i'd suggest a game called Recettear. it's fun and insanely adorable. It's a jrpg stile game were you play as an item shop owner.
you can get it on steam
Hell yes!

Robot Unicorn Attack. You'll open your eyes, come into the open, and live in harmony.

Also, if you can find someone who will lend you a PS3, play Flower. You will find a new appreciation for everything in existence.

Persona 3

Because it teaches us that shooting yourself in the head isn't dangerous.

I think it's physically impossible to think about suicide while playing Little Big Planet 2

Anything thats lets you kill stuff in a satisfying manner. It is what I have found that works for me. The darker the game the better. Animal Crossing made me more depressed. Not only do you get hosed by that effin racoon but then are forced to deal with all those shiny happy animals.

Right now I am using Dead Space 2 to help get over a bit of depression. I mean my life may suck right now but at least I am not some poor fucker who just woke up in a straight jacket on a spaceship full of aliens who want to eat me again.
Yes you are, it's just that there is a REASON you're in that straight jacket.

You're so crazy that you think everything is normal, meanwhile necromorphs are fucking EVERYWHERE!

This. I have a mild form of depression and this always helps me. It's easy, fun, addictive, and gives you a sense of accomplishment without any "real" rewards.

Dude it's Isaac Clarke. The one and only necromorph killing machine. Being on another ship full of them is just another day in the life. I mean it is the equivalent of me (being a Canuck) waking up and seeing snow out my window. Sure if I was say Hawian it might be something special.

Mazes and Monsters. Apparently it's a far out game!

But seriously? Persona 3. I shouldn't have to explain why.

Audiosurf while playing fun songs.

But what I think would help most is social interaction. So I suggest playing Lord of the Rings Online and roleplaying on the Landroval server.

Actually there was a game built around theme of battling depression and suicidal thoughts, it's quite notable amongst the "Games are art" crowd and it can be played for free right here:

http://www.ludomancy.com/games/today.php

it's called "Today I die", check it out.
Thanks for that. I have never heard of it, and when I started, I thought it would be bad. But it was actually pretty creative.

As weird as it may sound: Silent Hill.
it doesn't sound weird at all; i'd recommend F.E.A.R., or limbo; something spooky that will remind them that it's better to live than to die, something where they can realise that they do not wish to be dead, where the virtual dread outweighs their RL misery

(then again, i don't think that video games as monotherapy are sufficient treatment, and maybe they should get that at a psychiatry of their trust, but i take it this thread was meant that serious... yes?)

Well you can replace unicorn with any persona name (like Satan or Lucifer if you're feeling depressed) but I always found him screaming unicorn while he shoots himself in the head a tad funny.
