. Also pretty sure The Sims is on Mac. And Diablo 2 if you don't mind a ten year old game.

Get Steam, and you can buy/play a huge library of games. Or subscribe to World of Warcraft and be done.

Dunno if it's up your street, but all the Football Manager games work on Mac, and that'd sort me for like a year.

Or either Civ IV/V (both are good, I think IV has more mileage now but I suspect V will keep getting better).

Steam is your best bet. My roommate is a pretty serious mac user, and he swears by it.
Never buy a game at a mac store... they'll charge you twice what the damn thing is worth.
...If you get really tired of a lack of gaming availability... well, my roommate's macbook pro has three bootable OSes on it: OS X, Kubuntu, and Windows 7 (Ultimate, 32-bit). Apparently that's not too difficult to set up. I'll ask him how he does it if you want.

If you want to invest in a super-cheap game, minecraft works on the mac...

My school has a few mac computers... never found them of much use other than the fact that the school has no clue how to block content on them, youtube videos and online comic books ahoy!

Yeah, any self-respecting Mac user has a Windows partition to play all their existing games on :p Boot Camp is the software to install other OS, comes included with your Mac and is an absolute doddle to use.

Funnily enough, I'm about to install Ubuntu on it as well, I've been a nerd for many years now and that I've never used GNU/Linux (lol I can't seem to just call it Linux since I got told off by Richard Stallman over email for calling his work 'open source') is frankly shocking.

I struggle with the same thing: I've largely given up PC gaming for the sake of having a vastly superior OS. Kind of sucks, but there are ways.

For one, there are tons of great freeware games out there for Mac if you just Google for it. It's mostly just casual stuff, but you stumble upon a gem now and again. For instance, look for Battle for Wesnoth. Great little turn-based strategy game, completely free.

Second, get Steam. You can't go wrong with Steam. That's where you'll get a lot of awesome games for great prices, like Plants vs. Zombies, Left 4 Dead, Braid, Half-Life 2, Portal...

Third, the Humble Indie Bundles have been offered for Mac. They are not going right now, but if you take a look at the games that they have featured so far, any of those are buyable on Mac.

Fourth, Blizzard. All their games, from World of Warcraft to Starcraft, have been on Mac.

Fifth, look around and experiment. Go to Renpy's website and see if you can find any good visual novels. Google "games for Mac" and see what you can find. There is a lot of great indie stuff out there, even such sleeper hits as Death by Sleep. Just look around and don't be afraid to experiment. Your computer is nearly impervious to viruses (not completely, but almost), so don't hesitate to download stuff and see how it is.

Oh, and also, Armegatron. It's the best rendition of the classic Tron lightcycle game there is, and it's available on Mac. Go.

You could also consider OnLive. The computer client is free, and available on OSX. Worth checking out, at least.

EDIT: And obviously, you can Bootcamp it. Partition your hard drive and install Windows so you can just shut down and restart in one OS or the other. That's the easiest way, but you'll still want most games to be on your Mac side if at all possible. Shutting down just to play a game is kind of annoying.
